I read it again, and realized he gave it 2 out of *5* stars, not 4, as was previously mentioned I think. I thought it was 4 too at first since only 2 or 3 CD's even got a 5 rating. Quite a number got 4's though. Interestingly, Britney's new CD got 3 stars, being compared to Janet's Control CD, and Rob Zombie's latest also got 3 stars. But I don't think the same guy reviewed those other CD's. I don't understand how they rate them. Some that I thought sucked got 4 stars, and others that I thought were at least ok, only got 1 or 2 stars. I guess that's why it's called a review, and not a fact. If you are participating in the White Elephant thing and haven't sent your gift already, please do so. Don't flake out on another EDA, that's not cool at all. If you have sent your gift, let me know if you haven't already, I'm just keeping track to make sure everyone is taken care of. Thanks, Lew www.coilback.com PS: The EDA Gallery will be up soon (probably after the holidays). I'm still taking info for those who want to be on it. Just a few of you for now, but maybe when it's up more people will want to. Either way, when I get caught up with my other web stuff, I'll be putting it up. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Dec 2001 01:47:56 EST From: SeanHooks@aol.com Subject: [EDA] On teeth and the malleability of the self Sufficed to say that if I found out Jewel had some sort of surgery to make her teeth look more "normal," I'd have difficulty remaining a fan of hers. As much as I'm a believer in separating the art from the artist, the willful distortion and objectification of the human body is a tough pill to swallow. Sandy said in a recent email: "who here who's had crooked teeth hasn't wanted them straightened? or who here who is/has been 10 or 15 lbs overweight never wanted to lose it? or had a mole they wanted removed? It's natural for people to want to fix what they view as their imperfections. People shouldn't be disappointed in Jewel for being human" If Jewel gets her teeth "fixed" isn't she making herself inhuman? An object. Someone who goes under the knife because they don't have the self-confidence to be themselves. A phony. And a lot of other unpleasant things. Losing weight through exercise is natural. Getting breast implants or liposuction is not. Corrective tooth surgery is not bad. Cosmetic tooth surgery is. I don't think Jewel's mouth is in any danger without the surgery. Having a mole removed, this is a trickier one. A mole is a form of disfigurement. Anyway, I'm just voicing my concern about the subject. It's a very difficult one. I recently saw the off-broadway play The Shape of Things by playwright/director Neil LaBute(bash, In The Company of Men, Your Friends and Neighbors.) For those of you in the NYC area I HIGHLY recommend seeing it. It confronts issues like the malleability of the self, the human body as humanity versus the body as object/art object, and a bunch of other provocative topics. It's also really well-acted and has a pretty big-name film-level cast for off-broadway; Paul Rudd(Clueless, Cider House Rules), Gretchen Mol(Rounders, Cradle Will Rock), Rachel Weisz(The Mummy, Stealing Beauty, Swept By the Sea). So, hopefully Jewel is a confident enough person that she doesn't feel the need to fall in line and "normalify" herself. Beauty should go hand in hand with rarity. Something should be beautiful because it is unique, not by how well it conforms to whatever the current beauty myth is that society is pushing at us. Later, Sean Hooks "In other words, a socially conditioned act can become a physiological reality...For just as an individual's sickness may have a psychosomatic basis, it is possible for a society to generate physical ailments and conditions that have meaning only in the minds of its people...Conditioned since childhood to expect disaster, he then acts out what amounts to a self-fulfilling prophecy...Fear, in other words, could initiate actual physiological changes that quite literally led to death...the brain has the power to kill or maim the body that bears it." - -Wade Davis ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Dec 2001 08:06:06 +0100 From: "Reddiablo/Jeroen Thijssen" Subject: Re: [EDA] Jewel on People 25 - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kris Tetzlaff" To: Sent: Wednesday, December 19, 2001 4:57 AM Subject: [EDA] Jewel on People 25 > "Hi I'm Jewel . While there are significant parts of Jewel's video that resemble Tara's, I think if you look hard enough with almost any video, you can find bits and pieces that may resemble a scene from another video. Britney was wearing a white lacy shirt that looks like the one that Jewel was wearing. Britney was shown driving in a classic car and her facial expression looked exactly like Jewel's when she was driving her car. There was also a fire that kept popping up in the Britney video. In the middle of the Britney video they show a broken down car smoking, and a man lifting the hood of it just like the SS video. And the scenery in the video looks like the scenery in SS. There were probably more but I can't think of them all now. The car scenes are apparently inspired by scenes from her new movie, so that resemblance is likely coincidental. She tries too hard to be like Janet Jackson and Madonna. And it just doesn't work. People are saying that she'll be the next "Madonna". Well, there is only one Madonna. And one Janet. Everytime she's on TV, I tend to change the channel. Plus--after being a camp counselor for 11 year old girls, and hearing the same two CDs over and over and over and over again, it's difficult for me to stomach it as well. She is so unbelievabley tallentless, it's not even funny. Just about all she can do is dance. I'd actually like to see her sing live once in her life. Thinking about her is making me twitch, so I think I'm going to stop writting now about her now. - -Katie ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Dec 2001 18:16:30 +0100 From: "Reddiablo/Jeroen Thijssen" Subject: Re: [EDA] Britney video - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Wednesday, December 19, 2001 6:06 PM Subject: Re: [EDA] Britney video > In a message dated 12/19/2001 11:45:29 AM Eastern Standard Time, > HMN333@aol.com writes: > >Cut: sticking Britney<. > > > -Katie Even her dancing is unconventional.
