I am fairly new to this list but I just have to say something! Vanessa, Michelle, Avril, etc...WHAT? They are young somewhat talented girls- I have seen them all live. Vanessa's voice is not that great outside of the studio, Michelle's lyrics are...well, i can't think of a word...simple in a nonsense sort of way, and I would have liked Avril if I were 15- I will probably get reamed by all of you for this! Not trying to start anything, I love all you angels! Jewel is an awesome talent... Alas, she did not play Nicotine Love.. but it was close.. I'll get to that in a minute. First of all, she was in fantastic voice tonight.. totally breathtaking. The venue was very small and intimate, and had decent acoustics, so everything sounded pretty good. The drums were a little loud at times, but nothing that detracted from the enjoyment of the show. The acoustic set was definitely the highlight.. although the second band set was also fantastic... lots of energy. The only dissapointment was that she had to cut the encore to just Foolish Games due to the venue curfue... which was irritating. I'm gonna go through the show song by song.. because it's fun and not that many people have been doing that. I Won't Walk Away - a good opener. Jewel's mic volume was a little low and she kept gesturing to her sound guy to turn it up. He did, and there were no further problems. Standing Still - very energetic and fun, but I've seen this song performed live so many times. She took gifts from the audience after this song. A guy in front of me gave her a rose. My friend went to give her an empty water bottle as a joke, but she had moved onto something else by the time by friend got going with it. Do You Want To Play - I LOVE this song live. It was definitely a highlight.. it translates very well live from the record, and it's hard to believe it was the same song she played on the Spirit Tour. It's evolved so much, and I think for the better. Jesus Loves You - This is a song that I think will end up being played just acoustically on future tours, and probably for the better... although I like the electric guitar beginning, and as opposed to the acoustic. Hands - I've never loved this song, but always liked it ok... it's very good live.. it's evolved well I think. The vocals at the end are great. Til We Run Out of Road - Much better than the album version. Her vocals at the end are incredible. She really let loose and let the scream go on this one... really impressive. This Way - my least favourite track from the new album... so not a highlight.. but it was ok. What's Simple is True - they've changed this slightly. The electric guitar part in the chorus really adds a lot I think. I liked it. Ok.. then the solo set started. At this point me and the people around me were screaming for Nicotine Love. I heard some other people too... thanks to all those who screamed because of my post. Instead she played: Everything Breaks - a gorgeous song. 'Nuff said. Then... again, more screaming for Nicotine Love. At that point she said something like "I'd love to play that but I don't remember it.. it's been years since I've played it".. or something like that. So then we said "we have the words!" and she was like "you have the words?". At that point everyone around me was like "go!!".. so I tried to find the lyrics and get my shit together.. but by the time I did and got to the stage she had moved on to.. Carnivore - I wasn't all that dissapointed, because this is an amazing song. It was a killer version.. although she left out a couple of lyrics at the end. And she changed some other lyrics as well. Violet Eyes - this is a really emotional song.. and there was not a peep out of the audience the whole time she was singing it. A definite highlight. Little Sister - nice... but I've heard it a lot Morning Song - ditto Cold Song - people got a kick out of this You Were Meant For Me - nice... nobody sang along much so she sang the whole thing without stopping to let the audience carry a verse or anything. then: Life Uncommon - amazing vocally. Down So Long - they've made this a little jazzier.. it's similar but (in my opinion) a better version than on the Spirit Tour. Definitely a major highlight Serve the Ego - weird. The bass seemed too high and was reverberating throughout the place. Jewel seemed annoyed by this and kept gesturing to the sound guy to fix it.. but I don't think he realised. Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone - at this point everybody rushed the stage and created a mini mosh-pit down front. She barely had to work to get people on their feet.. I think she was really happy about that. She was walking from one side of the stage to the other touching people's hands. Everybody Needs Someone Sometimes - another highlight.. really rocking New Wild West - AWESOME. Jewel and the band take this song to the absolute max. The lighting was fantastic too. Who Will Save Your Soul - the bass solo at the beginning was really cool. It almost turned into a whole 'nother song at one point, with the bassist and the drummer going really fast on this weird beat. It was really neat. Jewel's vocals were incredible. then.. Foolish Games - Jewel informed us that she had just been told that she had a very strict curfue of 11pm and was only going to be able to play one more song. She seemed irritated by this, as she seemed prepared to play several more. I was looking forward to the jazz covers too. But Foolish Games was amazing. Overall, it was an incredible concert. Better than the Spirit Tour in my opinion. The venue was better and more intimate, and Jewel was more into it. It's a shame that she didn't get to Nicotine Love.. but that's ok.. Carnivore was great. I have to say I felt like kind of a dork at the front of the stage with my pile of printed out pages with lyrics.. especially since she moved onto another song. But oh well. It was kinda funny. I have to say - one thing I've noticed the few times I've seen her in concert is that she's an extremely... sexual.. performer. I don't know how to explain it... it's not overt like Britney Spears or whatever... there's just this underlying sense of sexuality going on whenever she's onstage. Does anybody else notice this? I was talking about it with the person I took to the concert (who isn't a Jewel fan).. and she agreed with me. It's an interesting thing. Anybody have any comments? Anyway.. that's it. Sorry for the long post, but it was an exciting night! later Steve ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Jun 2002 00:47:07 -0500 From: "Eric L." Subject: [EDA] NJC: It's all been done before I'm not going to insult either Avril or Michelle. But I wanted to make sure their fans on this list know that, for the last decade or so, Juliana Hatfield and Liz Phair (among others) have been doing the exact same thing. Their sound is nothing new or original...what's that line in Complicated? Oh yeah, "it's all been done before". I wonder if Avril realizes how true that is? I'm not trying to dis anyone, but with me, the clothes I wear onstage are the clothes I would wear to school or go shopping. I'm not gonna go up onstage and dress different. Britney Spears goes up onstage and dresses like a showgirl. She's not being herself up there because she's dancing like a ho. Is she ho? She says she's a virgin. Y'know, it's just not clicking. She's doing one thing and saying another thing, y'know? It's definitely not what I'm going to do." --Avril Lavigne _________________________________________________________________ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Jun 2002 02:11:42 -0400 From: "Lindsay" Subject: [EDA] wanted: specific pic of Jewel Hello all, I'm looking for a specific picture of Jewel. It's decently old, but hopefully many of you have seen it or know where I may be able to find a good, full copy of it (suitable for scanning). Please check out the following link. It shouldn't take much of your time. Thanks for your efforts and any help you may be able to offer. I haven't looked extensively because I've been very busy but I figured this would be the best place to check first. http://www.elevated23.com/wanted_jewel.jpg ~Lindsay~ PS - I was in Wallingford for those of you who were there--the show was great! and if anyone remembers during the encore, Jewel signed my copy of Chasing Down the Dawn. She is so awesome and I can't wait to see her again. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Jun 2002 02:15:56 -0400 From: "Steve Garner" Subject: [EDA] Violet Eyes - help!! i just got back from seeing Jewel's concert in Toronto at Massey Hall... it was absolutely incredible! One of my new favourite songs of hers is now "Violet Eyes"... she played it during her acoustic set and it was beautiful. But I can't find very much info about it on the internet anywhere... and I am dying to hear it again and learn to play it on guitar! So if anyone knows where I can find sound clip(s) of the song and/or the guitar chords, please let me know!! Thanks! (yes Steve, we got lost, so I suppose you are not the most lost person *grin*)* First of all.. to all those living inTO, please please please learn street name.. I mean even the rickshaw drivers didnt know. please learn, teach your friends and family, my friend is scary when we are lost and she is driving. i nearly was injured when she cut off a a mini van to pull over for directions. ok. now on to happier stuff... CONCERT!!!! W00t! very cool. even from my way up high seats (Balcony, row F, but pretty much center) I loved the solo stuff, and T going crazy on bass was hella wicked. very much a ham. I loved the banter. "Ok, who else has presents for me?" and also her intro for Cold Song... if i were to be remembered for just one song, policially, poetically, I hope it would be this one..... very much a giggle song.. all in all. i had an amazing time. Sidebar, M2M was very good but very dry. you can tell they arent used to concerts quiet yet.. not entirely comfy up there. Marion seemed very stiff and Mariet just didnt talk at all. But once they get more stage comfy, they will be absolutely perfect. (with the exception of the volume levels.... it was so loud it just became a din. but that was techincal err not theirs. ) If anyone taped the CBC broadcast i will be your very best friend if i could get a copy. i have nothing to trade except my sisters first born child (soul still intact). *impish grin* Violet eyes was amazing.. definitely my fav of the night.... maybe since it was taped for CBC radio, we can get a decent net version....... or not... btw. i have some very craptastic digi pics from the concert that im going to try to clean up and post later..... I'm not in the mood to write a big review about the show, especially since a couple others have already and I wouldn't have much different to say, but I just have one other thing to ask: was anyone else a little put off by the price of the stuff on sale at the concert? I don't know how the prices actually differed between the Toronto concert (since it's Canadian-vs-American money they might not work out to the same after conversion) but I'm broke as hell, and decided I just wanted something *small* to remember the night by, you know, maybe a sticker or something? and the stickers were **$8**!! That's a little ridiculous for something that might have cost 10 cents to print up! I've never in my life seen stuff that expense at concerts... I mean, after paying over $90 per ticket, you'd think you'd get cut a little break on some merchandise, but the prices were just horrible... just wondering what the prices have been in the states for the same stuff? I was a little disappointed because I really wanted to buy something, and since I couldn't afford a $40 t-shirt, nor did I have that much money on me (and the "boot-leg" t-shirts being sold outside were pretty awful looking IMO) I thought I would at least be able to take home a little something, but *gah* I just felt a little disappointed that they charge so much for stuff... anyways, concert was great other than that! :) ~ Sandy ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Jun 2002 03:45:46 -0400 From: "Sandy" Subject: Re: [EDA] NJC: Avril >>Someone wrote: >>"it's no surprise if anyone 18 or older isn't all that impressed with the >>music - " >I'm 23x and I really like Avril-- I think she's fun, she's no jewel-- but I >really like her cd-- I got Vanessa Carlton's and Avril's on the same day and >I really like Avril's better. they are by far the best young artists that >are out-- we should support young song writers or the next generation will be >full of Britanny's and Christina's. >- Chrissy Well, I don't know if this was intentional or not, but pulling that sentence out from my entire email is really taking it out of context - I was in no way bashing anyone over 18 who likes Avril, or saying that only people under 18 are going to like her, what I was saying was that she was being marketed towards a younger crowd, because she is young and her lyrics are from her life experience and appeal to a younger crowd... I'm in no way not supporting Avril, as I defended her and the fact that we should support younger artists so that they can grow into even better artists are they get older... ~ Sandy ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Jun 2002 04:48:51 EDT From: DixieJewelAngel@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Avril So about Avril..o no wait this is a jewel list thats right!!
