I went and saw Jewel last night at PromoWest Pavilion in Columbus. I was fortunate enough to be allowed backstage to meet her and it was something else. First of all, we were taken back in groups of 6 or 8 or something like that. I brough my Save the Linoleum CD for her to sign and she thought it was some weird bootleg which I thought was strange that she didn't even remember that CD but she was nonetheless impressed. She flipped it over to look at the picture on the back and the songlist and I commented on "Flower" and she got kind of reminiscent and said, "That's a good song, isn't it?" and I of course agreed. But let me tell you one thing...when she first came out I almost didn't think it was her. She has lost a LOT of weight. I would say she is probably a size 2 or 4 now. I later found out that she has a personal trainer because she was so run down after the Spirit Tour that it was decided she work with someone to get into shape. So they don't refer to her as "skinny" they say she is "fit". But I still think she is pretty skinny. She looks great, don't get me wrong. But in a few pics on her tourbook she looks a little like Cate Blanchett... I don't have a songlist because I wasn't going to sit there and write every single song down because I wanted to enjoy the show. She played a few songs by herself: Morning Song, Cold Song, You Were Meant for Me and one more I think. Unfortunately, she didn't play Carnivore or Chime Bells by the night's end. She did play a new song and it was the first time it was ever played. I think it might be called "Love Isn't for Lovers Anymore" but I'm not sure. She didn't say what it was called, that was just in the chorus and it makes sense that she would call the song that. All in all, it was a great show. Her voice and range never cease to amaze me and she was in a great mood. From what I heard her Pittsburgh show from the night before was her best show so far in the tour so she was ready to try to one-up herself in Columbus. I must say, she did... ~dilara - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: Click Here ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Jul 2002 10:26:47 -0400 From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: [EDA] very nice pittsburg review Here's a very nice review of the Pittsburg show: Concert Review: Jewel takes the high road Monday, July 01, 2002 By John Young She still yodels. She still sings acoustic guitar- based folk songs. She still plays the hits that made her famous. But there is something altogether different about Jewel. Performing at the Amphitheatre at Station Square on Saturday night, the Alaska-raised singer/songwriter seemed to be out to prove that there's more to her music than casual listeners might think. Backed by a versatile, dynamic five-piece band, Jewel deftly shifted musical styles in playing almost every track from her latest album "This Way." She put a bit of country lilt and twang into her singing on " 'Til We Run Out of Road," while the music stayed rooted in rock. "Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone" turned into a slide-guitar-fueled blues rave-up, while "Everybody Needs Someone Sometime" was pure Stones. With its big chorus full of "Ooo-ooo's," "Do You Want to Play" could've come right out of the Alanis Morissette alterna-pop songbook. Best of the new songs was "Serve The Ego." The tune snaked along to pre-recorded beats and sinewy bass lines, while Jewel sang the chorus, in particular, with an almost Middle Eastern flair. Venturing into musical and lyrical territory usually tread by the likes of Peter Gabriel and Patti Smith, Jewel still managed to sound strong and distinctive. Noting that it has been three years since she last performed in Pittsburgh, Jewel appeared to be surprised by the size and the level of devotion of the Amphitheatre crowd. When she tried to begin her solo acoustic set with "Morning Song," Jewel even felt the need to shush the crowd. "When you guys talk when I sing I think I'm boring you," she scolded. More likely her fans were just warming up to loudly sing along with every line of songs like "Little Sister" and the silly live staple "Do You Wanna Catch a Cold With Me." Fans out to hear all the hits weren't disappointed, either. "Standing Still" appeared early in the full band set, while "Foolish Games" made it into the encore. "Who Will Save Your Soul" turned into a 15-minute-long instrumental showpiece, the song's reggae vibe being played up and Jewel turning verse lyrics into frenetic scat singing. Jewel also performed "Hands," and its hopeful, direct lyrics sounded particularly relevant during turbulent times. There was nothing remotely probing or challenging about the opening act, M2M, though. It's tough to be taken seriously when your first hit appears on the "Pokemon" soundtrack, but at least Norwegian singer/songwriters Marit Larsen and Marion Ravn harmonized with distinction. They also managed to play one song with a big, memorable hook ("Don't"). At one point in Jewel's career it was probably fair to question whether her material would lean more toward the fluffy or the substantial, too. Her show here resoundingly answered that she's attempting to take the high, hard road artistically. That she has managed to flourish commercially as she explores her writing makes the feat that much more laudable. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Jul 2002 15:00:48 +0000 From: "Amy Emerman" Subject: [EDA] homophobia (In response to Rowdius' post) It's homophobia when the person says blanketly "I am really uncomfortable or freaked out that guys on this list might be gay" which is essentially what he said. However, the guy apologized and I think he learned a good lesson. I don't think he's a bad guy at all, probably just from the boonies where most people are still stuck in the closet. He apologized, so let's move on to bigger and better things...like talking about how awesome Jewel is! _________________________________________________________________ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Jul 2002 11:41:34 -0400 From: Mgsju@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Reviews My bone of contention with the reviewer whose comments I mentioned are not necessarily with what he said-he is a reviewer, he is paid to see a show and offer his opinion, be it positive or negative. My problem is that the entire review just seemed focused on his assessment of her (or more appropriately, Atlantic Records',) marketing plan rather than on the show itself. I wholeheartedly agree that a critic's opinion does not and should not matter in terms of what I think, however, I hate when they use their publishing platform to rail against the entirety of an artist's career rather than to offer a summary and opinion of the show. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Jul 2002 11:30:00 -0400 From: "sean stevens" Subject: [EDA] Wallingford 6-25 Hey there- I taped the show - came out great.
