I think this topic has generated meaningful discussions, unlike some discussions that go on, on this list. I saw Jewel on July 3rd here in Michigan...like I said in an earlier post, the audience was dull... sitting there like zombies. ( Like one is expected to sit when watching an Orchestra!) I stood up a few times b/c I was really into the music...no 1 screamed at me not once! ( I was lucky I suppose) To me there is nothing wrong with standing up (from time to time)...it shows the performer that you're enjoying the show. Right?!? I know if I was Jewel and everyone was just sitting down.. looking bored...I would think I suck or something. ....Just my thoughts. Howdy y'all, I was wondering, since a year has almost past since Jewel's private appearance in Nashville, is anyone wanting to have a reunion/gathering this year? I haven't heard anything on it so far, so I thought I'd wake everyone up :) The show was on August 5, but that might be a bit to much of a short notice for a gathering. If anyone wants to do this, we should go ahead and start planning now. Please get back to me, or post it to the list, as soon as possible. Below is a link to some pics from the gathering and outside the show lat year. Thanks, take care, http://eda.faithweb.com/ Lee Garner Confederate EDA Yahoo! On paper, Jewel is a music critic's dream. She's got a strong personality, she writes her own songs and she actually sings them live with a rich, full-ranged voice. Her songs are about everyday people and their link to spirituality, often focusing on the small details of daily living to try to find clues to unlock the greater purpose and meaning of life. She's got the rock 'n' roll pedigree. She struggled, she was homeless, she did it her way and now she's a huge success. In concert she sings her hits, changing them around just enough to keep them interesting. She does unreleased songs, she does a solo acoustic set. And she's mighty easy on the eyes, my friend. So for the hardcore Jewel fan, Wednesday night's concert at Red Rocks must have been that dream come true. But for the unconvinced, it was still pretty unconvincing. For all her good intentions and noble actions, at the end of the night Jewel's music still rings hollow. The best answer might be there's a difference between simple and simplistic, between insightful and insipid. She means well, but she just doesn't have the depth to back it up. She took the stage to a standing ovation, but within a few notes, the crowd was politely sitting down. This is Jewel, not Metallica. Despite continued strong radio airplay, her fan base may be waning. Red Rocks was far from full, and a good portion of the crowd was men with mortified "I'm here because I love my wife" looks on their faces. She served up plenty of songs off her latest and best (if slightly new-agey) album, This Way, pulling out her latest hit, Standing Still, just two songs into her set. Jesus Loves You was a highlight of the set until the end of the song when she broke into some Celine-like yelps that foreshadow a Vegas run sometime in her future. She explained that because of her recent calf-wrangling accident and resulting broken clavicle and rib that she wouldn't play much guitar. "But I'm such a good dancer you won't miss my guitar playing," she said self-effacingly. She pulled it out anyway for her acoustic set, peaking with her crossover hit You Were Meant For Me, as well as Little Sister, both off her debut LP, Pieces of You. But a version of the excruciatingly earnest Hands was made even worse when delivered with a swaggering self-importance. An unreleased song, Does Anyone Believe in Love?, fared better with sweet sentiments and unswerving faith. Jewel has plenty of both, and that's what will keep her afloat for years to come. No matter what the critics say. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Jul 2002 12:48:46 -0700 (PDT) From: Julianne Byrd Subject: [EDA] angelfood Ok angels, listen up! I saw Jewel in Aug '99 in West Palm Beach (the last show of her Spirit tour. I was 4th row and when she called us to 'come closer' i had my spirit cd, ANWA and a black sharpie handy. I was going to sell the signed cd elsewhere but instead i would rather trade it for NEW angelfood (This Way tour only)- She signed it kinda sloppy on the inside cover. I can't give up the book cause she drew a little picture in it and read 3 poems from it at the end of the show. anyway i will also include 4x6 original prints of her i took that night (i was SO close!)- she touched my finger during 'Angel Standing By'- it was great. Anyway you can see how desperate I am for this way recordings- I guess whoever answers first w/this way shows i dont have i will trade with...thanks guys!! I'm not complaining because I did have really nice seats at the shows I've attended, but most of the time all the ticket prices are the same and everyone can't always be so fortunate. Also, this would really raise the whole issue of scalping and selling overpriced tickets of that was the mindset of everyone out there. --Lindsay - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stacey Hamilton" To: Sent: Thursday, July 18, 2002 3:45 PM Subject: Re: [EDA] sitting vs standing > OOrrrrrrrr, just get seats in the front row!
