Making a copy for someone of a commercially available CD is called pirating, is illegal and cannot be allowed on this list. Asking someone to make a copy for you is a no-no too. It would be better to ask for somone heading to a future show to try to buy a copy of the CD for you, or perhaps find out if this artist has a web site of their own and obtain one there. I won't say much about the performance because others have already covered it pretty well. However, someone did ask if anyone stayed after to see Jewel exit, which I did. She came out only about 15-20 minutes after the show, which was great being a waited a good 30-45 minutes after the Houston show. As soon as she came out, she made the announcement that she would try to sign one thing per person because she had to catch a flight. She patiently signed about 15 things, including my NWA book and I then shook her hand. She was very friendly and humble as she was in my last experience of meeting her. She then walked to the van which was taking her to the airport, waved and told everyone goodbye and thanked us for coming, got in the van, waved goodbye again, and she was gone. Now, I have a favor to ask. I saw several people video recording the show, and i'm sure there were others getting audio recordings. So by chance, would anyone of those people happen to be an EDA who be so kind as to trade that recording with me? I got some great pictures of her as she was signing things and many CDs to trade if at all interested. But if you recorded this show, I would truely appreciate a copy of it! Lesley HotJobs, a Yahoo! service - Search Thousands of New Jobs ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Aug 2002 12:18:21 -0500 From: "Rachel DeSchepper" Subject: [EDA] Review of Des Moines concert This is from the Des Moines Register: A gem of a concert Jewel sings from the heart By LORI DRAFAHL Register Correspondent 08/21/2002 - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In a music world saturated with over-produced, manufactured pop sensations, thank God there's Jewel to keep us grounded. Her Monday night performance at the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines made it clear the singer-songwriter knows her roots and doesn't intend to leave them. Jewel's Des Moines concert marked the fourth date of her solo acoustic tour. For an artist who says she thrives on live performances, the intimacy of the Civic Center created the perfect setting. The stage was adorned with nothing more than three guitars and a flower arrangement on a small table. When she sauntered casually up to the microphone in a sexy, red slip dress and single-strap heels, it was as if she had invited 2,250 of her closest fans into her home for a personal show. No doubt about it, Jewel was in her element. Her song choices were a mix of favorites from her three top-selling albums along with some lesser-knowns. She belted out a powerful message about society's lack of civility in "The New Wild West" off her newest album, "This Way." Later she teased the audience with a flirty version of "Morning Song," giving coquettish smiles in return for appreciative cheers. She also enchanted with ditties such as a lighthearted polka with lyrics that ask, "Do you wanna catch a cold with me?" And then there were the hilarious innuendoes she slyly conveyed in a tune about a race car driver. Few can run the gamut between politics and humor in their writing so deftly as Jewel. Between songs, she told stories and bantered with the audience like they were old friends. At times she asked for requests, and at times she called the shots. "You'll take what I give and like it," she said to hush a rowdy crowd. Later, in response to a loud admirer, she cooed, "Flattery does get you everywhere." Much to its liking, she played the audience as well as she played her guitar. But the versatility and elegance of Jewel's voice made the biggest impression, even more than her intelligent lyrics and witty remarks. Her signature pixie-like vocals in "Little Sister" switched to commanding, powerful wails about freedom during "Life Uncommon." During a country number she broke into the succinct yodels she learned as a child growing up in Alaska. Then, as part of her encore, she sang the "40s tune "Too Darned Hot" with deep, sultry sass. There's no limit to what her voice can do. At the end of the night, Jewel encouraged the audience to check out her new online artist showcase, Soul City Cafe, created to support undiscovered songwriters. Jewel chose one of the Cafe's featured artists, Scooter Scudieri, as the opening act for her tour. Touting himself as an independent artist free of an agent, manager or record company, Scudieri delivered simple acoustical arrangements with uplifting lyrics and catchy melodies. Although written less poetically than Jewel, Scudieri's messages paralleled the same optimistic themes and were well received by the audience. The high intensity of "Sorry Doesn't Mean What it Used To" brought shouts of approval with its driving guitar rhythm and raspy vocals. And the clear, rich vocals of the ballad "Pig Tails" about Scudieri's daughter also brought strong reaction. Hopefully, more singer-songwriters will rise up before we are overcome by the "Easy Mac" music being fed to today's youth. Bob Dylan and James Taylor may be lost on them, but there's still hope for those such as Jewel to take music back to what it's supposed to be: authentically from the heart. ~Rachel~ _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Aug 2002 14:34:52 EDT From: DixieJewelAngel@aol.com Subject: [EDA] New clips on jeweljk Lol, have yall heard them yet? the one on interviews is sooooooo funny!! its all soundcheck clips this time but they are cool! the angel that is jewels number *1* fan hehe! ~Michele I love Jewel!!! Hi All, The "New Wild West Tour" is rolling along and in this more intimate solo acoustic context, Jewel has been offering more of her comical spontaneous side and a diverse range of song material. And her shoulder has healed to the point where she is relatively comfortable playing her guitar all night. In addition to stripped down vocal/guitar renderings of songs from her albums, she's planning on unveiling additional new material from her 2002 songwriting burst. Those of you who have been following Jewel's career the longest, will also be intrigued because she's been digging into her past to resurrect a few older favorites and unreleased rarities. This will continue with a few surprises in store. With her new material accumulating, she's also begun thinking in terms of recording her next album, so there likely won't be such an extended wait between albums this time. Although sessions are not yet planned, it's possible that preproduction may begin before the end of the year. She's enjoyed touring so much this year, that plans are also being made to add additional concerts into November, several Christmas-related events in December and additional touring early next year is now being considered. As new concert dates are confirmed, we'll keep you informed and you can always check the jeweljk.com calendar page for all currently confirmed dates. There's also exciting planning in the works for the Soul City Cafe community and additional Jewel news to unveil in coming weeks. So stick around! It is only being played on about 20 out of 90 stations. Some of those stations are playing it almost 40 times a week but it still could be more, (most songs at #1 are being played about 50 to 65 times a week per station). This Way isn't loosing or gaining any big amount of spins per week either. It's just kinda hanging out where it is, not moving up or down. If you don't want This Way to begin to loose spins and fall ending up being her biggest flop yet please call your local radio station and request it everyday, ( I did this for a month and finally just 2 weeks ago my station started to play This Way, I hear it almost everyday now). Also it would help alot if everyone could request at the stations below.
