Someone, maybe it was even me, recently posted an article here how the record companies are releasing less and less singles in North America for the simple reason that they are not bringing in enough of the almighty $ to make the effort worthwhile to them. I know a there are a bunch of Michelle Branch fans out on here, so I thought these 2 Singers would be up your ally. (The die hard Jewel fans might also dig it) First off.. Vanessa Carlton- Think Michelle Branch meets Chantel Kreviazuk, with a dash of Tori and Alicia Keys.. Current single 1000 Miles. I recommend Ordinary Day. And.. Avril Lavigne- A punkier version of Michelle Branch. She seems very transitional between pop and punk with a bit of a folk/rock flare thrown in to the mix. Current Single - Complicated. I recommend Anything But Ordinary. Jewel has released some awful videos in her career that look like they cost far too much money to make, when her best videos were the ones that showed jewel as she is- YWMFM and WWSYS- and they actually went with the song. That video for break me has nothing to do with the lyrics whatsoever, it's still confusing me. Pointless effects, pointless symbolism, pointless video. I still don't understand what they were going for. Whatever it was, they failed. Dont get me wrong, I love that song and I love Jewel, but I cant blindly like something thats bad just because her name is on it. I love new and artistic videos that are different, but that video just missed the target entirely. This song is basically limping it's way to an early death on US radio. Unless radio programmers just wake up one day and suddenly say "wow.. that new Jewel song deserves some airplay", we are the ONLY way this song is ever going to be anything more than a complete and total disaster of a flop. Literally, her worst performing single ever... perhaps 2nd to What's Simple is True. But this is the 2nd single off This Way, not the 4th.... so.... if it flops that's a BAD BAD thing. Here are some facts: It has debuted on the Modern Adult and Adult Top 40 Billboard Charts, but hasn't hit the Top 30 yet (Standing Still DEBUTED at #23 on the Adult Top 40 Chart). It hasn't debuted on the Mainstream Top 40 Chart yet, and hasn't even come close to hitting the Hot 100. It's only being played on about 55 of the 90 Hot AC stations, and 35 of the 120 Mainstream Stations. It's gaining at less than 50 spins a week on every format... which is literally disasterous, considering it's such a new single. So basically... REQUEST THE SONG. A really easy way to request is using this website: http://radiofinderizer.net/cgi-bin/radio.cgi?artistid=artist243 It takes like 2 minutes and you can request in all states and all over the place. It's very very simple. This song COULD be successful... it just needs to catch on. It's a tough sell, and so far Atlantic don't seem to be selling.. so it's up to Jewel's fans. I'm actually VERY surprised that Atlantic are releasing Break Me as a worldwide second single, considering how badly it's doing in the States. I mean if it isn't doing well in the States, I shudder to think how it will do in most international markets. I think they should give it another month or so, and if nothing happens just wash their hands of it and go on the the 3rd single.. which SHOULD be Do You Want To Play... but will probably be This Way. Steve ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Apr 2002 16:31:31 -0500 From: Amber Subject: [EDA] Break Me opinion I think it's good in it's own way. Each of her videos have a different feel to them. Of course if I had to pick my all time favorite, it would probably be YWMFM simply because that was the song that first got me into Jewel. I was at a time in my life when I sat around depressed and watched VH1 and MTV all day and found lines from songs that I related to. And I think I probably saw that video at least 5 times a day and then bought the album and listened to it over and over....and over. So yeah, that would be my favorite for that reason alone. But "Break Me" is still good in it's own way, it's just not simple enough to be a "classic". I guess "what's simple is true". ;-) Amber Dawn Reed singer/songwriter http://www.amberreed.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Apr 2002 19:21:02 +0200 From: "michiel van gorkum" Subject: [EDA] Jewel new concert DATE america hello Jewelfans, I just found out that another accoustic concert will be held in California in September in America.. That is the 15th of september. the venue name is Performing Arts Center San Luis Obispo - Christopher Cohan Center so this means i go to 25 concerts of jewel in 2002... 9 accoustic concerts in america in september 12 band concerts in europe in may and i have seen already 4 band this way promoconcerts with jewel! tickets go on sale on tickets.com tonight for san luis obispo! bye michiel ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Apr 2002 18:32:19 -0400 From: "Sandy" Subject: [EDA] Break Me Video Okay, as simple as can be said, this is what I think: The video and the song do not go together. I understand that whole "bigger love" concept, but I don't think it was right for this song/video. I think the video itself, song aside, is good...at least somewhat visually interesting. and I love the song. So, basically, what I believe is that they could have made a better video to suit this song, and that a different song with the same videography could be made into a good video...they just don't belong together. I really think they could have made an *amazing* video for Break Me if they had stuck more to the actual concept of the song rather than the "bigger love" concept in the video. As for the "it doesn't look real at all" stuff... can we morph in real life? no. so of course it somewhat lacks reality... they actually did a pretty good with the morphing IMO...there are a few parts they really could have touched up that didn't look all that great, but for the most part, I think the morphing was done fairly well....I don't think you can ask for it to look 100% realistic, when it's not realistic for us to see someone morph :) ~ Sandy ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Apr 2002 19:43:04 -0300 From: "FabioJJ" Subject: Re: [EDA] Break Me - big trouble I really would like to know why they changed the single. "This Way" had, hmmm, 90% of chance of being a hit. Although I don't like the song, it's a good seller. But then, suddenly, they decide BREAK ME! The slowest song of the CD! Weird or not, it was a bad choice, of course. I like the remix, I think it could be a hit but radios are NOT into slow songs at all! Well, I'm taking mostly Brazilian radios. They're all into dance right now, which sucks. I think the only ballad I've heard in a long time on radio was Destiny's Child "Emotion". They will never play Break Me... (at least they're starting to play SS!) I think Atlantic's people are not that bad. Sometimes they seem to want only to sell and sell. Other times, like now (releasing Break Me), they do what the artist want (I believe that Jewel was the one who wanted Break me to be released). I am pretty sure that the 3rd single will be chosen by Atlantic on its own, mainly. I don't know why, but I think Jewel made kinda an agreement with Atlantic, saying that she wanted Break Me, but if it flops, then she'll release, say, This Way. Am I losing it or what?
