Subject: [EDA] NJC: Expensive Music DVD is a relatively new format and the prices have already come down, while CDs have been around for about twenty years and continue to stay at the same price point or get more expensive. In fact, a certain popular online retailer recently raised their prices on CDs significantly and are now charging OVER RETAIL for many titles. This is exactly opposite of the way technology usually advances. My grandfather paid $2,000 dollars for a VCR in the seventies; now you can buy one that's ten times better for $50. One tip for everyone, though: if you buy music online, don't shop at the retailers that are charging $18 for a CD. Look around some. There are at least a couple major retailers that charge around $10 for the exact same titles and have even bigger selections. Well, then screw them - I am > not buying Nelly's CD just to get Hot in Herre ... or any other example you > > can think of. Yeah, I never really got why some of these artists are so against it or make such a big deal out of it. I mean, they're all rich and are making money regardless. I mean, unless it's the principal of the whole thing and they feel it's going to ruin their careers. I think that sharing programs could be potentially harmful to the music industry and it is part of the reason singles are no longer sold. Because people don't buy them when they can download them. But I think these celebrities should invest their time and their money in bigger issues because I doubt people are really going to stop downloading music because they tell us to. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Oct 2002 23:13:14 EDT From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Downloading Music Here's my take on it: Personally, I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with downloading and trading unreleased music. You're not profitting off the artist, and it's not like these songs are available for sale anyway... so you're not directly taking money away from the artist. However, downloading entire albums and burning them instead of buying them is a bit of a worry to me. Downloading a couple of songs just to see if you like an album is totally cool... in fact more albums are probably sold because of that than they were before because people can get a taste for the music before they buy. And I also understand the theory that CD's cost way too much, and that record labels are greedy... but not buying an artist's CD and downloading it instead is punishing the artist not the record label, especially newer artists who are trying to get their feet on the ground and, as Jewel says, if they don't sell millions of CD's probably won't remain on their record label much longer. That pressure is hard enough in the regular market, but when you have to worry about people downloading your CD as well... that's really difficult. The number of people that I know who downloaded and burned Pete Yorn's CD is ridiculous. That poor guy is TRYING to get it together in this industry... and personally I bought his CD cause I want to support him and I want him to remain on his label and release more music. But that won't happen if everyone just decides to burn his CD. So there you go. Steve ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Oct 2002 23:59:35 EDT From: Getmamayo@aol.com Subject: [EDA] njc: downloading music Offcourse it's stealing, but the marketplace and consumers have spoken, and the technology is so appealing and wide-ranging, that no one is going to make it go away, no matter how hard they advertise. Just like everything else, the record companies have to adapt, or they will become dinosaurs. And there are possibilities that could please everybody, there's already p2p programs owned by major record companies that can keep track of which songs you download, and pay royalties to artists. Until it gets solved though, I'll keep downloading my music, thank you very much.........450 files and counting. Ziad.
