Subject: [EDA] The Miami jingle ball!!! Hi I just got back from the concert, which by the way lasted like 4 hours, JEWEL KICKED MIAMI ASS!! she was awesome!!, she sang 5 songs: Hands, Standing Still, You were meant for me (which everyone in the whole arena sang along with!) , Do you want to play(my favorite song of the new cd) and Who will save your soul(she did her scatting and her thing with the guitarrist where she scats and the guitarrist has to do the same with the guitar) I was in the 4th row and saw her so close it was great!. Doesn't matter how many times I've seen her , she still blows me away , like if it was the first time I saw her. She got a standing ovation, everyone was totally blown away too, which made me super happy and my friends, which are not fans , where impressed and are going to buy the new cd. As for the rest of the concert, It was great.. Pink opened up , she has a great great voice and she sang this song about when she divorced her husband that hit me right in the heart, cause I've been through the same thing . She writes her own stuff too, she was great. Then 2nd was Jewel, which was great since after her I could leave if I wanted to.. but I stayed... 3rd was Smash Mouth.. they rock! , then 4th was Shaggy...oh Shaggy... I am totally in love with him now, he is just amazing, of course you have to love reggae and I tell you, it's totally different when you see him live, I never liked him until I saw him live once before..and he's like super cute and sexy, too much energy and he's super funny. Then Shakira..she had like the most production in the whole thing..she had a cello, a baby grand , an accordionist , etc.. she started with a Tango dance, then went on and did one of her all spanish songs (she plays accoustic whith her band in this one) , then the infamous Whrever whenever (her belly dancing is just incredible and my God , the body she has, and she knows how to use it). Then Jay-Z...I just stayed for his Izzo song and left, I was just too tired and wanted to beat the traffic.. I tell you , I haven't had this much fun in a concert in a while...I can barely walk, I have no voice at all, and I'm still super high from the whole thing ,I don't know how I'm going to go to sleep... More on Jewel, she got everyone up on her feet, when Pink sang, everyone was like still sitting, but when Jewel came on she told everyone " what's up with you people, this is a rock concert, get up on your feet" and so they did.. after she sang I didn't see her again, but I saw her guitarrist, he stuck around for Shakira , he was walking around and stood for a moment right next to me, but I didn't talk to him, I just let him be..I wasn't going to start with the whole, "Hi, I just love Jewel and you are the guitarrist and blah blah blah.I figure, let him have fun . What I loved is that everyone of the performers got equal time and the crowd was just really great. I was able to smuggle my professional camera and I got really good pics. So that's it..I hope I didn't bore you with this long email, I just can;t wait to see her live again..it's the best.. she is a live artist and no record can capture that energy. you have to see her live. Ok... Buenas noches.Live from Miami :) . It's just that new fans ALL want a chance to get their hands on a good copy of JEWELSTOCK. I really don't think thats asking too much. Its you OLD fans who think you are so much better than everyone else that are making this list go downhill, dont put all the blame on the newbies! I don't think that those requesting JewelStock tapes or treed music should be considered selfish by any means. In many ways, I could argue that it's the least Jewel could do for these fans that spend so much time and money to help her live a nice, cushy life. I think many times she acts quite ungrateful to her fans, and has for quite some time. And, keep in mind, this is coming from someone who knew her way before this list was ever created. Anyway, I just thought I'd share that. They're not selfish, they're just fans that want more music. I doubt that's a really bad thing to have. At the time, it seemecd that the 20-year-old singer was following in the footsteps of such formidable third-wave folkies as Indigo Girls, Tracy Chapman and Natalie Merchant. So when Jewel's sophomore effort, 1998's Spirit, received a somewhat tepid critical and commercial response, it hardly mattered. She was plucked by the hugely successful, largely acoustic-based Lilith Fair tour, and even then, the airwaves continued to play "Who Will Save Your Soul?," the enduring (too enduring) piece of pop-folk from her first CD. And now, after another three-year wait (we'll ignore her Christmas and spoken-word albums) comes This Way, which has the task of redefining and distinguishing Jewel amid the glut of neo-folkies and singer- songwriters that have proliferated in her absence. Perhaps sensing this, Jewel chose to layer her sound till it was slippery slick and largely lacking in the guileless grace which drew fans to her simple, earlier hits such as "Hands" and "You Were Meant for Me." From This Way's opening pop track, "Standing Still," on which Jewel plies wispy grating, girly vocals, it is clear that things are going awry. Likewise for "Jesus Loves You," which neuters its worthwhile sentiment about religious fanaticism and moral self-righteousness with the same infantile vocal tactics. Another overstylized track, "Everybody Needs Someone Sometime," pairs a quasi-Bonnie Raitt blues beat with Jewel's straining attempt at sexy growling. Then, suddenly, Jewel reaffirms why her fans adore her: "Break Me," a tremulous love song, features simple, meditative lyrics and quiet appeal. Ignore Jewel's glossy Nashville croons and inexplicable lyrics (such as "Eat the flesh / Spit out the seeds" in "Serve the Ego"). Her seduction works through ingenuous reflection and forlorn acoustics - nothing more, nothing less.
