Subject: Re: [EDA] NJC: SoCal question Hi, yeah, I'm still recovering. Woke up at 5 a.m. on December 31 in NJ (2 a.m. L.A. time), got through the security at Newark Airport in less than two hours, found my own shoes, flew to L.A. and arrived at noon, drove two hours down to S.D., took a nap, then went to the Rugburns show at the Belly Up. Jewel showed, but only poked her head out from backstage, and just for a gigasecond (no performance). The Rugs were their usual excellent selves; Gregory Page joined them on guitar, Doug Pettibone, too. They had a great trombone player, as well (didn't catch his name; he played a wicked pedal steel also). Lisa Sanders sang a few songs with Steve (who did a solo opening). Pretty mellow show for a new year's eve; everyone in the band is getting older, I guess. They played a lot of songs: most of the classics, and some more obscure ones. I bumped into lifetime EDA Eric Montas, who flew in for the show from NJ, too (nice surprise), but he had to go right back to NJ, while I get to stay in sunny (usually) SoCal for a good long stretch. I didn't see Gerrit at the show, but I did see EDAS Tom & Nancy Morales (hosts of Hot Dog Fest in '97), and Mark and Mary Olmos. (I spotted but did not get to speak to Jason Vierling, guardian of the good and the true.) No, I didn't tape the show. I did get to talk to everyone in the band and wished them all a happy new year. I also got invited to the "after-show" party, but I had died of old age by then, so I skipped. Keep us posted on the gathering(s), regards to all the Easter Coasters, pick up all the litter on the ice rink and burn off a little karma! Happy New Year to all y'all. - -=-Larry-=- W1GGY2@aol.com wrote: > > :-) > > NOTE TO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIANS.... > How come no accounts of the New Years Eve Rugburns show?!! Perhaps it's because the follow-up, Spirit only did half that number (a six- million-selling 'flop'), but her third album proper is a deliberate step away from the folky lyricism and homespun philosophising that made her so special. Which isn't to say This Way is a bad album. It rocks harder than before, the Nashville production is glossier, her voice has matured and there are some memorable tunes and catchy hooks. It's just that one of the most singular female artists of the Nineties, who once appeared to be the natural successor to Joni Mitchell, has started to sound like everyone else, from Alanis Morissette to Trisha Yearwood. If this was her debut album, it would be hugely promising. Knowing what she's capable of, it's impossible not to feel disappointed. I've once again surprised myself by how little overlap there is between this and others' lists. 1. I Tried To Rock You But You Only Roll -- Leona Naess Aaaah, Leona rocks my world. Great songwriting. Incredibly catchy. You must hear "Mexico" and the title track. 2. This is Linda M -- Linda M A pleasure to listen to. Wonderful vocals. 3. The First Six Songs -- Jian (Ghomesi) Great political, social and humourous songwriting. While you can't capture the spontaeity of Jian in the studio, it's great music nonetheless. 4. Digitally Organic -- Pocket Dwellers You can't hear the Pocket Dwellers and not want to get up and dance. Great fusion of rock, jazz and hip-hop. 5. This Way -- Jewel A nice mix of acoustic folk, rock and country influences. This has a lot of Ms. Kilcher's older songs (like Sometimes it Be That Way) (read: back to her roots of good songwriting). Not Fritz Creek Store, but not Spirit, either. :) 6. The E Minor EP in F -- Jason Mraz This is a last-minute addition to the list -- I just got the CD, but c'mon, it's Jason Mraz. Acoustic folk at its best. 7. The Look of Love -- Diana Krall While it's not as good as her last effort -- _When I Look in Your Eyes_ -- I like the small band much better than the orchestra, Diana's voice is always worth a listening to. 8. Sarah Slean -- Sarah Slean I almost didn't want to include this, since it's mostly rereleases of earlier material ... but damnit, it's got "Bank Accounts" -- or at least one version of the EP does. :) 9. Aloha, Manitoba -- Luke Doucet Luke is the best electric guitarist I've heard. 10. In The Belly of a Whale -- Danny Michel I've run out of descriptions. :) Danny is a really good singer-songwriter who does a bit of folk and rocks out every now and then. [Aside: for those of you who know me -- look, it's 50% male singers. :) ] Other stuff I bought, some of which was released prior to 2001 - -------------------------------------------------------------- Live -- Jason Mraz Live -- Brenda Weiler Waiting -- Maren Ord Girl Versions -- Emm Gryner Still Waiting for Spring -- Matt Nathanson Comatised -- Leona Naess Happy -- Craig Cardiff The Cure for Bad Deeds -- Martina Sorbara For Him and the Girls -- Hawksley Workman* Whatever -- Aimee Mann Bliss Machine -- Holly Go Lightly Sforzando Piano -- snack! Becoming -- Jessica Weiser This Business of Art -- Tegan and Sara** Under Feet Like Ours -- Tegan and Sara* * not listened to yet (shame, shame) ** if this was released in 2001, it should be on the list, say #8 Favourite bands I "discovered" this year - ---------------------------------------- Linda M Jian Ghomeshi MadViolet Pocket Dwellers Luke Doucet Danny Michel Matt Nathanson Andrew Kerr Best Live Shows - --------------- 1. The solo acoustic thing is my preference as well.... The memories of those three acoustic performances in 97 are precious and I am hoping for a repeat in some way. Have a great time at the concerts. (with your $5.00 admission of course, so it';s not entirely free, plus the beers and food are like $5.00 also) so I was like right there 3 feet away from him.. now I know that he doesn't play the guitar, he plays the bass ..Dude he sang songs that were so deep in my mind that I never thought I would ever remember.. the band it's the same, just now that they are 40+ , but they look great and, my God, they have that thing that it's missing nowadays from almost any band or group from today : they act like and they still are Rock Stars!..even the guitarist with his bald spot still licks the guitar ( i know this might sound gross but that used to be pretty cool o.k?) , every song still has an amazing guitar solo , a wonderful bridge and an ending that you don't want it to end. They had a wonderful time too, the park was full, like about 5,000 people showed up and everyone sang every word of their songs... Of course wonderful marketing strategy of the race track, bring back people that Generation X it's going to go see , since now we are the ones with the buying power and will spend money , not teen acts that really are not going to get any money out of,except from the seats. Oh well.. nice to see that the music back then is still alive and better ...probably in 10 yrs teens now are going to say the same thing about the bands today.. I love it! Next stop: R.E.O speedwagon, Cindy Lauper, Stixx, America, etc... hahaha..how much fun can that be? night Uri ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 06 Jan 2002 04:30:37 +0000 From: "now and zen girl" Subject: [EDA] a few jewel sightings i was watching a rerun of mtvs new years eve show the other night and jewel was on it. before each commercial break they had celebrities saying happy new year. they were all previously taped. but anyway, jewel was one of them. i had a feeling she was gonna be one cus she had been at the mtv studios a lot lately. anyway, it was nice to see her. also... on mtv's USO tour thingy they just did they used standing still as a background song during a part of the show. so that was cool. just a few things... for this very slow list. i cant wait till everyone comes back! its kinda lonely without all the odd or pointless conversations hahahaha alisa - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 06 Jan 2002 04:45:08 +0000 From: "now and zen girl" Subject: [EDA] the new a life uncommon video problem this is really for mr.bb, but i dont have his personal email soooooo. i was told to talk to mr.bb by chuck, at jmerch, about a problem i have with the life uncommon video... so i hope this gets to mr.bb.... i have the original video. but for xmas i got the new one cus i wanted to see the extra performances. well, i watched the video and saw no new performances... now i know this video very well cus ive watched the original one quite a few times. i saw no new performances. im almost tempted to watch it again, but i dont know how i could miss 3 extra performances! im very confused. the box had the 3 previously unreleased songs sticker on it. its the new box, i compared the new box with the old one... it has the "image" logo on it... so does the video itself when you play it, it says "image entertainment", or something like that. i dont understand it really... i know i didnt get an old one cus chuck said they dont have the old ones anymore... i have a new box... its even a lighter shade of red, the alignment of the graphics are different, the text isnt as bold... the wording on the back is different. i analyzed these boxes quite closely. so now im even more confused. i fear you are gonna think im trying to get a free copy out of this. but that would be silly since i already have the video... 2 now. well thats obvious i guess if i was able to compare them hahah, im so silly hehe. anyway, i just want some help. and chuck told me to talk to mr.bb cus he was the one who put it together and spent time on the project. so i hope this gets to him. id really like to figure this out! thank you so much, i hope to hear from you soon!! alisa - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail.
