For those that are into these kind of things, today is this lists' 7th birthday....49th birthday in dog years. The previous list "owner" (Jeff Wasilko) created this list on Sunday February 19th, 1995 at a shade before midnight after being totally enraptured by Jewel at one of her residency shows at the Kendall Cafe in Boston. (I think this was a few days before or after Pieces of You was released) Just thought I'd let ya all know. JEWLEBLUES@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Feb 2002 18:20:49 EST From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Album Sales Hey Guys This Way had a decent increase on this week's Hits chart. She rose from #34 to #33 and rose 31%, selling 46 000 copies this week. Pretty decent... considering there's been very little press in the states the past couple weeks. However - last week the Billboard/Soundscan figures were quite different (she was #40 on Billboard)... so we'll see what the discrepency is this week. Hits and Soundscan have been pretty similar regarding Jewel since November... so hopefully last week was just an exception. As far as Standing Still - it fell almost 10 spots on the Billboard Hot 100 last week... and it's no longer bulleted (ie - it's losing spins) at ever format it ever charted at. Therefore - a new single needs to be released SOOOOON. As in... NOW. I really don't know what Atlantic are doing... but they seem to be flip-flopping between This Way and Do You Want To Play... and they haven't set an impact date (the date the song goes for adds on radio) for either song yet... and they need to do that VERY soon because they're really starting to drop the ball... or at least that's how it seems. I HOPE they have something up their sleeves that will EXPLAIN this bizarre lapse.. Well now that the list is back on, I guess it's about time I posted the results that have been waiting to be posted for the last month or so. I think I can safely say that the poll has been a success and that results are close to expected. Perhaps a few little pleasant surprises in my opinion would be that in spite of all the talk on this list Michelle Branch has barely broken Top10 and Shakira is nowhere near. Also Dido as last year's smooth winner did well to appear yet again... My favorite album since Live's Throwing Copper from about 8 years ago: Lifehouse's No Name Face is deservingly high... also my favorite band I "discovered" last year - The Calling, luckily also made the cut... but I guess the biggest thing (apart from the fact that Creed not only didn't make the TOP20, but they have not received a ONE SINGLE VOTE - however the new album did arrive VERY late in the year so I expect it to do much differently next year) is that Sarah Harmer's wonderful album You Were Here, that I admittedly have not listened to nearly enough has come as a complete surprise... and as nobody was looking it soared past many favorites and ended just behind some of the biggest and much more exposed names at the moment! As for the music I have not heard about before this voting began and have since had a chance to check it out... I would have to single out Majandra's EP, The Sicks - courtesy of our list member Tom! This ambitious effort was NOTHING I expected her to sound... but the mixture of piano, cello & electronic music (that at times sounds mind-blowingly brilliant - particularly on Ski-Ming) with plenty of seriously dark, painful (or downright disturbing if you will :) ) lyrics offers for these pair of ears an unprecedented choice of territory that along with the emotive voice of Majandra Delfino presents a sound that can not be pushed out of your brain and makes you crave more... and thus wish that this was a full length album... I will definitely be looking forward for more, cause this is the real stuff... and the last track Hell & Bliss clearly shows that there is yet more to Majandra than first meets the ear - awesome!!! :) So thanks again Tom! :) Also, those interested should check her webpage www.majandra.com It is appropriately different and eerie... and just cherry on top brilliant!!! (good internet connection will be helpful + shockwave plugin is a must and you won't be sorry for the effort) Anyway, back to the list... U2, Coldplay, Heather Nova and Poe had some bad luck as they were left out of TOP20 by a nose and they deserve the honorable mention, but overall I think some of the biggest representatives of quality rock, folk, metal, r&b and artpop are here... both new up and comming and older artists... which means that good and quality music is for the most part a common denominator on this list. And yes... the #1 was easy to predict, but still a big victory for J list! :) OK... without further ado... here come the TOP 20 EDA albums of the year 2001 in reverse order: 20. Everyday - Dave Matthews Band 19. Camino Palmero - The Calling 18. Songs In A Minor - Alicia Keys 17. The Id - Macy Gray 16. Weezer (Green Album) - Weezer 15. No Angel - Dido 14. Lateralus - Tool 13.
