Jewel is on tour right now and we received 4 digests yesterday, mostly about Avril. We switched to digest because we were getting to much e-mail to follow, and now we find ourselves having to scroll through 10 Avril posts for 1 Jewel post....Doesn't that say to anyone else that maybe you should be starting a separate Avril list? As far as Jewel stuff...We saw Jewel Saturday at Jones Beach. It was not her best show. We've seen her twice there and once at PNC (as far as major venues, I think we've seen most of her special shows as well). It seems like she doesn't like playing there. She told very few stories, and seemed to be phoning it in on more than a few songs. Life Uncommon for example was great, but she really had no emotion in it like last tour. On the Spirit tour her show at PNC was amazing, and she seems to love playing there. It's pretty obvious that she only plays Jones Beach because it's on the ampitheater circuit. She sounded fine on most songs, but she really wasn't into it, and for the most part the audience fed off of that, because when she seemed into songs the audience came to life. Last tour she put on a much better show at PNC and from the reviews it seems like she did this time as well. That's unfortunate because she is usually great in concert, and this time she was ok/good. On the plus side, M2M was much better than we expected, although we are not rushing to buy their album. I was just wondering if someone who's already been to one of her concerts this year could answer a couple of questions, this would be best answered by people who attended one of the shows that didn't include the soul city cafe performers... what time did Jewel actually go on, and what time did your ticket say the show started? how long was M2M's set, and what time did they go on? I'm going to be waiting for my boyfriend to finish work to drive me to Toronto, so I'm just wondering what time Jewel will actually be on so I know when to really worry that I might be late :) My ticket says "8PM" but I'm not sure if that's when the doors open, or when M2M is supposed to start.... ~ Sandy ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Jun 2002 15:38:05 -0400 From: "Elizabeth Vickery" Subject: [EDA] solo concerts it's kind of sad that some of the people on the list are still waiting for more solo shows to be announced. come on. we all know that even if there are more shows announced, they will be in california. jewel doesn't do solo tours anywhere else anymore. it pisses me off, but there's nothing i can do about it. i mean, she does live in california. i wish i had the kind of money to go to california to see her solo, but i just feel lucky to have been able to go to 2 shows this past week (by the way, she played boy needs a bike last night! the best song ever!). anyway, sorry to be bitchy, but it's obvious she isn't going to be playing solo for anyone except the lucky californians who get to see her solo even when she isn't on a real tour. oh well. later. ~liz _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Jun 2002 16:17:05 -0500 From: "abbakil" Subject: Re: [EDA] solo concerts I don't think it's being "bitchy" to want to see her solo, but I think we all have to be patient. Jewel can do as she likes, but I'll admit it's a little bit strange that she does play so many solo shows in California. Fortunately, I think this is a temporary situation. Her popularity has declined enough for her to be able to play smaller venues, so I can only imagine that she'll do plenty of solo touring sometime in the future. And all signs are pointing to Jewel slowly going back to her "roots". I mean who could have expected to hear A Boy Needs a Bike or Carnivore on this tour? She clearly hasn't forgotten her longtime fans or the fact that many of those fans love her early unreleased stuff. When she plays an obscure song like Violet Eyes or puts songs like Grey Matter and SIBTW on an album, I feel she's giving her most loyal fans a little gift that only we can truly appreciate. Of course, I may be completely misinterpreting the whole situation. But it makes me wonder why so many people want This Way to sell millions of copies and radio to pick up her next single. Do these people judge the quality of something by how popular it is? We should all be happy that her career is at a point where she's still relatively successful, and yet it's possible for her to do more intimate shows. Would everyone really like to see her in a stadium rather than a club? She may be being marketed a certain way somewhat, but she is also deciding how she looks when they do photo shoots of her (and has turned down certain shoots because they wanted to give her more of a glam look), and she actually had recorded a CD before "Let Go" that was scrapped because *she* didn't like the sound of it, and then travelled from NY to LA to re-do the entire thing! Michelle's The Spirit Room isn't her first CD. Check out her indie label CD. That's her *real* first one. And I don't think Vanessa is really being marketed alot, or at least not anymore than Jewel is. She hasn't done a ton of TV shows, and hasn't been all over the magazines (nor has Avril), and in concert she does sound very much like the CD. That's her sound. The CD isn't glossed over much. And she did write all her songs by herself, no co-writers. She's an excellent piano player too. >Anyone can have a hit on the radio and have millions of teens flocking >to >by her album, but will it last? No. - -------------- Only time can determine this. And just to go on record....I wasn't trying to tell anyone in one of my last posts what to say or not say about artists, I was only reminding everyone of what we were ALL told by the list manager regarding not bashing other artists. That wasn't my idea though. I wish I could bash some as well, I'm sure we all do. But I respect the decision that was made, and would hope all of you others do also. Based on the some of the posts lately though that doesn't seem apparant.
