When you write at a pace as fast as hers, you tend to remember what you wrote, just not where you put it in the song. I have a song called "Don't Stay" (it's on our website), that I wrote when I was around 17 and my band is always laughing at me because they'll break into it and I have to scramble for a lyric sheet because I've re-written the lyrics to that so many times. I tend to average on writing about 1-2 new songs (total songs, not just lyrics) a week. It's hard to remember all that sometimes. Go look at a lot of old Beatles live footage...even the great John Lennon screwed up his lyrics on the famous rooftop concert.... First, I think Steve did an excellent job of summing up the show (ironically, I was seated directly behind him...), which was a fantastic display of Jewel at her best, and reflective of the refreshed energy she has found since returning to performing from the Nashville show on. Much more from the heart than her last show in Toronto in August of '99. However, Steve was being kind in assessing the sound during the concert. Basically, the sound was a total disgrace. For a venue such as Massey Hall, which is reputed to have as high a calibre of acoustics as Carnegie Hall, it was a real shame. The sound was just awful for M2M, and while it improved for Jewel, there is no excuse for the mediocrity of it. Jewel certainly rose above it, but it will be interesting to see how the CBC recording turns out when they broadcast it. Perhaps the sound was so bad because it was geared for the recording and not the audience? Someone with more knowledge of these things would likely have more insight into this than I do. In any case, I've been to five (non-Jewel) shows in four different venues in the last few days, and the sound was 100 times better in each and every one of them than the Massey Hall show was. What a drag. The only other thing that marred the show was, as Steve pointed out, the completely incomprehensible decision to have an 11:00 "curfew", which seemed to surprise Jewel as much as the rest of us. She had obviously been planning on a much longer show for us. Who knows what treasures she may have been saving for the encores.... I also want to follow up on the whole "sensuality" aspect of Jewel that Steve brought up. Since I first saw Jewel over seven years ago, I have always observed that her sensuality is - for the most part - based on playfulness. When Steve said it's not like Britney Spears, he's entirely right. It's not aimed to provoke; it's not fake; it's not pouty or snarly. Her sensuality is fun! And romantic! And full of life! She inevitably generates shrieks of appreciation from the audience when she performs "Morning Song", particularly the last time she sings "I'm going to give you some more" in her mischievous voice, as she did in Toronto Friday. Just check out how she practically channels the spirit, and voice, of Mae West all throughout her portrayal of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz show. There are also many example of the romantic side of her in a wide variety of her ballads ("Break Me", "This Way", etc.) ,but for the most part, to my mind, Jewel's attitude towards sensuality is not "Look at me! I'm so hot" that is so pervasive in most young singers and their videos: Her attitude is very much "Do You Want to Play?" (which I always felt was a very sexual song...) Belated happy Canada Day to all Canadian EDAs, and an early happy July 4th to everyone in the US. Jewel's show last night in Milwaukee was amazing... Let me start off by telling you that in was a general admission show, so everyone was bunched together, but we were still in front becuase we got there at 2:30 even though she didn't start until 10. M2M was great. We got to meet them before the show becuase we saw there bus so we got picstures and autographs and all that good stuff. Now this crowd LOVED Jewel, They were so vocal, singing every word to every song!! And screaming and applauding after each chorus!!! She was in the blue jean-skirt iwth the white top and the two belt thingie. She was amazing vocally - hitting any note she wanted to. All in all....it was the best show I've been to yet!!! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Jul 2002 12:01:38 -0400 From: "Erica Byers" Subject: [EDA] cameras?/meadowbrook have they allowed cameras at her concerts? I donated the book and sent it to Chrissy who's in charge of the project (it's called Jewel Journey sort of borrowed from Circle Journey). It would be cool to hear from some of the people who have gotten it and passed it on and also to know it's current status. At the end it will come back to me so I can make sure the rules were followed (ie no poetry) and then I will send it to the J-Team. :-) Amy In a message dated 7/2/2002 10:20:55 PM Eastern Daylight Time, owner-jewel-digest@smoe.org writes: > Ashley wrote: > > Back a few months ago there was talk of circulating a book around the EDA's > > that would eventually be sent to Jewel. I'm not trying to dis anyone, but with me, the clothes I wear onstage are the clothes I would wear to school or go shopping. I'm not gonna go up onstage and dress different. Britney Spears goes up onstage and dresses like a showgirl. She's not being herself up there because she's dancing like a ho. Is she ho? She says she's a virgin. Y'know, it's just not clicking. I don't know about yall, but when I listen to music...I don't just sit there motionless like a brick. (Especially at a concert...a Jewel concert!) Most of the time, these people were just staring straight ahead...not even clapping. I'm like...??? As for the SCC performers...Scooter Scudieri was alright, he seems pretty cool. I didn't really like that chic Rebeka Reed. She had on some freaky wicked weird pants. (maybe some 1 else can describe them) Her singing wasn't all that hot either.
