Roll tide!! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Oct 2002 23:20:49 EDT From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Jewel's take on downloading music Here's quite a long and detailed article where Jewel gives her opinion on illegal downloading and this new campaign artists are mounting against it (which she says she's been asked to be a part of). Jewel reckons she's one of the most downloaded artists... If, in fact, her album has been downloaded 4.5 million times... that's very interesting. Here's the article: Jewel's Illegal Downloading Dilemma Wed Oct 2, 4:57 PM ET (10/2/02, 5 p.m. ET) -- Jewel is one of the many artists and songwriters asked to join Music United For A Strong Internet Copyright (MUSIC), but the singer is still undecided as to whether the all-star ad campaign is an effective means of putting a stop to illegal downloading. More than 90 artists from many genres are currently participating in an aggressive educational campaign organized by MUSIC to combat the epidemic of illegal music downloads. The campaign kicked off September 26 with full-page ads in The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times, as well as several trade publications. "I've been asked to be a part of it, and I may be actually," Jewel told LAUNCH this week. However, the singer-songwriter and Atlantic Records recording artist explained to LAUNCH that simply telling kids that downloading music is illegal may not have much of an effect on the overall problem. "I shouldn't say this, but I think it's silly to spend money on an ad campaign because kids are going to do what's convenient, and it's the wave of the future. And it's great for kids to be educated and know exactly what they're doing and, it is, in my eyes, stealing, but I download music." Jewel also said of downloading music, "It's really convenient, and I think people need to figure out how to either monitor it and make money off the Internet, or other, more productive things--figure out software to help control it." But one of the major problems with controlling illegal downloading is that new unlicensed "peer-to-peer" services are poppingup every day that are similar in function to popular (and illegal) services such as KaZaA, Morpheus, and Gnutella. Jewel was also quick to point out that her music is also very much a part of the roughly 2.6 billion files that are illegally downloaded every month. "I have the dubious distinction of being one of the most downloaded artists. I have about 4.5 million records that have been downloaded, so it's 4.5 million records I wasn't able to sell, which makes my life harder--for nothing else other than the fact my label needs to make money off me or else they don't promote me. So it's hard for me to make records and keep making the kind of records I want unless I'm selling records, but I think downloading is a fact of life and I think people need to figure out other ways to monetize their image and their success," she said. There's no doubt that wholesale music theft is having an impact on the bottom line of the music industry. "It's a huge impact. A really, really, big impact," said Jewel. "In the long run it hurts you if you're trying to make money selling records. I haven't been able to make money selling records. I've had to tour more, which means I haven't been able to do another record." Jewel recently added additional dates to her New Wild West solo acoustic tour of North America in support of This Way, which was released in November 2001. The album includes the singles "Standing Still," "Break Me," and the title track. Jewel's recently announced dates will keep her on the road through the month of November. - -- Jason Gelman, New York ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 03 Oct 2002 13:46:04 +1000 From: "Lauren Bendeich" Subject: [EDA] jewel at wireimage and question Hi Angels, Just thought I'd let you know there is new pics up at wireimage of Jewel performing at the 10th Anniversary of Self Magazine's "Pink Ribbon". Also wanted to let you all know that I've changed my email address. I used to be silver_starry_wings@hotmail.com. Not that I used to post that much anyway but I plan on changing that! Oh! and one more thing...lol sorry...I unfortunatly don't know the name of the song so this could make it more difficult ;-) but Jewel performed a song on the piano sometime in the Spirit tour. Does anyone remember this? I think it was called 'Last Standing Vegabond' or something. I could be way off track but anyway... Does anyone know where I could find lyrics for this? Or even better, somewhere where I could listen to or see a clip? Thanks heaps Bye! luv Lauren _________________________________________________________________ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V7 #441 ***************************
