I'm going to have to agree with Steve on this one...though I'm not going to say the person is super-obsessive or whatever (hey, some people are just bored? at least let's hope!) but it would have taken quite a while for the person to do that - they had to go to all the trouble of hooking their VCR/DVD player up to the computer, pausing at the right moment to take screen captures, going into photoshop/some paint program and circling them with their comments, the time etc, zooming in and enlarging some of them, *measuring* the damn scar/whatever, then making a webpage about it - though basic as it is, it still had to take a good 10 minutes just to make the page, on top of all the time it took them to do all that other crap - it seems like quite a bit of effort for something rather silly to me...but like I said, maybe he was just bored :) I've been known to spend outrageous amounts of time on what other people may think is silly too...but you have to admit, it took some time to do that, it wasn't just a simple effort... ~ Sandy (I've had a couple of personal emails from people on the list about a variety of things - I just wanted to say I'm really not just ignoring them, they either deserve a response that takes the time for me to actually sit down and think, or I just haven't made a decision yet :) I promise to reply soon...) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Jan 2002 19:02:35 -0600 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Come on, that's > ridiculous. VH-1 doesn't even think this! Yet they DO play her videos > don't they? To give as much time as you and I do to this list I think a person has to regard Jewel as one of the best musicians out there right now period, let alone the best FEMALE musicians. Jewel isn't my favourite artist (believe it or not) but she's definitely my favourite female artist. I might not put her at the TOP of that list... but I certainly would put her on it!! It seems strange to be such a big fan of an artist so as to belong to a FANCLUB for that artist, and yet not a big enough fan to place her as one of the Top 100 musicians in her genre. I mean really, think about the number of women in rock that there ARE period... it's not that many. The music industry is VERY male dominated. Oh.. and VH1 are a music channel that play Jewel videos, not a channel devoted to Jewel. This is a list devoted to Jewel, not a list devoted to music that occasionally brings up Jewel. I'd say we'd be more likely to vote her as one of the top 100 women in rock than Vh1. And I'd also say that the majority of the members on this list would put her on that list too, even sean hooks. Not because they're mindless obsessive fans, but because they're members of a Jewel FANCLUB... seems pretty obvious. > > Secondly - stage presence. So? I used the word *I*. Yes.. it was MY opinion and I was expressing it. Is there a problem? I never said it was definitive.. I just EXPRESSED my opinion. > > > She does it with her music and her voice - that's stage presence. > Derrick > > - if you don't think Jewel, who's greatest asset is clearly her live > show, > > has stage presence... I never > ask you why you're on the list, so why don't you stop asking me that...it's > getting old, and very tired. I'm not going anywhere, so it won't do you > any > good to ask that weekly. I'm not asking you to leave... but as the days and weeks and months go by I'm more and more convinced that you like absolutely NOTHING about Jewel as she is now. You're holding on to some fantasy of what you think Jewel was in 1995-1996, and how you think she's changed. You hang around NOT because you LIKE Jewel... but because you love to hate her. That's fine if that's what you want to do... but it seems to me like it's a mighty big waste of time. I personally HATE Alanis Morissette, and I love hating her which is why I listen to her music and make fun of it... but I don't join fan lists and actively participate in discussions as to why I dislike her. That would be a waste of my time. Don't misconstrue my asking you why you're here as wanting you to leave! I'm simply looking for insight as to why you waste your time on this list when you seem to hate everything about Jewel. Oh.. and how would you know whether or not I'm happy? This is one thing that REALLY bothers me about you is that you can't just keep a discussion relatively friendly... you have to add in your own little personal insights about somebody that you don't even KNOW. A few months back you were trying to suggest that I was mentally unbalanced. Now you're saying I'm "unhappy". Did it ever occur to you that these kinds of comments might be slightly inappropriate? Frankly, the only thing about this list that aggravates me is you, just because you have nothing resembling TACT. You don't know where the line is. I'd be fine if we just had our little arguments and went on our way... I like debating.. it's fun... but instead you choose to make things personal. I don't know why that is. > If I hated Jewel's guts, I could still be on this list. There aren't things > in the sign up process saying you have to love Jewel and you have to think > she's one of the 100 greatest female artists. So get over it. I never said there was... I just think it's quite interesting that somebody would belong to a Jewel fanclub and not consider her one of the 100 greates female artists... > > > And finally the scar thing - WOAH.. that's weird that somebody would > > actually > > go to such lengths to expose something like that. > > > Who said they did? It's all about your own perspective. > I think you took more time and went through more to compose your letter > than > what that person did. Well let's see. This person watched the DVD close enough to NOTICE this. Then he zoomed it and screen capped the DVD. Not only did he screencap it but he went to significant trouble (as far as i can see) to find shots where the scars are very visible, shots where they're slightly blurred, and then shots where her hands are also blurred. Then he went into an imaging program and created diagrams with each photo to show what he was talking about. Then he created to website to display his findings. I'm not saying this took him hours - but it's certainly more effort than spending 5 minutes and typing up a brief reply.. a paragraph no less. > > > Although it's also kind of strange that the people editing the tape > > actually BLURRED the thing out. I don't know > how, > but this is what I know to be true. Oh... I meant it's UNLIKELY that they would have gone in where the scars are, because that a very conspicuous place... right under the arm... navel is even worse for a pop star cause she'd never be able to wear a belly revealing shirt! I think they go in right at the base of the breast for the least visible scarring... but I don't really know all that much about this stuff. I mean for me it would be strange for Jewel to have gotten breast implants, or even surgery to fix the alignment, especially since she hasn't fixed her teeth! I highly doubt it anyway... but who knows? Maybe it's a birth mark, maybe it's from an accident, or maybe she had something removed from her breast like a tumor or whatever. I doubt we'll ever know. I still think it's creepy discussing it. Frankly, that kind of thing is nobody's business but Jewel's. By the way - "now you're thinking"?... jesus christ - you are SO condescending. I don't lower myself to these petty little subsersive insults because I'm ABOVE that Derrick... I hoped you were too, but obviously not. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Jan 2002 20:22:44 EST From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: [EDA] re: vh1/stage presence/scar > > By the way - "now you're thinking"?... jesus christ - you are SO > > condescending. (it's already been > proven, don't try to counter this) I can think of maybe TWO circumstances where I've said a few inappropriate things to an EDA... rightfully so too... since they emailed me rudely in the first place. The first is YOU.. and the second is none of your business. And of course I'm going to COUNTER this... you're accusing me of things completely without reason! What makes you think I'm just gonna say "oh yeah ok"... come on Derrick. Oh - and one other thing. Swearing does not equal rudeness. Personal insults that kind of hit below the belt like "you're mentally unbalanced" or "you're an unhappy person" are rude and inappropriate. Telling somebody to fuck off cause they're rude and condescending isn't inappropriate, it's highly appropriate and justified. steve ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Jan 2002 21:09:07 -0500 (EST) From: "jk_fan@excite.com" Subject: [EDA] DirectTV Concert I will be taping this show and would like to get some of the recent tv appearances by Jewel that I have missed in trade.
