They're three of them. I know that two are WSIT and WWSYS, the third one escapes me at the moment, but they're in the exact same place the first version has the tracklist of four songs. The re-released version has seven live songs on it. Hope that helps. I do wonder. Only logical answer is that it must be greed. And don't give me any of that crap about how she's experimenting or trying different styles of music. Her music has gotten more formulaic and less improvisational since Pieces of You, not vice-versa. >her third album proper is a deliberate >step away from the folky lyricism and homespun philosophising >that made her so special. Wow, this guy sounds almost as heartbroken as me. See, when a musician veers from what made you "fall in love with that" you feel cheated, deceived, you say to yourself, What the fuck, what'd they do that for? Now, sometimes they let you down only to come back and kick ass again(ie: U2) but not always. Sometimes they go so far down the bad path that they never come back. Not that This Way doesn't have any folky lyricism or philosophising, it sprouts up a little here and there(ie: Jesus Loves Me, New Wild West, the occasional line or two in one of the album's more mediocre songs like the Randy Newman line in Do You Want To Play) but in general yes, this album ain't all that folky or lyrically playful. >Which isn't to say This Way is a bad album. EXACTLY. But sometimes it's better for an artist to swing and miss completely than to hit a weak single. Mediocrity is worse than complete failure in some ways. It's not a bad album. But the world is flooded with music that is merely "not bad," Jewel has way more talent than that. >her voice has matured >and there are some memorable tunes and catchy hooks. Again, agreed. >It's just that... These three words PERFECTLY sum up Jewel's career and live performances since 1996. >It's just >that one of the most singular female artists of the Nineties, who >once appeared to be the natural successor to Joni Mitchell, has >started to sound like everyone else An artist without a signature sound is a floundering artist indeed. Great musicians are unique, they DON'T sound like everyone else, that's what makes them stand out. And not too many people are comparing Jewel to Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell like they were in the old days. She's more likely to be compared to the likes of Shakira and Michelle Branch. Bob and Joni, Shakira and Michelle, hmmmm. >Knowing what she's capable of, it's impossible not to >feel disappointed. You said it my brother. My dad's birthday is coming up soon and I suspect he may be even more of a Jewel fan than I am; he heard my copy of "Pieces of You" playing one day, asked who was singing, and remarked that her folksy sound reminded him of folksinger Melanie Safka (of "Brand New Key" fame: "I've got a brand new pair of roller skates/You've got a brand new key..."). He loves that her songs tell stories and have a rawer, more natural sound than many of today's artists, and it really makes me smile to see him so enthusiastic about something modern like this -- he often gently jokes with me that the best music is from his generation (he's turning sixty soon). I think it's sweet that Jewel reminds him of "his" music. In '99, while visiting family in Ohio, we managed to get tickets to Jewel's appearance at Riverbend, with Rusted Root and Poltzie as the openers. Eleventh row -- nothing super close, but the concert was great, anyway; Dad enjoyed it so much, and still brings up from time to time how talented Jewel is as a singer and songwriter. He has her four CD releases and I've introduced him to some of her older work through angelfood (the song "Jessica" in particular, for obvious reasons!), but what would be *really* special as a birthday present is a copy of the concert we went to back then. I'm in my sophomore year of college now, and no longer live at home, and I think a reminder of an earlier time -- a special occasiona that we shared -- would mean the world to him. And so, if anyone out there recorded the concert, or even part of it, will you please email me? I'd be eternally grateful for the chance to give Dad something really memorable for his sixtieth birthday. Peace, thanks, and love-- Jessica ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Jan 2002 08:08:11 EST From: NewWildWest@aol.com Subject: [EDA] EDAs: it's impossible not to feel disappointed In a message dated 1/5/02 11:47:00 PM, dkaracos@utmb.edu writes: >>I think the last sentence of this says it all. I don't know who the *MANY EDAs* are besides a few obvious ones who seem dissipointed all the time. I seriously thought about this statement and if I was Jewel or Lenedra Carroll or Mr. BB or anyone in Jewels camp who knows the history of *our little community* and what the EDAs were once capable of, it would be impossible not to feel dissipointed with the EDAs. I guess it goes both ways. Think about it. I was reminded of this with the new year and, i won't lie, the fact that my b-day is Tuesday (the big 21!!).. If anyone's interested, please reply to this message, or send an email to HMN333@aol.com with the subject 'birthdays'.. Send me exactly what you want me to write when I put out the list (either monthly, weekly, etc.. depending how many names I get). So if you don't want your email address included, just give me your name and day.. Obviously if you don't mind, include your email (nice how that makes sense, huh). Unfortunately, those who did send me your b-day last time, my list was lost before I could post for more dates. The only name I remember off-hand is Sheila, but there were a couple others as well. So if you could please send your info again.. Promise I'll save it to my comp this time.. :-) Take care, Heather HMN333@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 06 Jan 2002 10:14:20 -0500 From: Mike Connell Subject: Re: [EDA] the new a life uncommon video problem At 11:45 PM 1/5/02, now and zen girl wrote: >this is really for mr.bb, but i dont have his personal email soooooo. i >was told to talk to mr.bb by chuck, at jmerch, about a problem i have >with the life uncommon video... so i hope this gets to mr.bb.... > >i have the original video. but for xmas i got the new one cus i wanted >to see the extra performances. well, i watched the video and saw no new >performances... now i know this video very well cus ive watched the >original one quite a few times. i saw no new performances. im almost >tempted to watch it again, but i dont know how i could miss 3 extra >performances! im very confused. the box had the 3 previously unreleased >songs sticker on it. its the new box, i compared the new box with the >old one... it has the "image" logo on it... That seems like a large drop, but almost every album dropped just as much (the fact that it raised 1 position on the chart shows you that). The only albums that didn't drop hugely were rock and rap albums, which is expected because teens go out and purchase the albums their parents wouldn't buy them for xmas, with the money/vouchers they got for christmas. Anyway, the US total now is approximately 912 000 copies sold. She should cross the million mark next week. Standing Still is starting to lose spins at pop radio, although it managed to keep it's bullet on the Hot 100 (it's now at #33).... but I think next week it'll probably lose it's bullet. This is probably a good thing because it means they can release This Way sooner and the album won't become a "one song album". In Canada she dropped from 32 to 33 xmas week, and then from 33 to 42 last week. Standing Still is still doing really well, going from 18 to 14 on the Airplay chart last week. In Australia the album is starting to increase on the charts. Xmas week she moved from 36 to 35 and last week she bulleted (ie - sold more copies than the previous week) from 35 to 27. Standing Still (the cd-single) is also back in the Top 50, at #46. The NZ album and singles charts haven't been updated since december 23rd... so I have no idea how the sales were there. later Steve ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 06 Jan 2002 11:32:26 -0600 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Subject: RE: [EDA] the new a life uncommon video problem Try the end (the very end) of the video. Usually when new footage of something is added, especially so on an analog tape, it's tacked on to the end. On the DVD, they simply gave the bonus tracks their own "chapter". With their own credits as well. So just let the tape keep rolling after the initial credits. Many new movies are adding on special features at the end now as well...be it a music video, alternate takes, deleted scenes, etc. Most of the time when I rent videos now, I just let them play past the credits anyway, and I'd say at least 1/2 the time there's something there. Even if it's not mentioned on the outside of the box anywhere.
