The reviewer for The Philadelphia Inquirer decided to take this particular moment to highlight in his review and basically labeled her a "savvy marketing and business woman". He then proceeded to say that the reason why her current singles are not getting as much radio play is because her new stuff tries too hard to be commercially viable and it is not as effective as the fluffy, California pop sound she employed on her first record. Of course, I thought his whole review was crap but I was just curious as to how other people's hometown newspapers have been responding to her shows. I know she has never gotten the respect she deserves from the critics but after seeing Wednesday night's performance, I thought "There's no way anyone could not see why her fans are so "adoring" (his words). Has anyone else read a review that they thought was just way off? I mean I know we are all biased but it is hard to see how someone could see her live, particularly for the first time, and not be just blown away by it. Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend. The site featured several "professional" critics for some newspaper who listed the best and worst of the last decade, and POY just happened to be on almost everyone's worst list. If anyone has the link, I'd appreciate it. She doesn't >need marketing or sales to sound (and write) damn good. I think this whole pro-Avril vs anti-Avril is more a disagreement over style and taste in music. I listened to some clips of Holly Miranda after I read the above post and she's ok. Yes, it's rawer than Avril. But it also really doesn't do that much for me. It seems a little bland. At least what I heard. The music never moved anywhere. It was also kind of ramble-y...at least what I heard. Like an amateur Ani, but not quite there yet. This could be an argument over professional vs amateur as well. Jewel had a more amateur sound when she first hit the music scene. Some folks found that off-putting, some found it refreshing. It's all a matter of taste. Personally, I like both professional and amateur, but not all of either. Again, a matter of taste. I like Jewel, but to tell the truth, some of her songs (even though I like them in general) seem kind of immature and simplistic to me. Some people think Jewel's too simplistic for them And here's another thing. Jewel is more simplistic musically. Others more simplistic lyrically. Again, it's all in taste. As for me, I like simplistic lyrics if the music is good, but not if the music is simplistic. Make any sense? And then there's some highly professional music that I just don't like, good lyrics or not. But some people do. None of them deserve any less than the others. What I like best though is good music and good lyrics all rolled into one. :) Amber Dawn Reed singer/songwriter http://www.amberreed.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Jun 2002 13:26:14 -0700 From: "Jewel Fan" Subject: Re: [EDA] NJC: I appoligize:( I think it is I, who should applogize for all of this. I was talking to Charlie and i happened to mention that fact that there are a few "gay" men on the list. Trust me, they aren't all some stereotype you have in your head. I've been to concerts and of the people I knew, many were gay or bi. So if you took the entire crowd, I'd bet you a good portion of them were gay or at least bi. You don't have to be hanging on the arm of someone of the same sex to be gay. And you don't have to fit some ridiculous stereotype either. I saw one post that was nothing more than the guy checking in to proclaim his heterosexuality. It's sad that gay people have to be cautious about who to and where they state their sexuality, when straight people can just jump up and say, "oh hey, I'm straight, don't worry about me". Cause that is like a statement of having a 'clean bill of health' whereas stating you're gay has consequences. I'm not even going to say yay or nah here, cause it's really not important. Hello all, Hope that those of you who went to the Toronto show had a great time. Just had to let whomever may be interested know about this article about BC's Allison Crowe. As you probably recall, Allison was the most recent artist featured on Jewel's "favourites" page on her site. I have the privilege of opening Allison's Toronto show next Saturday so I wanted everyone to know about this great story she got in yesterday's Globe. If you're into discovering someone new (or if you've already discovered her), check it out. The guys will have been wearing Cher t-shirts and glitter on their faces. They would also probably have been wearing loafers and some fetching cargo pants. The girls will have been wearing Birkenstock sandals and of course dungarees. Maybe with a Melissa Etherige or Indigo Girls shirt underneath. Seriously, though, you're not going to be able to spot most gay people in a crowd. I think the fact that they were at a Jewel concert would have showed that they weren't the stereotypical gay guys anyway - wouldn't they be more comfortable at an Enrique or Ru Paul show? And the amount of stereotypical butch lesbians is probably easily outnumbered by 'normal' looking chicks who just have a different preference. The whole thing is silly and I totally agree that the guy who sent a post saying 'I'm straight' to the list was pretty pathetic. Also he said he liked Linkin Park which totally proved that he is not straight. What kind of straight guy listens to boy bands like Linkin Park? :P Cheers, Tom PS - Please take paragraphs one and three with a pinch of salt. A bit of light humour is the way I like to deal with these brilliantly volatile situations. Thankyou. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V7 #305 ***************************
