Greetings folks- Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Mary from (near) Daytona Beach Fl. and this is my first post to this list so please forgive me if I screw it up somehow. ;-( My husband and I saw Jewel June 16th at the Hard Rock Cafe Olrando and were very impressed with her amazing talent which has prompted me to join this mailing list. I have on order a 1st gen vhs from 6/15 Ft. Lauderdale so hopefully I will have some "Angelfood" to speak of from this tour soon. I wanted to pass along my amateur review of the show I saw in case anyone was interested. Please bare in mind that I'm no pro and I don't remember all the details due to a few beers in the Hard Rock Cafe before the show. ;-) Here we go: Jewel- Hard Rock Orlando June 16th 2002 The crowd was mixed from the very young to some very mature fans. Since it was Father's Day there was what appeared to be quite a few daughters who brought their dads. Security was very laxed, could have easily slipped a dat or MD recorder in but chose to just enjoy the show rather than worry about setting mic levels and capturing the performance. M2M opened with some love songs about lost love and ex-boyfriends who wouldn't leave them alone. Cute girls with some nice vocal talent but were plagued with in-house wiring problems which became quite distracting. Thankfully they were only onstage for 20-25 minutes. House lights go down about 8:55 as the roadies rush around backstage making final adjustments. The Hard Rock didn't look completely sold out but most of the reserved seating and GA floor were packed. Jewel appears opening with I Won't Walk Away. She looked great in her tight blue jeans with black and red overlapping studded belts. She had a cute white top on with some gold print. Appeared to be the same set-list as Tampa. She explained that she had a broken collar-bone and rib and couldn't play guitar as usual. She said normally she would look real cool like Courtney Love. (jokingly) Audience did quite well singing along to the songs, Jewel seemed impressed and at times would let the fans finish the verse while she remained quiet. The acoustic set was quite good although there were a could sour notes as you could hear the muffled twang of the string from time to time. She explained that she couldn't move her shoulder due to her collar-bone but she would do her best to finger-pick. She asked us not to tell her doctor so she didn't get in trouble cuz she wasn't even supposed to be doing that. Some nice solos from her band, Jewel commented this is the best touring band she's ever had. Her bassist was phenominal. At the start of Who Will Save Your Soul Jewel took a seat on the edge of the stage while her bassist broke out some funky jams and made his way over to her side of the stage and jammed next to her to the roar of the crowd and with a big smile on Jewels face. During the acoustic set someone handed Jewel (from the audience) her book of poems and she read one from it "shussing" the ecstatic crowd. She then signed the photo that was handed in the book. Also after one song a little girl had a rose in the front row and was desperately trying to get Jewel's attention with the help of her father. He lifted his daughter up and she presented her with the rose. Jewel seemed genuinely touched and leaned over to give the girl a kiss on the head. Touching moment. All in all a very enjoyable performance with Jewel playing for almost 2 hours. (We left the Hard Rock at 11:00 pm). During the show there were some pro- photographers moving about the venue. One with a pro-cam-corder and one with a still shot camera. Jewel commented how much better it was than the previous night in Ft. Lauderdale. 4 encores! Hopefully she will return to O'town next time around. Catch her if you can, her talent is endless. I've never heard someone with so much vocal range. She's great when she's singing in a whisper and great when she's belting out at the top of her capacity. Great show, beautiful girl, amazing talent. Worth every penny! Also, here is a pro-review of the Tampa gig from the local rag: St. Petersburg Times June 15, 2002 TAMPA -- Alaskan folk star Jewel kicked off the American leg of her This Way tour Friday at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, thrilling a near sellout crowd of 2,500 with more than 90 minutes of her intensely personal, poetic reflections on life. Having broken her collarbone and a rib in April, Jewel relied on her backing band to provide the music for most of her set, focusing her energy on soaring vocals that entranced the audience. She played several songs from her latest CD, including the hit Standing Still and the skewering Jesus Loves Me. Jewel also reached back for the crowd pleasers Foolish Games and You Were Meant For Me, which became a sing-along, as well as more than a dozen other tunes. Band members Mark Oakley and Stuart Mathis on guitar, T-Bone Hannon on bass, Steve George on keyboards and Trey Gray on drums skillfully bolstered Jewel's performance, never getting in the way. Perhaps most pleasing, though, was when she shooed the band away for a 30-minute acoustic set for which Jewel slung a guitar around her neck and played. When she could remember the songs, that is. She trotted out one number, only to toss it aside remarking that she did not recall how it went. "Okay, we're not doing that one," Jewel said with a laugh, quickly moving on. Out came a silly polka in which she sang, "When your nose is running, it's a perfect time for kissing and hugging. Do you want to catch a cold with me?" Next was the gorgeous ballad Grey Matter, followed by a remembrance of a friend she said had died of cancer. The band returned to close out the show with Jewel, whose voice was in fine form. She ranged from coquettish, getting guys to scream as she sang, "Do you want to play?" to a belt in several songs that would have made Janis Joplin proud. She only looked uncomfortable in that she seemed not to know what to do with her hands when she did not have a guitar in them. But Jewel bantered with the crowd, and they loved her back. A couple of fans shouted so much that at one point she urged them to shut up so she could play. The rest of the audience burst into applause. Jewel released This Way in late 2001, and then toured Asia and Europe before heading back to the states. She plays Fort Lauderdale tonight and Orlando on Sunday, with her 40-date tour ending in September in California. The Norwegian teen duo M2M opened with a 25-minute set of mainstream pop about absent boyfriends and bad days. Impressively, the girls, Marit Larsen and Marion Ravn, wrote many of their lyrics. At first clearly apprehensive, they seemed to warm to the crowd toward the end of the performance. Larsen, the primary singer of the two, had a powerful if sometimes breathy voice that could take her places. - ------------- Hope I haven't stepped out of line with this post and apologies for the length. I'm looking for a nice dat or MD source from any of the recent shows. I can burn CDR or clone MD as well as copy vhs with an S-Vhs machine. Would love to set up a trade for a recording of the current tour.
