First of all, don't cover that red lens... I'm pretty sure you're talking about a sensor that measures light conditions for things like flash, shutter speed, etc, as you mentioned... When that light flashes, it's minimal and not something that is likely to disrupt the concert... Now if you're in say the lawn section, or even as close as like the first row of a second set of pavillion seats, your flash isn't going to do you any good - light from your flash only travels a certain distance and if you're past that, it's about useless. Most cameras (35mm) have the ability to just turn the flash off manually (without affecting the other automatic focus and exposure meters), which is what I would recommend. I would assume your Powershot has features like that... but always be sure to consult your owner's manual! (also, check ticketmaster.com for your event/venue, it'll tell you if a camera is allowed) James ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Jun 2002 11:59:12 -0400 From: BPerry05@aol.com Subject: [EDA] I NEED A COPY OF.. My suggestion would be to use a low speed setting with something like 1000 film (if using a regular camera) and take pictures when there is plenty of stage lighting. This has worked great for me. I'll say most flashes don't work much past about 50ft. And even when they do, often times the pictures that look the best are the ones taken without a flash since it tends to "wash out" the image. Kinda sneaky. yes. kinda sly? definitely. but if ya want a concert shot a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do. im bringing 2 cams but leaving one in the very locked car. The sensitive singer-songwriter broke her collarbone and rib in late April and played only a few songs on her trusty acoustic guitar during last night's performance. Although she joked that instead of playing she was going to be ``stunning you with my dance moves,'' Jewel clearly heeded some of her doctor's advice and stayed relatively still. That immobility did nothing to diminish the spirit of either the 28-year-old performer, who gave a full-force vocal performance, or the enthusiasm of the capacity audience whose chorus of sopranos was often heard supporting Jewel's own. The one handicap the Alaska native had to overcome was a mix that favored the skilled but far too loud handiwork of her drummer, who often drowned out the more delicate noodlings of her keyboardist and guitarist and the feathery high end of her singing voice. Jewel wisely favored her latest and most mature album, ``This Way,'' opening with the sultry torch song ``I Won't Walk Away'' and the energetic acoustic rocker ``Standing Still.'' On both numbers she displayed what is both lovely and maddening about her voice. When singing in her husky lows or in her solid middle register Jewel sounded terrific. But when she slid into her itty-bitty wittle girl voice or her braying belt, the results were less attractive. Unfortunately, the majority of songs featured all of those vocal styles, so the breezy fun of `Do You Want to Play'' and the subtly smoky poignancy of ``Hands,'' two of the night's best songs, also featured a few cringe-inducing shifts in style. And so it followed that songs like the melodic folk pop hit ``You Were Meant For Me'' seesawed between stunning and strident. An acoustic set was a nice change of pace and showed the singer in her best light, singing the delicately sensual ``Near You Always'' and the righteous ``Little Sister.'' Deadline obligations necessitated missing the encores but the best song of the night was the ambling rocker ``Down So Long,'' which featured a scorching guitar solo and a rock-solid vocal by Jewel that nailed the song's restless hopefulness. Norwegian pop duo M2M evoked visions of a female Hanson. The teen singer-songwriters played a slightly timid but competent set of pop tunes. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Jun 2002 18:33:25 -0300 From: "FabioJJ" Subject: [EDA] This Way remix Well, I now heard the whole song and can state my opinion. I think it sounds like they wanted really bad to do something radio would play, and it sucks. That initial beat is really out of place and the last chorus is very confusing (a lot of things going on). I also had the impression that it was bad produced, like they didn't put any effort on doing something nice. I thing the album version is better because it suits the song better (more sweet), but this remix has more commercial appealing. So let's hope it does well... Then when she has that beautiful Gloria/Angel Standing Still voice, you see that she can have different styles. First off let me tell you my total bad luck with seeing Jewel. Last time she came to Pittsburg for her Spirit tour I wasn't able to go because I had cheerleading tryouts and it was so upsetting. Then I was given a second chance and was invited to Nashville only to find out the day before that I could go. This time.... my friend from New York (she goes to college with me though in WV) was going to drive down to see Jewel this Saturday in Pittsburg and she was just going to stay the entire week with me. Well she calls me last night and tells me that she won't be able to go afterall.... Tear!!!! Luckily she already paid for her ticket and I have both tickets- so I'm not out money or an extra ticket or anything superbad. The only thing is none of my other friends are really into Jewel. The only ones who are have to work and can't call off cause it's too late of a notice. I have one friend who likes Jewel who is a possibility, but she is out of town and won't be back until tomorrow. I'm sure I can find someone to come with me- cause who would turn down a free concert, but this will be my first time seeing Jewel and I wanted it to be special. (lol, I think I care more about my 1st Jewel concert being special than I was with my virginity). I really wanted to go with someone who loves Jewel as much as I do, but I guess I will have to settle. Man, now that I think about it this seems like a great big sex analogy, lol... sorry. Alright just thought I would bitch- thanks for reading!!! xoxo ashley staggers the Pi Beta Phi Angel ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Jun 2002 03:59:16 +0000 From: "Amy Emerman" Subject: [EDA] acoustic cafe You can listen to an old Jewel Acoustic Cafe taping at http://www.mlive.com/cafe/ You can also check out recent performances from Patty Griffin, Lucy Kaplansky and others... I was bummed...had I known, I would have been there! Oh, well...what are ya gonna do? Incidentally, he got the tickets free from a guy who takes tennis lessons from him who happens to be in sales at Atlantic...he also had free tickets to the Carnegie Hall benefit not long ago and had gotten a free Jewel CD from him.... dang, maybe I should give tennis lessons or something... _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V7 #288 ***************************
