Talk about talentless Mickey Mouse Club horseshit. What the fuck? Could Atlantic possibly have come up with someone with less talent and less credibility? I know opening acts don't matter that much in the long run and you're not there to see them anyway. But someone this rank actually sucks credability from Jewel by the ton AND contributes to the continuation of Jewel's teenification. Atlantic is marketing Jewel to teens(well actually more accurately preteen and early teen girls) like she's goddamned Britney Spears or O-Town. Jewel is ADULT music which has been corrupted by her record label and twisted through marketing into something its not. She caters her music to this marketing strategy with cheesy-ass pop songs, the abondonment of talent-based acoustic to studio-formulated overproduction, and PG-rated lyrics. When I go to concerts the audience should be music-knowledgeable teens and up, or maybe the occasional parent exposing good music to a child. Not screaming 13-year old girls who know only the songs they play on top 40 radio. Nothing makes for a worse live experience than sucky fans who sit on their asses the whole show and whine about, "This sucks, I never heard this, why don't they play Soandso Song that we've all heard a thousand times and if they don't play it exactly the way it is on the album we're gonna hiss and boo." I'm sick of the people on this list who sit here and take this and watch as Jewel's legitimacy as an artist and a musician is continually destroyed, further exposing her music and craft to those least likely to appreciate it, all in the name of the almighty fucking dollar. Also, the music ignorance on this list is pathetic. Three things that caught my eye in reading over the last couple of digests: 1) Hey, I'm not a big Sonic Youth fan either and yeah there's other bands I woulda preferred to see open for Pearl Jam. I might even go so far as to say they're overrated. But they're an absolutely seminal band who's been making music for 20 years and who veritably created an entire genre of music. 2) The Strokes' music is not "outdated," it's intentionally retro. Do you think the video for "Last Night" was just really cheaply made 'cause that's all they could afford? It's frikkin' irony for Christ's sake. They're intentionally going for a 70s retro Rolling Stones feel. 3) Rusted Root is a much bigger act than Steve Poltz. At the tour stop I saw in Camden, NJ there was a sizeable percentage of the audience who was there to see Rusted Root more than, or at least as much as, Jewel. Their album sales dwarf Poltzie's. This is not a knock on Steve or saying Ruster Root's music is inherently better, but just to clarify their respective places in the music world. I'm not saying you have to know everything about music. And 4) Someone recently asked about "Behind the Wall" because they didn't know it was originally written and recorded by Tracy Chapman. That's fine, this is not ignorance, this is someone who is legitimately interested in something. Hey, none of us knows everything about music. But what pisses me off is people who write back incorrect responses like: I think it's cause it's by Tracy Chapman but I'm not sure, maybe she is just known for singing it. Or saying its title is actually "Last Night." If you're not at least 90-99% sure that you're right and accurate, don't answer! Sit there and wait and let someone who knows reply. ie: People are heard calling that out because Jewel is covering the Tracy Chapman song "Behind the Wall," which is from Tracy's 1988 eponymous debut album on Elektra. Pick it up sometime, it's great, it's an important folk-rock album and an example of what Jewel should be doing more of in her music. Ugh. Well, anyway, this email isn't as angry as it should be, but then again, like I said, I just got back from having a great time on vacation. Still, I was and am appropriately frustrated to see M2M announced as Jewel's US tour opener. Hopefully others on this list see this popification of Jewel and are not happy about it either. Later, Sean Hooks "All the radios agree with all the TVs And the magazines agree with all the radios And I keep hearing that same damn song everywhere I go Maybe I should put a bucket over my head And a marshmallow in each ear And stumble around for another dumb numb week For another humdrum hit song to appear" - -Ani DiFranco ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Feb 2002 23:46:38 -0700 From: "Stacey Hamilton" Subject: Re: [EDA] "Behind the Wall" question Cause that's a cover song by Tracey Chapman that Jewel covers in some concerts. ~Stacey~ >why does everyone in the audience start screaming tracy chapman at the >beginning of the song? > >love ya, >shawney _________________________________________________________________ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Feb 2002 00:53:34 -0800 (PST) From: Christian Lobenstein Subject: [EDA] german charts/concerts Hi. 'This Way' failed to enter the Top 100 charts in it's first week of release. I'm not really surprised, even if the appearance at 'TV Total' should have been a boost in sales and 'This Way' was a topseller at amazon.de. On another note, the two german concerts in may are listed at www.eventim.de for those of you seeking tickets. 50 Euro for tickets in the front rows, insane imho. I like her concerts, but this ain't no bargain. I hope I can come up with some cash to go to at least one of the concerts. It's a fun song, where Jewel talks >about not seeing an end to her troubles but despite this she believes the >end is still drawing near. I like this song. yes its true that the NEW version of down so long is fun... but i came up with my reasoning when i was listening to on of the original versions of the song. the original acoustic version she did back in the innerchange was really quite sad and depressing musically. and i LOVE it! but anyway, it was during that recording that i came up with my ideas on that line in the song. also in the original version there was an extra verse which really tied the whole song together. and it made what i think make more sense. if i had been listening to the spirit version i never would have come to this conclusion. as for serve the ego. i think she could have written it about anyone. when i say its about herself... it might not be jewel... but anyone. cus thats how jewel tends to write. alisa - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Feb 2002 09:11:20 +0000 From: "now and zen girl" Subject: [EDA] NJC: missing emails my email is retarded and i am missing digests 67 through 72. if anyone is willing to send them to me id appreciate that very much! alisa - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail.
