Hawkins, "Mmm My Best Friend" The History of the Living Room Tour by MrBB Hi all, For those interested in the LRT phenomenon, here's how it all began. Back in April of 97, Cindy Lee Berryhill & Elizabeth Hummel were on a US tour together & doing a gig in Cambridge, MA. Their next gig, two nights later, was scheduled for Albany, NY (a very long drive). They discovered that the Albany venue mistakenly advertised their gig on the wrong date, so rather than drive all that way for a certain wash-out gig, they contacted members of the Jewel list & suggested doing an impromptu gig in the Boston area, if The EDAs could provide a venue & there was enough interest. Amazingly, within 24 hours The Snyder family in Boston volunteered their home & approximately 25 people from around New England (including my wife & I) descended on the Snyders' home with food, drink & piles of audio & video equipment. At first, everyone was a little anxious not knowing what to really expect, especially the musicians. As we eased into the performance, everybody relaxed & began totally getting into the spontaneity of the moment. This intimate approach dramatically changed the dynamics between performer & audience. The musicians were totally getting off on the fact that everyone really was there to listen & the audience experienced a "one on one" closeness not experienced in a "traditional setting" type performance. Total communication between us all inspired Cindy Lee & Elizabeth to play for almost 4 solid hours & everyone (including them) left a bit stunned & amazed at how great it was! It was certainly the most memorable night of their tour. Shortly after this, the musicians, myself & several other EDAs, began discussing the viability of doing a revolutionary approach to touring & somehow facilitate more of what happened in Boston. The idea was to cut out "all the suits," i.e., management, promoters, agents, etc., & book a summer tour directly into fans homes. I won't get into all the details but this was done & it was a huge success! Shows were booked in various EDA homes around the Northeast, promoted by fans on the Internet & attended by hundreds of people over the course of the tour. Every date was incredibly special in its own way. Some shows were actually in living rooms & several were outdoors in yards. Each attendee paid $10 toward the musicians. After that first LRT, word began circulating around San Diego & Boston's musician-communities & interest from many others began. Since that time, many other great musicians have taken the plunge & thoroughly enjoyed it! Several West Coast LRTs have taken place since then as well as sporadic Midwest LRTs & a few more in the Boston area. This "LRT Concept" has taken focus primarily with San Diego & Boston area musicians, but is always expanding. Musicians who've participated in LRT gigs include members of The Rugburns, Joy Eden Harrison, Gregory Page, Lisa Sanders, Mary Dolan, Randi Driscoll, Cindy Wasserman, Peggy Watson, Jody Blackwell, Jenny Bruce, Kevin So, Renatta Bratt & of course Elizabeth Hummel & Cindy Lee Berryhill, among others. Almost everything so far has been recorded & there exists an extensive archive of the LRTs so far. Some video clips will eventually be on various web sites & some of the recordings have been released (with authorization) on my "Future Folklore" tape series, which itself was inspired by that 1st "LRT gig" in Boston. This "LRT scene" continues to generate incredible interest. Many musicians have expressed interest for future LRT's, including fairly high profile artists like Freedy Johnston, Patty Griffin & Tara MacLean. Every musician who's done it, definitely wants to do it again. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Sep 2002 16:54:36 +1000 From: Barry Howarth Subject: [EDA] Re: This Way Video Hi Angels, Christy may well be right. The man may just be off camera. But why not show him earlier? Are the books, pictures, etc. , and the man, that just appear real or just what she's wishing for? The overwhelming impression I get is of a large empty room (except for Jewel and the bed) and a large empty bed. She's all alone with her dreams, memories, imaginings. I thought it could have been better. Some of the camera angles seemed a little weird. Then again I stink at using point and shoot cameras so who am I to talk =) The concept overall was really good, but it was missing something in my opinion. When one says 'Let's just stay this way in bed' That means US - but she was alone. What? Where was Ty or at least someone playing her love intrest? Based on the lyrics he wouldnt even have to do anything, actually he could have been asleep and everything would have been kosher as long as he just stayed with her. Im sure Ty would have done it for free. I would have =) Centralfloridaangel- Eliot _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Sep 2002 12:21:29 EDT From: W1GGY2@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Fun with Poltz (and Jewel) Oh my God, what a fun few days I just had! First off, Jewel showed up at Steve's Bottom Line show last night, but more on that later! Thursday I went up to Northampton, MA with Eric, Dan, Leif, & JJ to see Poltz play at the Iron Horse with Emm Grynner, Sarah Slean, and Leona Naess. Several Massachussettes EDA's were there as well. The show was great, though the sets were pretty short. Steve got everyone up and doing Yoga moves (and tequila shots hehe). I was thrilled to see him pull out Fence Around Your Heart which I've only seen him do once or twice with the Rugburns. He had the whole audience participating ("QUARTER INCH"!). That night I stayed over at Ted's in Paxton. Friday night was Ted's LRC with Steve. It was a great show and it was really cool to see lots of NEW EDA faces. Stacy from Connecticut turned out not to be a 15 year old girl but rather an older man LOL! Everyone was really nice and the show was a lot of fun. I requested a rarely played song called Pop Tart and when Alan heard it he noticed it sounded an awful lot like Lemondrops and Clover. Steve later confirmed that Jewel "borrowed" the chord progressions and even a line or two. After the show Steve debuted a few tracks from the upcoming CD. They sounded pretty cool....quite different anything he's done before. Steve, Dennis and I stayed over at Ted's that night. The next morning poor Steve was in bad shape from his allergies due to Ted's adorable (but somewhat less-than-intelligent) Golden Retriever, Moroni - or Moron I as Dennis dubbed him). While I was brushing my teeth Steve came in the bathroom and asked if I cared if he got in the shower. I was like - uh, no. I felt like I was on an episode of The Real World or something. We're just chatting away. And, no I didn't look. Well, you know, not really! :-) For the next leg of my Poltzie adventure I had to bring Steve down from Massachussetts to NYC for his sound check at the Bottom Line. I felt bad because we got there about 45 minutes late but the ride was fun. We talked a little about Jason Mraz and he said exactly what I've been saying for about 4 years now, that he thinks Jason could be as big as Jewel. So anyway, we got to the Bottom Line late so he asked me to wait for him because he didn't want to take all his stuff out of the car. So about an hour later (I was sooooo tired by this point) he came back out and I took him to his hotel. On the way his phone rang and he was talking to some friend about the gig later that night and did she want to come and Steve said he'd put her on the guest list....I was just concentrating on finding the hotel. After he hung up he goes "that was Jewel. She's coming tonight." So I sat in about another hour of traffic to get home and was so tired I almost fell asleep. But I did get myself back into the city and about halfway through Steve's early set (they do an early show and a late one at the BL) Jewel walked in and sat at a table and when Steve started YWMFM she went backstage and waited until after he told the David Cassidy story before coming onstage and singing the last verse. Then she told a story about how early on she and Steve were in Cleveland doing some local cable access show and she had done a drawing all over Steve's butt and the interviewer asked Steve what was something no one knew about Jewel and he said that she could draw really well and that he had one of her drawings here and then he dropped his pants. I have no idea what brought this story on but it was definitely a new one! Anyway, then they did I Thought I Saw You Last Night and then she left. The audience absolutely loved him at both shows. Well, that was about it. Sorry this was so long....this was actually the short version! ;-) "Hi" to everyone I saw and met over the last few days! And thanks Ted for the awesome hospitality! amy n. Oh yea, one more thing if anyone is still reading this, Steve wanted a copy of Foolish Games from when the 'burns and Jewel played the Hard Rock in Vegas on New Year's Eve. I'm not sure what year it was but if anyone has that could you please email it to me? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Sep 2002 15:59:53 EDT From: JewelRocks413@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Atlantic City Does anyone know if u have to be 18 to attend the concert in Atlantic City since it is in a casino ?????? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Sep 2002 16:01:52 EDT From: JewelRocks413@aol.com Subject: Re: [EDA] Serve The Ego I cant even see Jewel liking this remix, and it is her own song! Hey Guys Well I already told you that Serve the Ego jumped from 40-30 on last week's Dance/Club Play charts... well it seems that it has jumped again from 30-19 on this week's chart! It's literally just flying up the chart. Jewel looks to have a serious Club hit on her hands. hahaha.. Maybe Atlantic will take this as a sign and release the song to radio. Maybe a shortened version of one of the remixes? Or even the album version? Any thoughts? Steve Ps- if the song continues to jump so rapidly up the chart, the Maxi single could actually sell a few copies, which in turn could get Jewel onto the Hot 100. That'd be cool. She hasn't seen that chart since Standing Still. :) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Sep 2002 22:21:54 EDT From: StuartnDee@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Jewel on E tonight Jewel was on E tonight showing the making of the This Way video. And since she is playing ten minutes from my house, I'd like to see her. Also, commenting on the This Way video, I think it kinda sucks. No offense, but my concept was mind blowing compared to that, and funny as well (for example the line "I don't think ahead" would have shown Jewel thinking ahead to falling off the horse and then me (I planned on putting myself in the video) "Let's just stay this was in bed" all busted up from the accident and in bed with a cast, it would have been comical. The rest of my concept was very very good. That's just a dumb example from two lines but you get the point. It's just too bad that the entry was void in my state for some dum reason, otherwise Mz Kilcher and I would probably be buddy buddy right now, LoL. WB all you lil angels.
