First, a few words of introduction. I was on this list (and pretty active to boot!) back c. the 1996-97 school year, but haven't been on since because, frankly, I lost interest in the sort of product being purveyed by the Jewel(tm) Inc. Empire (sold my copy of 'Spirit;' didn't even bother to buy the 2 most recent albums, only kept my PoY CD 'cause its autographed (though I'll still keep my LP copy regardless)). However, last weekend on a whim (and inspired by a long car-drive) I dusted off and listened to the Innerchange Days tapes and was reminded of what 5 years of pop-star-dom had caused me to forget. So, looking around the old digs I don't see too many familiar names -- Mike Connell, MrBB (though I remember him by his real name!) -- and the FAQ looks remarkably un-updated from back in '96, but I've still got a couple of questions, and am hoping someone (listmom Mike?) can maybe help me out: 1) Was the 4th Jewelstock tape ever released/treed? 1a) If so, is it possible I could still get a copy from someone? If you want some kind of proof that I was an original recepient I should be willing/able to provide it... 1b) If not, for Chr*st's sake why not? 2) The music on the Innerchange Days tapes is so damn good, but the sound quality is crappy (especially on mine -- I wore my first copy out and had to re-dub onto a replacement set) -- is there any slight one-in-a-million chance that Jewel(tm) Inc. will ever authorize and/or produce a cleaned-up professional CD issue of these recordings? 35 songs @ ~135min. would be a perfect 2 CD set -- include some archival photos, a set of new liner notes from Jewel, and watch the money pour in. Surely she's already made enough money for Atlantic (~20 million units sold?) that they'd let her release a 'vanity' project like this, and even if they don't, it could easily be an independent release -- many artists with pockets nowehere near as deep as Jewel have self-funded independent albums (off the top of my head: Lori Carson, Richard Thompson, Mary Lou Lord, Neko Case, et many al). These recordings show a side of Jewel that's nowehere in evidence on ANY of her to-date official releases (including PoY) and I think they deserve to be heard by more than just a handful of well-connected die-hards. 2b) if not, are there by any chance any engineer-inclined fans who can/would/(maybe-already-have?) do this themselves, on the sly, for distribution as a dreaded b**tl*g? Audiotape (especially audiotape with audible hiss and distortion) is obsolete; I'd REALLY like to upgrade these. And that's all. Don't mean to offend anybody or stir up old done-to-death business but I've been away for awhile, can't seem to locate answers to either of these (without a LONG search through the list archives which I'm not willing to do), and am hoping someone can help me out. Maybe it is....who knows. Oh! My friend is in this movie....his name is Eli Brumfield, an aspiring actor. He's a bus-driver in the movie. So if you see a dude w/ glasses, start clappin' for his oscar-worthy performance. lol. -John ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Apr 2002 20:38:30 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: Re: [EDA] Re: Jewel Kilcher Trent from days gone-by wrote: > and the FAQ looks remarkably un-updated from back in '96, Yeah...I be guilty on that one. The "welcome to" message hasn't had too many updates this century and the "real" FAQ doesn't even really exist anymore, just e-copies here and there and maybe even the ol' Jewel-FAQ auto-responder we had set up in 1998 or so. That is a MAJOR pain in the cooley to have e-updated so I haven't bothered. (note to self - have Jeff W remove the jewel-faq auto-responder) >but I've still got a couple of questions, and am hoping someone (listmom >Mike?) can maybe help me out: Ahem! Call me listdad, listpop or listdude if anything. :-) >1) Was the 4th Jewelstock tape ever released/treed? No. There was one major stipulation as to when it could be treed, that being "once the new CD came out". Back then the "new CD" was the (since) never released Fritz Creek Store. The release of Spirit could not and did not count. (i.e. reading between the lines, they did not want the 4th JewelStock tapes' material out there until after the same songs were released on Fritz Creek Store....Carnivore, Fading Away, Satelite were highly expected to be on Fritz). Also, to be honest, even IF Fritz Creek Store had been released with Carnivore, Fading Away and Satelite on it, I highly doubt we would have had permission to tree the tapes due to behind-the-scenes pressure from Atlantic Records and other suits. They weren't too happy about the 3 tape JewelStock set being treed as it is, so we should thank our lucky stars THAT didn't fall under the corporate bulldozer. The last time the topic came up between myself and the J-team I could tell that JewelStock tape #4 will "never" be treed. >1a) If so, is it possible I could still get a copy from someone? If you >want some kind of proof that I was an original recepient I should be >willing/able to provide it... Believe it or not, I still have all the info/emails from the JewelStock tree, including leaf requests etc. Everything. Heck, it's only 1's and 0's on a metallic plate. That don't take up much room :-) >2) The music on the Innerchange Days tapes is so damn good, but the sound >quality is crappy (especially on mine -- I wore my first copy out and had >to re-dub onto a replacement set) -- is there any slight one-in-a-million >chance that Jewel(tm) Inc. will ever authorize and/or produce a cleaned-up >professional CD issue of these recordings? Not too long ago...maybe a shade over three years ago, such a "clean up" of the Innerchange Days tapes was getting done behind-the-scenes to be re-treed on the list in cassette tape format only, but the project was shut-down for basically the same ol' reason we could not tree JewelStock tape #4 during the original tree...bootleggers etc. (true bootleggers...the professional ones). There were other reasons too, but the #1 reason was the bootleggers. Having said that, as the years roll on, nothing would surprise me as to what the J-team and their record label might release from the archives. I just hope I'm not in a rocking chair being spoon-fed when the day comes that cleaned up CDs of Innerchange material is released. Or at least just provide the seed, and have someone else deal with it. The key being it'd need to be away from this list somehow, since this list seems to be pretty tied up with these label people. I've been involved with a lot of crowes, zeppelin, floyd trees, etc. It's a pretty common undertaking. I'm in no way advocating bootlegging or anything illegal. Just people being able to get decent sounding copies of this music. _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Apr 2002 22:25:29 EDT From: Rasputina11@aol.com Subject: Re: [EDA] Innerchange Tree I agree with TexasPete (Allan Ray). I think people should have access to all of her recordings. In earlier years, Jewel herself didn't mind people recording at the shows. A live recording is sometimes the only way to capture an improv that the artist will do only once right then and there. The Greatful Dead used to encourage live taping. Phish, and Dave Matthews Band still do. ~Sasha~ The angel who received her ticket in the mail today for the June 14th, Tampa show ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Apr 2002 22:29:55 EDT From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: [EDA] vote for Break Me on MMM Top 5 Hey Guys If you could vote for Break Me on the MuchMoreMusic Top 5, that'd be great. She and her people do not owe us anything, and if we want to have anything like Nashbash, jewel stock, future tape trees, then we all need to just back away from the Jstock four tape. There will never be another official tree, and going forth with a bootleg tree on this list will effectively destroy our battered relations with the J-Team, get us under intense scrutiny of by the music nazi police, and pretty much flush this list down the toilet.( The water is already starting to swirl) Sure, it would be cool if this was 95, and we could tape any of the shows, and trade them on the list, Sure it would be very easy to break oath with the Jteam and make a tree of these tapes. But at what price? I cannot tell or force anyone to do or not do anything, but if ya'll continue talking of this tree it will just be pissing away what little good that remains in the EDAs. If you just have to have these tapes, there are still people around that have almost mint copies of the first three, and would prolly make a copy or two. That is allowed, and solves almost all of the problems. bah, just my couple of cents, Rowdy PS, who remembers going to the Jewel-Audio Only site to listen to shity Real Audio angelfood, and was glad to have even that? ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V7 #172 ***************************
