I met Jewel before the show, took a beautiful picture. She was really nice. the show : she played first with the band. and then solo, Michiel was invited on stage again (like in London two days before) to hold the lyrics book he made for Jewel. She sang A Boy Needs a Bike, reading the book upon Michiel's shoulder. that was really funny. she didn't play any new songs. some songs from POY, Hands, a lot of This Way of course and old tunes like Cold Song or Everything Breaks. she couldn't remember the words for Grey Matter, so she she just sang the first 3 lines :-) then the band came back. played Life Uncommon, this way rockish songs and Who Will Save Your Soul, another great new version :-) i really like the band...i think they will rock on the new tour !!! talk to you soon Emilie htpp://www.multimania.com/stevepoltz ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Mar 2002 19:11:48 +0100 From: Francois Cartegnie Subject: [EDA] Amsterdam Review [WARNING LONG POST] Well, I think I'm late to post this review of last week concert, but anyway, let's go : (Don't matter of my poor english) You can alway fell the windy cold and rainy sky of amsterdam, especially when you turn around the concert hall, seeking EDAs and waiting for jewel and the band to enter or exit the venue. (http://fcartegnie.free.fr/jewel/amsterdam/DCP01122.JPG) Well it was quite a surprise when I saw the 'Stage Truck' that Jewel used to work with (I mean, the team that jewel used to work with, not she's driving this truck, even if I would see this ;) ) on the back of the venue. After waiting for more than 4 hours, I finally saw my first EDA. Question: How do you recronize a jewel fan, when he's not wearing any of the EDA's T-shirts or JMerch T-shirts ? Well, it's quite easy : He just turns around the concert hall, inspects entrances and trucks ... :) After seeing him walking around, I talked him in english, but as he didn't seems to feel confortable with this, I started to talk french, especially because he was holding a bag with the name of a french store which couldn't be in amsterdam... So I met a french fan (what a surprise in a foreign country), named Pascal which was going to his 1st Jewel concert, and we discussed for 5 mins, then he left. Half an hour later, I saw another French EDA, but which was supposed to be there, so no real surprise, Emily, which has just arrived in amsterdam. We waited 30 mins, then a silver and black van arrived. At this moment, you just search in your pockets for pens and cameras, because you know jewel might be in this one. But no, this was just only the band. As they were getting off the van, I said hello, more than once, then finally, the bass player T-bone paid attention to us and then I made him sign my this way inlay, as I used to do on the 1999's tour. Emily started to talk him more, and he recronized her when she told that she was at humprey's. He was a bit surprised to meet her again in amsterdam after meeting her in USA. They he left, they were short on time (as they always say, even when leaving ;) but it can be easily understood). Then, 10 minutes later, the lastest silver Mercedes car came in, and it was no hesitation, because it was Jewel. readying again our cameras and pens. Her manager get out of the car, and as we were getting near, I stopped for 1 second, believing I was wrong, because the girl with the hat wasn't Jewel. Well I need glasses ! Emily recronized her perfectly and asked her 3 times. Then Jewel stoppedand finally signed our CDs... and my special 'A night without armour' which had became 'A night without guiness' with steve poltz face... This was a bet that she was never looking was she was signing, but I was wrong. She noticed it wasn't her book, but she signed the cover anyway, saying a 'oh steve poltz.... verry funny' (which would be a wonderful sentence to my ears if I was not suspecting her to be ironical... but seems she was not this time). Then emily asked for a picture... well, I did not though after the 1999's tour (that's a long story) that jewel would let us make a picture, but she did... and she made the most wonderful smile I would expect from her ! (Look emily's shot http://fcartegnie.free.fr/jewel/amsterdam/jewelamsterdam.jpg) Damn, I was camera in hand, but I did not take a pic... Maybe because she had given so much time that I was thinking that she would take another with us... but she left ... I just had time to ask if she had seen Michiel (the dutch fan which was supposed to be there 90min earlier) around ... I needed to precise 'the guy your get on stage in london', then she said 'oh, no'. I was with my camera ready, and only emily got her picture... damn.... Well, as no one would now enter the building, we decided to go in front of the concert hall, to see if we could see the other's EDAs we were waiting for ... even wondering if they have could finally travel from London to amsterdam this day. (Which was frightening us, as Michiel's got our concert tickets !) Then in the hall, in small group a people, a guy said my name... I realized that I haven't recronized everyone as fast as they did : it was michiel, the biggest dutch (only dutch or european ?) fan. Chris groves, the most jewel news aware fan around, was there too. I was really happy to meet my one-day friends of 1999's. Then we listened for a small moment the Sound Check across the doors, and they decided to go at the artists entrance, to see jewel leaving... After discussing a moment, jewel came out (We could have listened the full sound check , as jewel was singing and were not leaving so , but...) and they got their autographs, as I was trying to get my answer to a question from her manager. 'Whom choosen to make the france inter radio show last friday ?' (The show was definitively not Jewel's public.... we couldn't believe that she has done such a show) Then he did not really answer, maybe because I can't talk english really well, especially when I need to make it fast ;) . He just told me it was on france inter... which, you guess, wasn't the answer. They get in the car, then left. (http://fcartegnie.free.fr/jewel/amsterdam/DCP01124.JPG) Notice how she's dressed. Well, it was now late and we decided to go to a restaurant before the concert, and we found a mexican one. After a good meal, long discuss, some pics, and written some Cards I brought, we headed again to the concert hall. There were alredy a lot of people waiting and the Offical JMerch stuff was near to be on sale as they were installing it. After a drink, we were finally allowed to get in the concert room, with the good surprise that Michiel gave me 2nd row ticket. I've never been that near before. Emily was looking at a blonde girl, hidden on stage, which she told me to be Jewel... I supposed it was not, because I couldn't see her 'special' nose... Finally it was Kirstin, the Dutch singer which made the support for jewel. Then, Jewel 's concert started... but the guitar player maybe got most of the applauses as he was getting on his chair with his broken leg. The show was as usual: Band/solo/band encore solo. The sound was really good, as usual, they got the best sound engeneerer around ;) Jewel got me on my knees when I heard the quite new version of life uncommon. Too much songs in fact to remember. The solo set was really nice, because she sang a song I finally heard live 'Little sister'. Then she asked what we would like to hear, and after shouting a lot, Boy's needs a bike name came out. As she didn't remembers the song, we pointed out michiel, with his lyric book... (I was almost sure that Jewel wouldn't let him going again on stage, such luck never happens twice) and she get michiel on stage... The longer michiel was on stage, the longer his face was getting wet.. :) His foots were shaking as jewel was kidding him about typographic faults :) He left the stage giving her 2 kisses. He was on a could :) She made her new a cappella version of chime bells, she refused at first to sing as some guys where asking her .. then it was finished. (but for this show only ;) ) It's really funny to see guys getting on stage to catch water bootles, and other stuff like this. Oh , I forgot, michiel gave to the staff our cards we wrote in the restaurant... but I really wonder if jewel got it. That's a shame, such a price cards lost... We waited at the venue exit, the car was ready to leave and a lot of people was waiting outside. after 30 mins, some people left. (They won at a 'meet jewel show' the dutch 'you can do it'). The band then jewel came out, jewel, surprising me again by stopping and starting to sign autographs to everyone ! She's -really- nice now : She was really exhausted on the spirit tour. hope she'll remains like this. We all have gone to a pub, having a dring with others fans from a lot of countries. then we were forced to leave at 1am, and as Chris, Emily, and me were staying at michiel's home, we started to walk with him... but he did not really know how to get to his home . I think he was a bit lost in this new town. We stopped at the EasyEverything internet cafe, to write some messages on the UK official board... posting some strange voices and a part of the concert michiel has just recorded. Michiel was talking aloud. Maybe it was because they had to finish their guiness really fast in the pub ?? ;) Well, Michiel finally decided to take a taxi, and we realized that we could not get by walk to his home, as it was really far. Now, it's the moment i realized why Michiel wons his 2 times on stage with Jewel. At least , what destiny could offer him. Michiel home in amsterdam is incredible. As you enter the hall, you start to see some jewel drawings on walls, pictures... Well, michiel got a lot of stuff. In fact, all the stuff I heard about and I've seen on sale on ebay or on the internet. His collection of jewel stuff is incredible. He asked if I would see the other rooms, but I said that I would start by toilets, that would gave me an idea of the place... and I was right. Even the toilet walls are covered with jewel's stuff. Now I could easily imagine that every room would surprise me. And it did. I now call this Place Jewel-Land. The difference between a common huge fan and michiel, is that michiel doesn't not cover his walls with posters... he just made this a beautiful way. Placing stuff at the right place. Not too few, not too much. After watching Jewel's DVD and concerts for most of the night, we finally get bed (do I need to tell you how many tapes I estimate his collection?). I was leaving early on the next day. On the next day I left Michiel, Chris and Emily in amsterdam as I needed to took my train for a long travel back home. I'm just waiting for the next concerts in May, which I hope will be a lot of fun with my european EDA's friends. All the pictures I shot this day are on : http://fcartegnie.free.fr/jewel/amsterdam Francois. French EDA. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V7 #94 **************************
