All I have to say to this is: Bingo! That reviewer hit the nail right on the head :) She did what *she* wanted to do: not what would sell records. I remember someone a while ago saying, in response to a reviewer's comments .... actually, let me get the email and paste :) The reviewers comments were: "After selling 11 million copies of her debut album, Pieces Of You, you wonder why Alaskan singer-songwriter Jewel feels the need to move further into the commercial mainstream." to which Sean Hooks replied: "I do wonder. Only logical answer is that it must be greed. And don't give me any of that crap about how she's experimenting or trying different styles of music. Her music has gotten more formulaic and less improvisational since Pieces of You, not vice-versa." Which to me made absolutely no sense.... greed? How can that be the logical answer when she is clearly moving away from what *made her money* and gave her success to begin with? If she was so concerned with making money, she'd go back to that same formula which clearly earned her the big bucks. She saw the difference in record sales between POY & Spirit, and instead of being greedy and NOT evolving or experimenting as a musician, she chose to do what she wanted: she had control of the record. If she wanted POY-esque record sales she could have reverted back to that stage and had a big "come back" record that gave the sound that obviously sold.... who the heck wants 3 POY's? I love the album, but come on, I want to Jewel to grow and find what *her* niche is in the music world....sure she may not have hit the spot this time, but she's trying different things and eventually she's going to find something in between - a middle ground - that is just going to amaze us....and personally I'd rather hear Jewel on pop radio or see her in the spotlight as a role model to the masses of teens than most of those other pop acts out there. Even Jewel's "radio friendly pop" songs are deeper musically & lyrically then most of what else is on mainstream radio.... so if the masses have to buy something, why not Jewel? At least she's sending a positive message out... ~ Sandy ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V7 #9 *************************
