Jewel sang a country ballad in Boise. It is a love song written by Jewel for her dad to sing with words like "Oh, my angel, sweet sweet angel", and "your body is slender like the wing of a bird" and she yodels near the end (no it's not chime bells). Does anyone know it's name or anything about it? Bob ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Sep 2002 20:33:53 -0300 From: "FabioJJ" Subject: Re: [EDA] Anyone know the name of this song? Although we disagree about Avril, we're actually friends (jewel20rox@hotmail.com) so the "freaken retarded" thing was probably meant as a joke. I just wanted to say that because there have been some negative responses to the post and I think the insult was taken seriously. She should have clarified that in her response. Jewel broadens her sugar-coated personae
Singer displays humour and irony at Orpheum show

Jennifer Van Evra
Vancouver Sun

Monday, September 02, 2002

I've never really known what to make of Jewel. On the surface, she seems to be
just about every female singer-songwriter stereotype, rolled into one bizarre
little ball. She's the bleeding, heartbroken puppy dog. She's the independent,
self-assured feminist. She's the innocent, doe-eyed little girl who has just
found innocent, doe-eyed love. She's the opinionated, politically savvy
activist. She's the aw-shucks, down-home country gal. She's the sexy pop diva.
But during her solo Sunday night show at the Orpheum, she showed that she can
actually pull off all (or at least most) of those personae -- and do it
convincingly.

With bare feet and dressed in faded jeans and a gold velvet tank top, Jewel
strolled casually onto the stage and launched her intimate two-hour set with
"Do You Want to Play?" a song that asks, "Does anyone believe in love
anymore?"

The song set the tone for much of the set, which was filled with songs, new
and old, about falling in love, being in love, feeling ambivalent about love,
nursing wounds after lost love, having the courage to look for love again, and
seeing the last love with a new love. (I had to wonder how many boyfriends
there were begrudgingly sitting through the show, wishing they were at home
watching Terms of Endearment or Sleepless in Seattle.)

And there were definitely moments when I thought if she performed one more
cliche-laden tune about the crush of heartbreak -- sung in falsetto so
saccharin they could package the stuff -- someone should run up and give the
Alaskan chanteuse a good solid cuff to the head.

But then there were the moments when Jewel dropped the cutesy bit, and
performed songs from her latest album This Way such as "Jesus Loves You," and
"The New Wild West," in which she belts out lyrics that are as biting as they
are smart. At those points, her depth, her confidence, and her broadening
ability were able to shine through. At other times, she allowed glimmers of
humour and irony to come through, which came as a welcome relief from the
sugar-coated material.

Alaskan singer/songwriter Stuart Mathis kicked off the evening with an
impressive solo set. Using an electronic box to loop guitar rhythms, and
playing melodies over them as he sang, Mathis quickly won the crowd over with
sweet grooves, a velvet voice, and an irresistibly warm on-stage presence.

hehe... Do You Want To Play now has a new line, huh?? Silly writers...

Hi all,
I just read an article in an Australian magazine which stated that Russell
Crowe was sitting front row at Jewel's San Diego concert and that she
apparently dedicated a song to " a wonderful Aussie friend,whose name I
can't say because you all know him"
Was anybody at that concert who could tell me what song it was that she sang
for him?
Thanks,
Natalie

I was at that show.
Jewel did dedicate a song to "my Australian friend," but she did not say
those other things. I don't remember which song it was. I learned at
the show that the song was dedicated to Russell Crowe, who was at the
show. I was in the front row, too, but I didn't see (or notice) him.

im in a band, well more like a duet... me and my friend skippy. he
sings, and plays guitar, and i play bass and guitar, and sing only for
him. anyway, he does an AWESOME version of near you always. he does it
in like his sexy guy voice, he puts some grunge and grittyness to it, yet
its still soft and sweet, it sounds so great. hes a jewel fan too, hes
going with me to see her in satatoga next week, the 11th. but when we
start performing we want to make it a regular thing at our shows to do a
cover of near you always... ill come up with a sexy bass part. we know
we want to do a jewel song, an homage to jewel. he likes to do race car
driver too, but near you always is the best.
