It is an absolutely painful video to watch. It has nothing to say and is, in fact, at some points, laughably bad. The part where Jewel has the army helmet on, I almost fell off my couch. Things that are unintentionally funny are not good. I don't know where to begin critiquing this debacle so I'll just sum up some of my gripes. The concept is ludicrous, even stupider than the Hands video. Jewel morphing into all sorts of people? What is this, a Michael Jackson video from the mid-90s? And speaking of morphing, with all the money they prob'ly shelled out for this disaster they could have made about 20 good videos or even or or two good independent films! Yet, even after all the high budget special effects it still doesn't look remotely good or real, at all! And please don't misinterpret me, I don't dislike it because it's weird or strange or different(I actually don't think it's any of those things), I dislike it simply because it's bad, real bad, god awful actually. So, while I was quick to praise how well the recent ticketing system did, I am equally quick to jump all over this nonsense being passed off as a video. Note, when they showed the video on the VH1 Fresh thing, they did a quick little videography before it, showing clips from all of Jewel's previous videos. Now, call me crazy, but the videos for Who Will Save Your Soul and You Were Meant For Me stood well above the crowd, the rest being trite, overproduced, badly directed, uncreative crap for the most part. I have to say, "for the most part," because Down So Long is pretty cool, as is Standing Still. Stuff like Foolish Games, Hands, Jupiter, Simple is True though; my god they're bad. Now, I know a lot of groups and artists make bad, predictable, pointless videos. A lot of people don't know how to use the form. That's why people like Spike Jonze and David Fincher stand out so much(and go on to do quality film work). So, hopefully Jewel's next foray into the form of music video will be more productive than this lackluster effort. Those first two videos(regardless of my opinions of the songs) were actually pretty cool. And Jewel looked a lot better in them as well. Much plainer and and prettier.
