IT IS THEIR WORK! respect it. alisa - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: Click Here ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Oct 2002 08:28:30 -0400 From: "Stacy" Subject: [EDA] downloaded music i think a major problem with jewel's case is that because atlantic did such a poor job with her singles that people who like just the one song (standing still) alot of them just wanted that song and figured the rest of cd must suck because you never hear any other song on the radio. we know this isn't true becasue we bought the cd but there's alot of them out there that feel this way. we do it too with other artist we don't know that much about but like that one song they overplay on the radio. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Oct 2002 16:39:56 +0100 From: "Gary Stanley" Subject: [EDA] Downloading Music - The Last Word ? This seems to be a hot topic on the list so I thought I'd throw in my two cent's worth (or should that be pennies seeing as I'm from th UK?) As Alisa said, downloading ENTIRE cd's really should be stamped out somehow as it is stealing from the artists themselves, and don't even get me started on people who say "I'm only one person, so it's not going to hurt." What the main argument comes down to I think is the file sharing programs that are out there like Kazaa & WinMX and the way in which they should be policed. Don't get me wrong, I own both and am very glad I do. Being a long time member of this list, over the years you guys have recommended other artists (Patty Griffin, Dar Williams, Jess Klein, etc, etc.) which in most cases, being from the UK I had never heard of before. Now as much as I respect you guys I'm not just going to go out and spend my hard earned money on a CD just because somebody said "listen to them they are excellent....". The radio stations over here play a limited selection of stuff, which I have to say is mostly european pop that's just rubbish. This is where the aforementioned file sharing programs come into their own. If someone recommends someone to me I do a quick search in say Kazaa for the artist and maybe download two or three songs to see if they are any good. If they aren't, there's no harm done as it didn't cost me much to find that out. If on the other hand they stand out, chances are I'm going to go and buy their CD - I think a lot of artists are now working this out and that's why you tend to find a couple of MP3's for download on their websites nowadays....................... .......... The internet is killing the music industry whatever anyone tells you, but with a bit of cooperation the two would make excellent friends. Got a lot of great Jewel files then. But I've bought every single Jewel album that has come out, and have bought them as gifts for other people as well. I've also bought her videos (ie. A LIFE UNCOMMON) and multiple concert tickets to her shows. I've also done a lot to spread the word about how much I like her. At open mikes I've sung some of her songs and people have come up to me and said, "You made me like JEwel the way you sang that song (ie. they thought she was annoying before that!) I've sung songs like SUMMER HOME IN YOUR ARMS, etc." So, in terms of downloading, in my case it's never taken away from the artist but has only helped them and has gotten me access to songs I wouldn't have been able to hear otherwise which made me even more enthusiastic about the artist. So, in my situation, downloading music has never taken away from sales. In fact, when I downloaded a song I liked off Napster when it was around, I often bought music by that artist afterwards. I guess it depends... _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 06 Oct 2002 12:41:43 -0400 From: "jake skyles" Subject: Re: [EDA] RE: Jewels take on downloading music PLZ Jewel get Real!! Maybee you should re-read what Jewel said, "which makes my life harder--FOR NOTHING ELSE other than the fact my label needs to make money off me or else they don't promote me." Jewel has a bonified club hit with this song. I'm seriously hoping Atlantic takes note and releases the album version or some version to pop radio. It could be just what Jewel needs.
