I just found out that Jewel will be at this radio music festival thingie later on ... April 27th. And it's the Star 98.7 radio staion in Los Angeles. It's gonna be awesome. The artists include (so far) Jewel, Sheryl Crow, John Mayer, Goo Goo Dolls, and Five for Fighting. I sooo want to go. As well as singing regular concert sets, they will also do little acoustic (they call it Star Lounge) performances and have meet and greets! This'll be great if I can go. I mean, this will be a legit way to meet her. She can't say we're crowding her because there will be a tent and stuff and she's gonna do it like the others. I'm excited. The only prob is, it's the weekend before my finals. Bummer. But I think I'll buy tickets and then see what happens when it gets close to the time. This is the kind of legitimacy I'm talking about when I criticize Jewel's pop side, her begging to be played on Top 40 radio, Atlantic's marketing of Jewel to young teens and pre-teens, etc etc etc. Acoustic Guitar magazine is a legitimate music industry publication that interviews legitimate artists, not just commodities or half-talented one hit wonders. It's nice to see Jewel recognized by the legitimate music world and without cynicism. Most in-the-know music people are a little too interested in being hip, more so than in appreciating good music. If something is remotely popular the indier-than-thou crowd is quick to dis, and Jewel is often the brunt of jokes and cynicism. Again, a lot of times she deserves it for releasing cheesy songs, or appealing to teeny-boppers, but usually her music is pretty solid and those who bash her are just trying to be cool and have heard very little of her music. I'm all for The White Stripes and The Strokes and Basement Jaxx and Ryan Adams, or whoever is hip these days, those are all good, legitimate artists. Some I really like personally, some I recognize their talent but am not all that personally enthused. But popularity isn't always opposed to quality. Jewel is a case where someone who has become popular still has a lot of talent, even if she's sold out a bit. So again, just wanted to point to the Acoustic Guitar article as an example of the kind of music journalism that I think Jewel deserves, but which her image is sometimes contradictory to these days.
