Looks like things are starting to pick up in Canada. The further promotion she's getting by muchmoremusic and the repeats as well as radio broadcasts of the intimate and interactive could further help sales. Also, the single is recieving more and more airplay all the time so that will probably have an effect. The other thing - just wanted to add in my two cents about the single. I think This Way is a pretty good choice. They could've gone with Do You Want To Play first, as it's a contrast to standing still in terms of sound.. but This Way has a shot of being a huge hit, especially if the remix is significantly different from Standing Still (and something tells me that's what they're trying to achieve by redoing it). Also winter is a time when slower songs fair best (ballads and mid-tempo songs).. so that's something in favour of This Way. The song is by no means the best song on the album. Usually radio singles are the worst songs on any album (in my opinion). Lyrically it's probably the worst song on the album and it's kind of cheesy... but it's a GREAT radio single because it's incredibly catchy and has a great hook, which is really suited to pop radio. In fact apart from Standing still, This Way and Do you want to play are the only songs i see really having a shot at success on pop radio. The rest isn't radio friendly at all. The only problem with This Way is it's another lightweight love song (ala Standing Still) and kind of perpetuates that whole image of Jewel as a lightweight writer in terms of lyrics.. they'd be getting across the versatility of the album if they released Do you want to play.. but i'm sure that'll be the third single, and it's a good upbeat song for summer. I think it'd be nice to release something like the new wild west as a fourth single, if singles two and three are successful. That way they'd be banking on the fact that she'd get airplay by default.. and that would perhaps slightly alter her public image.. If, by the end of the album, she has enough general radio support to make either new wild west or serve the ego hits she'll definitely be doing herself a favour in the long run Steve ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Dec 2001 16:12:51 -0500 From: shawneyeda@juno.com Subject: [EDA] commercial release what is commercial release? love ya, shawney the hippie angel ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! The December certifications haven't been announced yet (they will be in early January), but I would guess that the album will go Platinum sometime in December. So far the album is Gold in Australia and Canada, and Platinum in the United States. It hasn't been certified yet in New Zealand, and I don't know where it stands in Japan (though I would imagine it has gone Gold in Japan as well). South America and South Africa are also unknown. later Steve ps- if any of you have a problem with these detailed updates on the sales figures and the like, please email me and let me know. It pisses me off so much... I can not stand to read or hear the words "radio friendly" one more time. What I wouldn't give for everybody to stop making albums with "geez we have to put a few radio friendly's in" and release such songs as singles. If everybody flat out stopped making that kind of music the meaning of those words would be completely different. It's a sad, sad world where the "artists" are adjusting their music to fit the media and not the other way around... but it all starts with people... with the sheep that just don't care... as long as it is pretty. There is something to be said about real artists in the music business that don't have songs on the Billboard chart and have already released plenty of albums and love what they do and people know it and still buy their records. And then everybody remains silent when Bob Dylan wins an Oscar. How can that win??? Whoever heard of that song before? I hope they do remix This Way damn good... give it lots of loops and a little beat... back-up singers that go "shooo beeee doooo aaaaaa"... and Jewel makes a video with her and Ty squeezing naked by the fire... and in between they cut to her dancing in the a-la Nikka Costa outfit. And let all the hell break loose with all the teenagers salivating... which is the target audience of the song anyway. It's not??? Oooops! This is why she doesn't get respect as an artist and songwriter with the serious audience. All this talk about how this album is a step forward and is lots edgier and then she goes releasing the corniest song of hers (and her voice is appropriately puppy sweet)... that I think she's ever written... because it's radio freaking friendly??? (I won't even go to why this is on the album to begin with) I mean YWMFM was bloody abstract poetry compared to this. One verse had more lyrics than this entire song + it was sweet, cute and sad at the same time. Yeah yeah... she's in love I get it.... but so is... say... Ben Folds... yet he goes and writes The Luckiest. Musically the song is decent, but I'm sure by the time they're done remixing it, there'll be nothing left. Seriously... hearing this song... it doesn't get stuck in my head... it get's stuck in my neck... actually in my throat... and yet somehow - and I never thought I was gonna say this... even a little bit of "I'm a...... slaaaaaaaaaaaaaave for you" washes it down quite comfortably. - -- Have fun and stay beautiful Dr. RomeAntic, an angel with the worst stroke of luck and a flash of revelation "Don't you think that it's about now That you cooled your operations And be generous somehow Don't you think that sarcasm Is a little hard to stomach The cynicism's boring How do you feel" Catherine Wheel ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Dec 2001 20:24:47 -0800 From: Uri Cancio Subject: [EDA] re: things and thongs Well Amy, thongs are a little uncomfortable at the beginng..but after a while..they kinda grow on ya and yes..you get to like them! I replied to the list just in case anyone else thought they were having this same problem.... what I'm guessing it is, since I have Directv from the US as well as my regular Canadian cable stations, is that you don't in fact have MMM/Much*More*Music, but rather, MuchUSA.... I only get MuchUSA on Directv, and I'm pretty certain that MuchMoreMusic and MuchMusic aren't available in the states other than close to the border, if they are available there at all. ~ Sandy ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V6 #713 ***************************
