This illustrates to me what I think will continue to happen in the following months - female artists riding on Jewel's work. When Standing Still came out Jewel went to radio stations and WORKED them... and made a HUGE effort to get added to playlists. It took a while but finally radio stations realised that there was mileage in adding the song.. which they did... but now Natalie Imbruglia and Alanis Morissette are pulling off major adds without even having to wave in the direction of a radio station. It's very frustrating... because the new songs from Natalie Imbruglia and Alanis Morissette will likely out-do Standing Still on the charts (by virtue of the fact that they're being accepted by all the radio stations at once, instead of in bits and pieces)... but it's partly DUE to Jewel's hard work. Hopefully This Way will come out and blow both songs out of the water... we'll see. Steve > This guy was asked about Alanis' Hands Clean. I personally think Jewel dominated the stage on the Spirit Tour... but she shared it with the whole band, not just Steve... that's not a bad thing at all... if you have a band you need to share the stage with them otherwise they look like a bunch of trained monkeys in the background playing instruments... they're not "a band". If Jewel is touring with a band she needs to try and be as much like a real band as possible... put all ego aside.. she did that pretty well on the Spirit Tour i thought. The problem with solo artists that start working with more instruments in their music is that they end up hiring a bunch of studio musicians to play in their "band" and these musicians usually pretty much suck... and they have no chemistry cause they've been thrown together at the last minute. I personally thought Jewel's band on the Spirit Tour had a lot of great chemistry... plus they were all good live musicians. The current band... they're ok. The bass player is REALLY cheesy, and the lead electric guitarist pretty much sucks, but the other guitarist is good and so is the drummer and so is Steve George the keyboard player... so it's kind of half/half. I think she should ditch the electric player and bring back doug, and ditch the bass player and bring back Tony, and perhaps even bring back Brady Blade to play drums but keep the new guy for percussion (cause they're using overdubbed percussion at the moment). There's nothing wrong with Jewel playing with a band... I don't think we need to get her to play solo acoustic again... I'm sure she'll incorporate some solo acoustic into the shows as 2 of the songs on her album are solo acoustic... but the band needs to be GOOD. The new band isn't all that bad... if they don't look like they have chemistry playing Standing Still maybe that's cause it's a pretty boring song to play live. At the Intimate and Interactive they had a lot more chemistry playing some of the other songs (ENSS is a good example). In fact if you want to hear them play a whoel BUNCH of album songs download the intimate and interactive from jewel.detour.net (there an audio of it)... that should give you an idea. I think instead of trying to get her to play Solo acoustic again we should be more focussed on trying to get her to change the setlist everynight.. instead of playing the same rehearsed show. My BIG hope for the tour is that she mixes it up a bit. As good as the Spirit concerts were (I really liked the 2 i saw)... playing different shows every night is just SO much more interesing both for her and for us. Oh.. the other thing - the overkill topic. Jewel isn't getting press overkill. Remember when Spirit came out? THAT was press overkill. Instead of cramming all the TV rounds into 1.5 months... Jewel is doing them over 3 months... that's hardly overkill. I think they're doing a pretty good job of the press this time around... not too much, but not too little.. just keep her in the back of peoples minds. I'm slightly surprised that it's not This Way... but I may have an explanation for you. Through sources I cannot name now I happen to know that they have made 2 remixes of This Way. One produced by Dann Huff, with a much heavier sound (more rock) and one produced by another guy... I have no idea who the producer is or what the sound is like.. but I guess it's more poppy or whatever. It's possible that they haven't decided which version to use yet and they don't wanna go around playing the song if it's gonna be totally different to the version they end up sending to radio. Steve ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jan 2002 20:24:40 -0500 From: "Tom Browning" Subject: [EDA] jewel vs. michelle branch...and a fascination w/ young female artists hey although i've been lurking for a long time...i felt no reason to post due to the increased negativity of this board (and i guess i'm adding to it) but comparing michelle branch with jewel is somewhat silly. as a bud of mine told me when i was discussing the concept at a michelle branch concert of all place..."jewel is lightyears ahead of michelle branch" this isn't meant to be a put down for michelle branch, but more of an observation music wise. of course michelle is only 18 and has a lot of room to grow. but to compare the two on back to back shows as derrick suggested is suggesting that one could be a winner and one would be a loser and yes, this was not said, but implied. at this point in michelle's career her lyrics are simplistic to say the least. she has sacrificed meaty lyrics for hook laden pop songs. of course there is nothing wrong with this, but i prefer jewel's lyrics to michelle's at this point in her career. and this is to be expected, jewel has 9 years on michelle! their are lots of good singer songwriter out there that need promoting more than michelle branch. so derrick, if you don't mind putting down your "i (heart) michelle branch" bell for awhile try promoting john mayer, rufus wainwright, or my personal fav, a great songwriting band called the verve pipe (who are incidently about to be dropped from RCA)...people and bands that need the promotion a little more...and of course there are the mainstays who are great but don't need the pub...joni mitchell, bob dylan (his love and theft album is really, really good) and neil young we know you like the young female artists (shakira, britney?, natalie imbruglia, michelle branch, and i guess jewel, but i'm not sure cuz you seem to say more bad things about her than good, but you are on a ) so give the older males out there some shout outs and props...equal rights you know! just my observations i'm not attacking just observing...it's my mode! tom the "cactus" angel who will now go back to lurking http://tippasaurus.tripod.com "Love bravely, live bravely, be courageous. Standing Still i say: pretty cool, don't really like drum machine...like the second verse in the song...it's neato! it's the first single...but i wish it wasn't, not very representative of the album, and jewel's work as a whole jewel says: "i said it all in the song" 2. Jesus Loves You i say: great song. where's josh freese though? i thought he was supposed to be on this 'edgy' track. i don't know. anyways...nice medium paced song. ironic statement about a lot of things jewel has an opinion on...ie. abortion, models on magazines, etc...."pay a psychic for romance" ...ouch! i'm sorry to admit, i'm probably guilty of that one. jewel says: "...this is one of my fav's" 3. Everybody Needs Someone Sometime i say: cymbie the EDA got it right when she said this one reminded her of a country line dance! i like the original way she played it on the spirit tour better. but it's still pretty cool...especially the line "spivy leeks was a drip of a man/ he looked like a potato, stuffed into jeans!" bridge feels out of place...but overall ok song, i like it jewel says: "at some point it's true for all of us.." 4. Break Me i say: still a great song, despite the overproduction. i wish she would have kept it the same as the spirit tour vertion...but i can say that about a lot of songs on this album. in my car it still strikes a nerve (in a good way), but w/ my headphones, it still sounds too overproduced jewel says: "yeah, it's a love song" 5. Do You Wanna Play i say: some don't like this one, but i think it's great! sounds kinda like a joan osbourne song. cool bridge, the chorus reminds me of guns n' roses 'rhiad and boudines' w/ the 'oh, oh's' ...cool song jewel says: "there's a hidden Anias Nin reference in here" 6. Til We Run Out of Road i say: maybe cuz i'm jealous of her writing this with Ty (her husband to be) , but i don't like this one as much. chorus is good, but verses sound to 'rodeo-ish' ...Ty's influence is all over the verses...doesn't sound like jewel. slow tempo ballad, nice road trip song...but does little else for me. jewel says: "i wrote this with Ty Murray on New Years Eve in Texas" Serve The Ego i say: cool guitar riff at beginning of song. eastern vibe...ironic song, but really great song. no Sean, it's not claiming subserviance for women...it's IRONIC!! reminds me of Sting's "Desert Rose", but cooler! jewel says: "i like saying 'who says a woman cannot serve'" 8. This Way i say: a lot of EDA's like this song...but i'm kinda luke warm about it. oh well. it's too much of a 'radio friendly' song...in a bad way. it's obvious this will be a future single...i wouldn't be surprised if jewel put this one on there to make atlantic happy...it's just too generic for me...needs some meatier lyrics jewel says: "this was the hardest song to record, i hated doing it" 9. Cleveland i say: "from the air things look so ridiculous/ our fears so small, our fights so vain" ...hey, i can't help but wanna put frivilous instead of vain in that line...but hey, i'm not the songwriter here...although it would have sounded cooler, imo. i can see faith hill singing this song. i like the original better, but of course, that's getting a little repetitive isn't it. the songs kinda generic, but it's got some good qualities. jewel says: "i like this song, some were worried it was too country" I Won't Walk Away i say: sounds like Joni Mitchell on this song. when jewel sings 'violent indigo' i can't help but think of joni mitchell's 'turbulent indigo' ...she even says it the same way!! ...i like the song though...cool piano, guitar mix...good musically/lyrically jewel says: " i approached singing this song like a jazz singer" Love Me Just Leave Me Alone i say: yes!!! glad to see this one make it on the album! it's an old song, that jewel's been playing awhile. no complaints with this one. everyone seems to focus in on the 'janis joplin-esque' scream half way through the song...but the whole song is pretty cool i think jewel says: "i wrote this in bakersfield back when i was 21 The New Wild West i say: probably the best song on the album. i like this one a lot...again another great bridge. this one shows jewel still is trying to 'save us' from ourselves...oh, that priest essence twin...gotta love it!! jewel says: "the 'last frontier' we have to civilize is ourselves" Grey Matter i say: yes!! angelfood on a jewel album! so nice to see jewel did the solo acoustic thing on an album.. great song, great emotional content...just raw jewel...i dream of a day when her entire album is just like the two bonus tracks of this album. great, simple love song jewel says: "and i meant every word" Sometimes It Be That Way i say: you can hear some EDA's helping jewel with the words as she forgets them in the beginnning! another ironic jewel song...another bonus track...another angelfood type song...yay!! 'sometimes it be that way' ...that is SO my motto!! resignation rules! i love the line "i'm sorry i'm glue and the rest bounces off of you" jewel says: "This is a pretty old song. I used to sing it back when i was in my van still...the false start at the beginning is me forgetting the words" For the first time in Jewel's career, jewel puts an album representative of her live show with the album "this way". Don't let the fact that most of this album was recorded in Nashville fool you, this is a very diverse album. Some of the songs are rockin, some are folksy type, some are pop, and throw in a country song or two...and you have an idea of how much variety is on this album. And that's what i've been telling people for years! Jewel is not just a folk girl singing longing love songs (although she does that well) The rock out songs on this album are most notably 'Everyone Needs Someone Sometimes', 'Love Me Just Leave Me Alone', and 'Serve The Ego'. 'Serve the Ego' is probably the most ambitious of the trio as it mixes jewel's angelic voice w/ various Eastern influences. For the radio, 'Standing Still', 'This Way', and 'Do You Want To Play' appear to be the cash cows for Atlantic (jewel's record label). They are good songs, with decent lyrics and are fun to listen to, but pop songs are not why i listen to jewel. However, some of the songs ('Break Me' most notably) do seem to suffer from overproduction (which will always be the case as long as i have access to 'angelfood'). Many of us miss the solo acoustic days of Jewel, and she gives us a few bonus tracks to keep those fans happy. The two solo acoustic songs, 'grey matter' and 'Sometimes it be That Way' are probably my two favorite songs on the album, especially the intensly emotional 'grey matter'. I do wait for the day that jewel does an entire album in this format, for now "this way" will do nicely! OVERALL GOODNESS => 100% SPECIAL SONGS => 'grey matter', 'sometimes it be that way', 'the new wild west', 'jesus loves you', 'serve the ego', 'love me just leave me alone', do you want to play', 'i won't walk away' OVERALL GRADE => A- sorry that was so long EDA's, i noticed this was a good time to post my review although i've had it sitting on my webpage for awhile...but i thought i'd share tom the "cactus" angel _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V7 #27 **************************
