I haven't been here in like...I dunno...100 yrs or something? Ok, maybe not that long, but it's been a very long time & I'm glad to be back! Well IMO, downloading music on places like WinMX, LimeWire, & Kazaa SHOULD be free! There's nothing illegal about it 'cause there's no money exchanged. The way I figure it, the music industry is just plain greedy. They think they deserve money from us downloading music, so they claim it's illegal. What's worse is that now they're going after US, the users! They're actually trying to sue us! I don't know about you, but I think this has gone way too far. What's the matter with those people, didn't their mothers teach them to share & share alike? Downloading music is no different than copying a CD or VHS & giving it to a friend. It's also a good example of the saying "try before you buy". I prefer to hear the music before I spend $18-20(which is rediculous) on a CD, & then find out I like only 1 or 2 songs on it. I don't have that kind of money anyway. - -- Join my Dark Angel forums! http://forums.delphiforums.com/dafanclub http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dafanclub ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Oct 2002 09:25:49 EDT From: W1GGY2@aol.com Subject: [EDA] NJC: Re: downloading music For a good chuckle on this subject, check out The Onion's article about the RIAA supposedly suing the radio industry (keep in mind The Onion is a SATIRICAL newspaper; it's articles are not real. However, they do a pretty good job of putting the real news in perspective!) The article can be found at http://www.theonion.com/onion3836/riaa_sues_radio_stations.html Here's an excerpt: The Recording Industry Association of America filed a $7.1 billion lawsuit against the nation's radio stations Monday, accusing them of freely distributing copyrighted music. "It's criminal," RIAA president Hilary Rosen said. "Anyone at any time can simply turn on a radio and hear a copyrighted song. Making matters worse, these radio stations often play the best, catchiest song off the album over and over until people get sick of it. Where is the incentive for people to go out and buy the album?" According to Rosen, the radio stations acquire copies of RIAA artists' CDs and then broadcast them using a special transmitter, making it possible for anyone with a compatible radio-wave receiver to listen to the songs. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Oct 2002 15:07:41 -0400 (EDT) From: "kevin maguire" Subject: [EDA] RE: Jewels take on downloading music PLZ Jewel get Real!! >>>Ok 1st of all when Eminem's last album came out (or was it the one before, dont really follow him...) it was downloaded like 10 million times, but he STILL became the TOP selling rap artist. And broke all kinds of records. (sorry this is kinda long....but worth it) >>>Now to Jewel's Illegal Downloading Dilemma "I shouldn't say this, but I think it's silly to spend money on an ad campaign because kids are going to do what's convenient, and it's the wave of the future. And it's great for kids to be educated and know exactly what they're doing and, it is, in my eyes, stealing, but I download music." >>>>So Jewel its STEALING but YOU DO IT TOO!!..... You cant play both sides.(Hypocritical?)..GET REAL JEWEL!Jewel also said of downloading music, "It's really convenient...." Jewel was also quick to point out that her music is also very much a part of the roughly 2.6 billion files that are illegally downloaded every month. "I have the dubious distinction of being one of the most downloaded artists. I have about 4.5 million records that have been downloaded, so it's 4.5 million records I wasn't able to sell, which makes my life harder--for nothing else other than the fact my label needs to make money off me or else they don't promote me. So it's hard for me to make records and keep making the kind of records I want unless I'm selling records, but I think downloading is a fact of life and I think people need to figure out other ways to monetize their image and their success," she said. >>>OK to this i say.... thats 4.5 Million records that would probable never have been bought ANYWAYS! And come on! PLEASE makes life harder for you! GET REAL!! Maybe you just have a CRAPPY Record DEAL! You Charge $50,000 at least per show to play, or 85% of the gross which ever is greater. You write and sell books. WOW i wish i hard 1/100th of your HARDER life.....Travel around the world. And just have to deal with the public/media at times, but also can afford to take getaways to fix your self anytime you want. >>>Again all i need to say is Eminem! Yeah its hard for him to be the TOP DOG, after his album was downloaded so much... Also i have downloaded jewel off the web, but i also have all the CD's. Just sometimes its in the car, or at work, and i want to hear a song..... There's no doubt that wholesale music theft is having an impact on the bottom line of the music industry. "It's a huge impact. A really, really, big impact," said Jewel. "In the long run it hurts you if you're trying to make money selling records. I haven't been able to make money selling records. I've had to tour more, which means I haven't been able to do another record." >>>Theres TONS of artist that get exposer from being downloaded, which they might not get. Artist just need to make better albums! not with just 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 good songs, and some FILLERS..... but get your moneys worth. Plus the extras are cool. Like on your last CD, with the Video, and wall paper and stuff. Thats cool. I can get a CD pressed for like 2.50 to 3 bucks. So Atlantis probable spends a buck or 2. Then advertisment. And all that. Then sell it for 15.99/16/17/18.99 or what ever. Thats the problem there!! >>>I aways buy CDs from self produced artist that i see. The Cash is going straight to them. Anyways..... Please JEWEL and all you artist out there....GET REAL....oh tuff life..... come on! We Make you, we can break you....well the Record Indy, breaks US with their CD prices!!! Once last thing! Give something back! Be down with the Fans.... hang out afterwards, sign autographs...BE LIKE STEVE POLTZ!!!!! Awesome GUY! And i have a friend that just interviewed Jewel on the Radio, he was saying that she was acting like a B*tch for a while in the Past, so she didnt get that many Radio Interviews till just this last year or so......
