All I know for 100% certainty is that she is not riding a horse from show to show. ;-) Seriously though, I would imagine she and some of her entourage probably fly the longer distances and then bus around when there's a lot of shows in the regional area (like when she's in the northeast). Mike ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Jun 2002 10:28:45 EDT From: Mc1Starr2000@aol.com Subject: [EDA] NJC: My Avril Review I have heard so many great things about Avril Lavigne that I decided to buy her CD. I sort of like "Complicated" or I at least like the chorus. I was disappointed when I got the album though. I don't mean to put her or her music down at all, but to me, many of the songs sound the same. And none of them have a very original sound, but are more like a mixture of styles from other artists. I got bored listening to the album. I usually prefer to listen to older or more mature artists, I guess, and I don't really like Avril's lyrics. Her voice, although original, isn't anything special, in my opinion and her songs aren't that extraordinary either. There are a few that I like, but it's not a CD that I really enjoy listening to. I'm only sending this because there have been so many good reviews and I don't know if everyone will like it as much as some of you do. Maybe I need to listen to the CD more. Usually, it takes a while for me to really love something. But, I find Avril a little boring, particularly her lyrics, and she doesn't seem like anything new or original. Sorry to put her down because I know that different artists speak to different people and if you do enjoy her music, then that's great. This was just my opinion. - -Tanya ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Jun 2002 10:08:50 -0500 From: "Leigh Holleschau" Subject: Re: [EDA] Re: This Way There does seem to be some indication that she wasn't very fond of the song. From the liner notes on the album, regarding the song: "This was the hardest song to record. I hated doing it. But then again, I felt the same way when I recorded 'You Were Meant for Me,' so I'm not always the best judge." Since it's not a technically difficult song, saying it was hard to record might be assumed to mean that she didn't really care for the song, or was just not "into" it. And when she say she's not always the best judge, it would seem to indicate that she sometimes defers to someone else's judgement as to what to record. This sort of feeling is certainly not unprecedented. Patsy Cline was very dubious about recording "Crazy." and it went on to become perhaps her biggest hit. The difference there, of course, is that she did not write the song, but I think there is something of the same principle at work. I have written some music myself, and there have been a few times when I have written something that I was dissatisfied with and therefore didn't care for much, and then later was convinced by someone else that it was worthwhile. And I'll ask this once again...has ANYone been able to get her to play a request *that she wasn't already going to play anyway*. I'm trying to see if it's even worth my time or not to make a lyric sheet and request a song for her...something I KNOW she hasn't played in ages (like "Don't", for example, or "Daddy"). But if she isn't doing this, or at least hasn't yet, then the chances are she won't throughout the rest of the tour either. I mean, 5 or 6 shows is more than enough time to take a request and play it if that's something was was willing to do. So anyone? Has she done this? Also, has anyone gotten to meet her either before or after the shows? If so, what was she like? Nice, mean, friendly, grumpy, bitchy, lovely? Jewel kicked off her tour last weekend, but she's still suffering the effects of injuries sustained when she was bucked off a horse. She suffered damage to her rib and collarbone, but she told us that she's slowly getting back into the swing of playing her guitar. "I'm playing some guitar. I do a solo set in the middle. I'll start playing electric here pretty soon." We also asked how the injury has affected her stage presence. "Yeah, I can't move as much. Having a broken rib is hard to sing with because you breathe so much. Um, but I'm getting around it. I probably move a little less, but that's about it." She added that she should be up to full speed for the latter dates of her summer tour. "It takes about 12 weeks to get better, and I'm six weeks into it." Jewel is scheduled to play the PNC Bank Arts Center in New Jersey on Friday (June 21) and the Jones Beach Amphitheater on Saturday (June 22). _________________________________________________________________ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Jun 2002 14:30:43 EDT From: JewelWilcher@aol.com Subject: Re: [EDA] THIS WAY I LOVE "THIS WAY". I think the simplicity of "This Way" is no less "Jewel-esque" than "Cold Song." There's nothing wrong with sweet and cute. As far as Jewel playing it at shows or not, I think Jewel doesn't worry all that much about that stuff anymore. I think she just plays what she feels like each night instead of worrying too much about formalities. Of course, I don't really know, that's just my opinion. When I first heard her CD I didn't like it "as much" as I did after the 3rd or 4th time, so yes, maybe it just needs to grow on you some. :-) As for the lyrics, she's 17. So it's not going to be Shakespeare or Dylan. She writes about things 17 year old girls would or maybe have experienced. I think she's staying true to herself and the age group she represents by doing this. I can't stand listening to artists who are 16-18 and try to write like they're 40 when they haven't experienced enough to do that. Her sound, while a bit produced, I feel is quite original in it's diversity. I don't believe the songs all sound the same, other than maybe a couple here, and a couple there...somewhat. Then again, all of Jewel's songs sound the same too to some degree. I mean, with most CD's, you hear the same voice on all the tracks, hear the same, or similar production through each song, and the writing is coming from the same person on each track, for the most part. So of course there's always going to be some "sameness" amongst the songs. But of the 13 songs on her CD, 2 are pretty rockin songs, 1 is borderline punk rock, 3 or 4 are straight up hard drivin pop songs with GREAT hooks, 3 or 4 others are more like ballads, more mellow sounding. And one even includes some rap. Another sounds closer to a country song in ways. So there is quite alot of diversity on the CD whether everyone hears it or not...thus the reason she's doing so well on the charts and IS getting such great reviews, as you stated. But of course not *everyone* is going to like her, just like not everyone likes all artists. That would be a perfect world, and this is far from that. However, of all my friends and family and e-mail buddies (both on and off the list) whom I've told to get the CD thinking they'd like it, have ALL told me they LOVE it! 3 or 4 are EDA's as well. :-) So I'm glad I could pass the word on and spread her greatness to others....even if not everyone can see that in her. She'll be around a long time. Her voice will carry her a long ways. I don't expect her next CD to sound exactly like this one, aside from the fact she'll be older of course. Cause her voice is capable alot and she could sing pretty much any style of music she wishes. It's one of the strongest voices I've heard in a long time. Christina Aguilera has a good voice too, but it's just different. Avril's is more soothing sounding, yet firm and strong when it needs to be and she doesn't use all the vibrato Christina does at times. So I really like it alot. So thanks for your comments...if it weren't for people like you, the world would be rather boring, us all thinking alike and acting alike I mean...haha.
