This time by Mr. Moon ["Mr. Moon" Subject: [EDA] The View/Letterman I thought SS sounded very good today. Jewel looked beautiful. I never did get to see the necklace...maybe tonight. I am certain that she will not sing SS tonight!! Call it intuition....no..call it common sense. Same song on the same show, two nights in a row?? no way! i like the way Dave treated Jewel...he introduced her with more enthusiasiam than i ever saw on past appearances. He actually treated her with the respect she so deserves. Also, about her continuing to always sing SS...well, many on this list have mentioned that its not her own choice...its up to what Atlantic tells her to sing. If this is the case...then we can't blame Jewel. However...i think Jewel likes to sing SS, she loves her song. Tonight...i think she will sing Jesus Loves You or This Way. Does anyone have any idea when we will hear more about her summer tour?? I hope to take Ciara to several of her concerts...i hope to make her dream come true over and over and over. She has made many small gifts to give her and some she bought...its the thought that counts. PLUR....Sheila. ps. The first night he played one of the songs from his new album at the time, Blue Moon Swamp. The second night he played "Fortunate Son." So I wouldn't be surprised if Jewel did an older song tonight like "Who Will Save Your Soul," but then again she did "Hands" on Letterman recently. She obviously won't do "Standing Still" again. Hopefully she does something solo acoustic. It's more likely "This Way" which would give credence(no pun intended) to the theory that this was all set-up ahead of time. But then again, it seemed spontaneous enough, she is in town and all. It also could be a different This Way song. Someone said it makes her look bad like she has nothing better to do, which is totally ridiculous. She's absolutely everywhere lately, I wish she'd promote herself a lot less in fact. If her "people" were smart they'd limit her exposure right now. It's almost overkill. And, as we have all said, you can only hear her do "Standing Still" so many times before it gets really old and boring. Here in the NY tri-state area though that song is peaking right now in terms of popularity(as well as nationally I would suspect, the video was number 5 on the VH1 weekly countdown), so I don't see Atlantic releasing a second single just yet. We'll see tonight. And I agree that her band is on the annoying and sucky side. Maybe they just need a new song to play. I think he may have done it with Liv Tyler as well. But, in most if not all other cases, they're always unable to come back the following night, even if he was serious, which in most cases I don't believe he was. Chances are that Jewel will already be in NY another day anyway for other business, so she's simply going to drop in again tonight. If it was going to conflict with her schedule, then she couldn't have done it. But this is also why I think it was a planned thing. He probably asked her earlier how long she would be in town, and if she could come back the next night if time permitted. Since their wasn't already a musical guest scheduled for tonight (which is unusual in itself), this is why I think it was planned out. Dave almost always has a musical guest. Does anyone who likes Jewel even exist on this joke of a fan list? Who runs this thing anyway? Whoever it is should grow some balls and direct it into something worth an intelligent fan's time. As it is now, it sucks. From most comments over the past few months, nothing has ever pleased some of you and your knowledge of the music industry and promotion, for which many strong opinions seem based, is laughable at best. You're pissed that Jewel plays Standing Still too much on TV. She's promoting the song and will continue to do so whether you like it or not. Wake up. Over 99% of the world aren't aware of Jewel like you are, nor are they exposed to her music like you, but you still expect her to cater to your whiney insignificance and ignore the big picture? Boo-hoo that you don't control anything. I read most of the list archives so even though I've only been here a few months, I know how polluted you let this list become. I've also read Jewel's books and Lenedra J Carroll's book, which give more insight into the way Jewel thinks and works than everything ever posted here combined, but I doubt you even care about that, because it would make you look petty and ignorant. Having no respect for people you *admire* wouldn't be so bad if you had a little respect for each other, but this list is just like all the other bottom-of-the-barrel unmoderated fan lists and since no-one cares, you won't last. Its only a matter of time before the pollution reaches toxic level. Its too bad no-one has the balls to do anything about it. I thought Jewel was good last night and had an excellent performance this morning but I'm leaving before I have to read how you think they sucked too. On that note, I'm out of here Every Day Assh*les. What a colossal waste. Wes ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Jan 2002 21:33:11 +0100 From: "Mr. Moon" Subject: [EDA] Another This Way review. This time by Mr. Moon 2:23 9.1.02 Jewel - This Way (13.11.2001) Almost exactly three years (minus four days) since the release of Spirit, we finally got a new album, that I was really excited to listen to, since during the "off" period some really promising songs surfaced and I was hoping most if not all end up on what we now know is called This Way. Unfortunately that was not to be the case... once the track list was announced many hopefully went through the song titles and were left with mixed emotions... on one side there were great new songs that didn't make the cut... and on the other great old songs we feared we'll never see released. In the middle were brand new "mystery" songs that were waiting to be dicovered and the recent songs we knew before they were touched by production. So what came out as Jewel's third album is a mix of various periods and various styles of her songwriting... like and unlike Spirit respectively. Another similairty to Spirit is that some of the good sides and bad sides of that album are almost identical to This Way's. But let's go step by step. Here's a song to song breakdown: 01 - Standing Still //I said it all in the song. The first single. First shock. Drum machine. I didn't think I'd hear that on a Jewel record. I don't have a problem with a drum machine in general, but why use it for only a few seconds here and there and then replacing it with waaaay better sounding drums. Just to show that real drums are better? Or perhaps this is a way of keeping up with the times. Anyway that doesn't have any real effect on the song, but it's a first. The song as a whole is a decent pop song, with a solid vocals, that have some interesting fast passages and a catchy tune and rhythm. Topic is good and lyrics aren't completely obvious, but simple with a nice flow of rhymes. However nothing really memorable or inspiring or thought provoking. It leaves me quite neutral... cold... still! ***/***** 02 - Jesus Loves You //I wrote this in my head on a winter walk along a frozen stream. This is one of //my favorites. Mine too. Now this is really something you'd expect from such a talent. If SS left lots of room to maneuver, this one definitely sets the bar high for the rest of the album. I love this song. It shows off the sarcastic side of Jewel, that quite frankly released albums were seriously lacking. It shines through the lyrics and her voice. Her wit makes this song adorable... fun(ny)... and still slaps down a serious point or two... that granted aren't anything revolutionary since many have thought about them... but it works. Musically stays more or less simple, but it's nice and of course lyrics are really cool. This is also a first - - so I have to say it: I like the album version better than the live solo acoustic version I got. Who would've thought. :) All who think this should've been single #2 say aye! AYE!! ****+/***** 03 - Everybody Needs Someone Sometimes //This is a song I try to take to heart because at some point it's true for all //of us. Well put on your dancing shoes and have a spin. :) It all starts here. Many have wished for it, many suspected it... and some thought it was silly... or insane... but here it is. Jewel is crossing over to country! :) No, I'm just kidding. I don't believe that... but she finally went with it... with her obvious urge to flirt with country sound, and I'm guessing a cowboy under her arm wasn't exactly an opposing influence. :) This song is simply fun... country sounds don't really surface anywhere but in the chorus so in that regard it's just a preview of what's to come. Lyrics aren't anything special, particularly the last verse seems like thrown in there at last minute... she recycled a couple of lines from Spivey Leeks which is nice... mostly cause he's mentioned... but honestly... I'd rather see that whole song on this album! ;) However... Everybody DOES need someone sometime... or rather most of the time... and even songs like this. Does anybody hear a resemblance to one of the latest Roxette songs (I can't recall the title) when she says "sugar"... hey... that just might be the title! :) ***+/***** 04 - Break Me //Yeah, a love song. I wrote it for Ty. There is also a line in here Rickie Lee //Jones let me use becuase I thought it was perfect. It's "sharp end of what //you say" Now this song is just so darn beautiful. From the very first time I heard it (solo acoustic version) I was just swept away. And this arangement is breathtaking as well - particularly in the first verse... those soft strings. Her voice is shifting throughout the song, finding just the right sound, high and sharp or whispered or just the right dose of tremolo. I also love the bridge... it's cheesy yes, but adorable enough to make me smile everytime... but the best thing about it is the general sound of it. I just love it.... it should be a slightly longer bridge if you ask me! :) A love song about letting go and willingness to give yourself completely to somebody. And as I already wrote in the Break Me/STE discussion... I still look at this song as if it's written from a perspective of getting back with somebody whose heart you've broken, just because you've never really given it a chance and then realize how they were right for you and would do anything to have them back... like get rid of all the walls and become the awesome yet fragile person on the inside. ****+/***** 05 - Do You Want To Play //I wrote this in Tokyo. There's a hidden Anais Nin reference in here. Now this song confuses me. I don't think I get it. Is this song about doing your best to have fun in this life without overthinking it... even at the cost of making serious mistakes or hurting yourself or somebody else? And is this a "no, no" or a "yes, yes"!?!? At first this song caught my ear... cause of the chours... and the line "Who gives a....". But now all I hear is a few great lines and the voice she makes in the second verse is the one she should trade mark :) and also her background screaming... it appears in the bridge and then at the end. I love that... it's so freaky... yeah! :) What bothers me the most about this song is this: "Underneath the disco neon daylight chandelier disco deity of the chivalry". What is this??????? Blah! ***+/***** 06 - Till We Run Out Of Road // I wrote this with Ty Murray on New Year's Eve in Texas. It's about Ty being //on the rodeo trail with his traveling partner, Cody Lambert. The reference to //"Lou" is Louis Field, three-time all-round rodeo legend. To say that I was dumbfounded by this song would be pretty accurate. Since I thought this was gonna be something lame what with the colaboration and all. What some other people had to say about it didn't help either. But no. I absolutely love this song. From the cool intro on it just keeps geting interesting all the way and including the sentimental outlook on the hard life on the road (and there's quite some lyrics too) the 1 and a half minute outro where she and the musicians really blow off some steam. One complaint though... where she repeats "run out of road" like 40 second before the end... she sings it in a voice that totally doesn't fit in the song nor in the mood that's created at that point. She rarely does this, but in my head this is just off. The song has that country feel as is to be expected... especially in the chorus... but she just pulls these songs off like I never heard them before... I wouldn't like her to go country... but dancing on the edge like this seems to work great for her and I wouldn't mind hearing a few more of these. ****+/***** 07 - Serve The Ego //I like saying, "Who says a woman cannot serve?" WOW! What a collage of sounds. This is definitely the oddest song on the album. Very artsy, very adventurous. And what a sound it creates. It's quite impressive. Love the distorted guitar from the first intro on and drums in the last chorus... funky outro. Jewel really shows off her vocal skills to the point you have to go DAMN! Still I would push harder. Particularly the part after the bridge. I think if this song was sligtly faster and harder it would be mindblowing, especially if all the "seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerve" parts got thrown out. Those really annoy me. It just cuts the song. And makes me anxious for her to move on. Lyrics (and their theme) are great... just (don't I always) wish there were more. ****/***** 08 - This Way //This was the hardest song to record. I hated doing it. But then again, I felt //the same way when I recorded "You Were Meant For Me," so I'm not always the //best judge You are clearly wiser now Jewel. But then again... this ended up on the album and has the honour of being the title track... when every other way this album went is by far better than "This Way". I dislike this song in almost every possible way. Except for a somewhat catchy tune, music that starts when she says "this way" at the end of the first chorus... for a brief moment it reminds me of something U2 could do (courtesy of electric guitar riff)... then it goes to verse and blah... Also a couple of good voice notes... but other than that... all I hear is... forever and forever and forever and forever in an obnoxious voice. This song is so beneath her... I dare say the worst song she's written that I heard. The lyrics are a so-so work of a 13 year old. Aggggh... enough! I already said most of this in a separate post... including the accidental comparison to You Were Meant For Me... didn't know she wrote one as well. */***** 09 - Cleveland //Yes, you guessed it, I wrote this song in Cleveland. It wasn't about anyone in //particular. I like this song; some were worried it was too country. It's less than an inch between this song and the previous. It's a galaxy between this song and the previous. Depending on what scale you use. So close together on the album yet worlds apart in the quality. And both love songs. It's hard not to believe that STE and Cleveland weren't offended to be put so close to that one. But what's done is done. This song is as far country as Jewel seems to dare go. Like I said before... I like this. She knows the limit and uses it to her advantage. She didn't change this one much from the version I have on tape. Even the lyrics are basically the same... which is a great... just polished it somewhat... particularly vocal interpretation (some endings) and added some obvious country twang. ****+/***** 10 - I Won't Walk Away //I approached singing this one more like a jazz singer. At least, that's what I //was thinking. Less notes, more tone. She reminds me so much of Kim Novak (Anybody agree? Check her song Space Needle and you'll hear for yourself) with her voice on this song. This is the furthest from any of her voices I heard before. I think that if the verses were slightly slower this voice would work better... it just seems that she has to rush the drop at the end a few times. But it still sounds beautiful. I love the strings arangement and my absolutely favorite part that caught my attention at the very first listening is the way she says "walk away"... that just sends a chill down my spine... it is just amazing. The bridge singing starts in kind of weird heights... but I'm getting used to it. Lyrics are probably the most poetic on the album which is a huge plus along with how unusual this song sounds... it's a gem! :) ****+/***** 11 - Love Me Just Leave Me Alone //I wrote this in a hotel in Bakersfield back when I was 21. It was the second most exciting news about the tracklist on this album. And the second biggest disappointment once I heard it. Cleveland is the only old song she didn't spoil. I can forgive her slowing down the begining of this song for the sake of the scream on "Why couldn't you do the same?" line and a sniffle at the very end. But how did this song end up being 3:45 in lenght??? Cutting lyrics and the band jam in the middle is how. And that is something I don't forgive... and it is the only real grudge I hold against Jewel... that one that makes me wish that she'll never release any of the other classics on her next studio projects. I fear thinking what might happen to Jessica, Nicotine Love, Carnivore, etc. if she starts deleting verses from the songs... and I bet she'll find a way to slow them down like she did to all (including Spirit songs)... again with the exception of Cleveland. It's such a shame... I mean I still love it... but it's a bitter love when you know that somewhere out there is the very same thing... only much better! That version might compare to the best on this album but this one ends up short. ****/***** 12 - The New Wild West //I wrote this about how there is no land left to settle, and that the "last //frontier" we have left to civilise is ourselves. As superior as Do You was on Spirit this one is a few times as superior here in a much tougher competition. This song is a masterpiece at least. I don't know if I can say enough. The acoustic version I heard before was so amazing that when I knew for sure this one was on the album I immediately made an announcement that this was gonna be the next Do You. But I had no idea the studio version was gonna be so out of this world. No need for describing that Satellite is the closest lyrical approximation and that that of course is a good thing and that this goes even a step further. Every verse has a differnet musical accompaniment... from accoustic and distorted guitars to electronic effects and cello in the last third that bring a flash of a Requiem For A Dream into my mind (i know it's not the same but it just does)... and every chorus is harder and louder than previous. Vocals are standard and my favorite from the wide range of Jewel's selection. Everything about this song excites, inspires and amazes me. This is the way Jewel should go. This is the sound she should be looking for... or rather sticking with. I could probably listen to 100 songs in this style in a row. It's a sad reality that this song probably wouldn't get enough airplay... but I think alternative stations would love it... and would finally have an excuse to play Jewel! :) I'd give this song 10 stars out of 5 for immediately becoming a part of top 5 of my favorite Jewel songs and is probably already #2 now, right after Jessica... and also for becoming one of my favorite songs in the global sense. WOW!!!! P.S. If Daniel Lanois made a better version of this (as Sean Hooks implied) I'd give anything to hear it. *****/***** 13 - Grey Matter //And I meant every word. WOW... she didn't drop any lyrics here... oh no wait... she did... for some reason she thought it was too much to say "I love you, I hate you" at the end. Well that sure makes sense. Also I prefer the faster version she used to do. This one seems to drag a little... but I guess it's just because I get anxious waiting for the familiar faster guitar work in my head to appear... I do like this version too, it is solo acoustic after all... the vocals are more engaging... but I just think the previous version worked better... particularly in the chorus. An amazing song nevertheless. ****+/***** 14 - Sometimes It Be That Way //This is also a pretty old song. I used to sing it way back when I was in my //van still, singing at the now-fabled InnerChange Cafi. I dedicate this song //to the lady who owned and ran that cafi, Nancy Porter. This was also //recordered live. The false start at the beginning is me forgetting the lyrics. One of my very favorite Jewel songs, got a version for the new Milliennium... and somehow Jewel thought that a way to do that was to make it slower and cut out half of the lyrics so that people wouldn't feel that pressured by them and it would be easier for her and them to remember them. This version has absolutely no gain compared to the older one and I wish she still sang that old-school... eh. As I started with LMJLMA I'm gonna finish here: It was the most exciting news about the tracklist on this album. And the biggest disappointment once I heard it. ***/***** ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ So to sum this up: The InnerChange days are looong gone and so are the songs from that period... some completely... some just unrecognizable... some are still running on the old glory. Well if she's to ruin everything good from the past then she better give us lots of great new stuff like New Wild West. This album does sort of give us a promise of a new golden period... with Stephenville, Rosy & Mick, Long Slow Slide etc. as a supporting cast she's got a leg to stand on. What a fantastic album this would be if she'd put those three songs instead of Standing Still, This Way & SIBTW... and perhaps added Does Anyone Still believe In Love as well. That just might top POY in my book. What I resented Spirit the most was that it was more or less a straight line all the way through... no diversity... but this one offers a real pallette of different sounds and it's a beautiful one for most part. It's not a spectacular album, but has enough good songs to make me look forward to a new tour and her future work. And this one could've really mended up her name in the public's eye if she just wouldn't have released the worst songs on the album. Oh Well.
