I just realized yesterday, that Standing Still was Song of the Week on 'Bayern 3' (German radio station, mainstream). Song of the week means this song is played several times each day and background information is given. They played WWSYS, then a short interview and SS yesterday evening for example. Nice surprise, but wasted effort :-) The CD release is Feb. 28th, the single not released afaik. So there's nothing people could buy, even if they wanted to. And even though SS is a nice pop song, there is no way that it will even reach the top 50 in Germany. Have a look at the current Top Ten and you'll know that I live in a musical hell ;-) Past Songs of the week include Shakira for example, and she has no success here either (which is good, because I don't really like her sound. Too many influences, songs sound unfinished...). Well, at least it meant some airplay for Jewel... Take care, Christian p.s. Besondere Gr|_e an alle deutschen EDAs! ;-) ___________________________________________________ GO.com Mail Get Your Free, Private E-mail at http://mail.go.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Jan 2002 08:26:36 EST From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Re: Jewel criticism. Yeah I totally agree with this. I think part of this is the fact that This Way isn't a very emotional album. I think it's a lot less serious and a lot more lighthearted than both Spirit and Pieces of You. The serious songs on there (like new wild west and grey matter) do evoke that emotion that is generally a trademark of Jewel songs, but there's also songs like "do you want to play?" that are kind of quirky and fun (lyrically) and jesus loves you, which is more sarcastic... but these songs are more detached emotionally. I don't mind that - I like both those songs. However I hope she releases an album of all those folky songs like Nicotine Love in the future. At the same time - I'm glad she's not just staying one thing. If she wanted to simply release "girl with the guitar" folk albums the rest of her life I'm sure they'd be fantastic- - over time they'd be brilliant as she develops. But they'd still just be an extension of Pieces of You. Pieces of You done over and over and over again until it's perfect. Why do we want that? There's no growth there. It's like an artist painting the same picture over and over again until it's absolutely perfect. I think with This Way, Jewel is being adventurous whilst trying to maintain her authenticity, and I respect and like that. I mean thinking about it - every Jewel album is TOTALLY different. Whether or not in the long run they're all GREAT albums isn't the point... she's trying to develop herself musically. Besides, I like This Way... I enjoy listening to it. The Nashville Rage: Jewel This Way AtlanticWhat may seem like a tale of two apprehensive lovers - Standing Still - - may very well be a metaphorical look at Jewel's own anxieties surrounding her burgeoning profession as a singer-songwriter. Either way, three albums into her young recording career the Alaska native has yet again created a fervor with her latest offering, This Way. Despite that fact that she recorded the album right here in Nashville, Jewel was surely influenced by the music coming from the singer-songwriter scene in Los Angeles at the onset of the '70s. She's known for her own poetic writings, and Jewel's new album musically finds itself somewhere between the acoustic prose of Joni Mitchell and the electric essence of Carly Simon. Due in part to the contributions of producer Dann Huff, known for his work with Faith Hill, This Way captures some rather enamoring melodies - Serve The Ego and Cleveland - signaling a little more rock and a little less folk. Even so, among some of This Way's slick production (Do You Want To Play, Everybody Needs Someone Sometime) there's also a noticeable rawness (Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone) reminiscent of the old analog times of yesteryear. - Keith Ryan Cartwright - ------------------- ARIZONA DAILY WILDCAT Grade: A Jewel put out another CD, and most of us are thinking, "Oh no, it's more of her singing and whining about how pathetic love is or something about living in her van." Surprisingly enough, This Way seems to be a new way Jewel has decided to write and perform her songs. The album is comprised of 12 tracks, plus two bonus tracks of live recordings. The variety of her selections is entertaining and very enjoyable. She has the tender love ballads such as "This Way" and the standard rock/pop songs such as "Standing Still" and "Do You Want to Play?" Some songs, like "Cleveland," could easily pass for country. In some instances, the vocals don't even sound like Jewel's distinct crooning - - her voice is now more akin to that of Sheryl Crow or Dido. One song, "Serve the Ego," has a foreign, Eastern sound to it with its use of drums and finger chimes. The music is smoky and exotic and is completely different from anything else on the album. Jewel even includes a small spiel, appropriately dubbed "About the Songs," in which she (duh) talks about the inspiration and/or her feelings about each song, for most of which she has written both the music and lyrics. Comments range from, "I wrote this in a hotel in Bakersfield when I was 21" to "this was the hardest song to record. I hated doing it. But then again, I felt the same way when I recorded 'You Were Meant for Me,' so I'm not always the best judge." Regardless of whether she thinks she's a good song judge or not, this judge says Jewel's This Way is definitely worth checking out. - -------------- Time.com.au: 3/5 Jewel b This Way (Warner) In many ways, Jewelbs third album This Way is a lot more rock than its predecessor Spirit b and for that matter, a lot more country. There are several moments here that are quite Melissa Etheridge, perhaps without the attitude. Jewelbs songwriting, whilst not phenomenally inspiring, is still worthy of mention, particularly on bClevelandb, and bI Donbt Walk Awayb. At times this album sounds a little over-produced: the extensive use of slide guitars and keyboards accentuates this, leaving otherwise lovely songs sounding like Shania Twainbs off-casts. The three bonus live tracks b recorded with only an acoustic guitar b are clearly amongst the best on the album for their simplicity, which serves only to accentuate Jewelbs rather beautiful voice. - ------------------- Tokyo Classified: No particular fan of Alaskan singer-songwriter Jewel, I nonetheless found her follow-up to 1998bs Spirit at points surprisingly interesting. The 27-year-old blonde sometimes wallows in country rock clichC)s, such as the track bJesus Loves You,b in which she asks confusingly, bWhat about me?b and cheesy ballads like bI Wonbt Walk Away.b But, saying recently that she wanted to do an beclectic record,b Jewel on This Way also takes some risks. bTill We Run Out Of Roadb is imaginative and offbeat, bLove Me, Just Leave Me Aloneb recalls the slide guitar blues of Bonnie Raitt, while bThe New Wild Westb even brandishes techno flourishes. Verdict: Jewelbs vocal talents are as strong as ever, and, even at the risk of alienating longtime fans, you have to give her credit for pushing herself into uncharted waters. - -------------- Hip Online: Where have all our pop stars gone? Seems like country music has been stealing a few of our decent pop singers away and now it looks like Jewel is stuck between a rock and a twang. "Standing Still" is a sweetly seductive gem. It doesn't take long for the country tick to attach itself. "Everybody Needs Someone Sometime" is pure country, and it's disturbingly good. Somewhere in between country and pop comes the sassy "Do You Want To Play?". "Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone" is pure Nashville rock 'n' roll confusion. It's a blessed song that actually gives me hope that Jewel has another few albums left in her. "The New Wild West" is storytelling glory. Off on some tangent is the eastern-flavored "Serve The Ego". This song will wow you. The ballads come on surprisingly strong. "Break Me" is passionate without being sappy. Another lovely ballad, but more on the sappy side, is "This Way". There are two live tracks: "Grey Matter" and "Sometimes It Be That Way". Both are nice, but can't make up for seeing Jewel live. Jewel has all the talent imaginable, a voice that is out of this world and the guitar skills that would put many stringers to shame. On occasion Jewel pens a sub par song and that concerned me most when I was readying myself for this album. This Way is in many ways a transition. It's mature, it's eclectic, it's powerful, and it feels extremely soulful. For those who thought the spotlight had jaded a shining star, this album proves all the doubters wrong. - -------------------- ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V7 #8 *************************
