It was full circle, in a way, for the comely Alaskan, who made her first appearances in the area more than five years ago at similar radio events (for another station). The veteran performer knows how to handle barroom crowds. She gets their attention by throwing in a couple of novelty ditties and demonstrating yodeling. What's more, she has a nice variety of hits, from her biggest single, "You Were Meant for Me," to her agreeable current single, "Standing Still," to the all-purpose "Hands." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Dec 2001 12:26:11 -0500 From: "Melis H." WHY, if the artists and companies are so afraid of bootleggers getting so much money, don't THEY release a lot of live material and satisfy this apparent hunger for such recordings, that gives bootleggers such profit. If they supplied the market with legal live recordings, I don't think they'd have to fear of bootleggers making any serious money. Maybe everyone should lean towards what Dave Matthews Band is doing... I think they have a bunch of live stuff out and they all sell well... Or mabye I'm seriously missing something. - -- Have fun and stay beautiful Dr. RomeAntic, an angel with the worst stroke of luck and a flash of revelation "And now you know that I suck at this, and you suck at it too And now we're nothing more than vampires in love" Marvelous 3 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Dec 2001 14:04:04 -0500 From: "Sheila56" Subject: [EDA] (njc) poem to eda's from Ciara. Has anyone else noticed that her posture is pretty bad during interviews... maybe she slouches all the time-- but I seem to notice it the most during interviews. A few of the articles that we've read on the list lately have mentioned that she was slouched over, or chewing gum during the interviews, I think that's funny. Jewel often uses (used) the term bootlegging where it really does not apply in the truest musical meaning of the word. Many fans do so too. I and some members of the J-team have discussed this and agree upon it. The stuff we and others trade around, either stuff treed on the list (most, if not all thus far WITH permission) or just basic audience-recorded shows are not bootlegs in the true sense of the word. At least not according to what most of the record companies, the RIAA and likely most management teams define as bootlegs. Basically, the main definition of bootlegging in regards to the music industry is the _selling or profiteering_ of music without permission. That is the level of bootlegging that the music industry most frowns upon (probably because it is the most blatant and easiest to crack down on and prosecute). A looser term/level, would be just good ol' _reproducing_ without permission. We received permission to tree most of the stuff that had been treed on this list from 1995 through 1998. Actually, I think all of it was with permission, but I am not 100% sure. While much of what is traded on this list or around the world (Jewel or non-Jewel stuff) is not with official permission, it is "small potatoes", mostly because as people have said, and IMO too, it is not really harming anyone and likely IS helping spread an artists music and helping gain fans. Certainly makes sense to me too. From what I gather many artists do not frown upon the "small potatoes", however they cannot usually give it outright blessing without ticking off their record labels etc. (i.e. so they just look away) The "fear of bootlegging" of JewelStock is in regards to "professional bootlegging", such as the ones that cost about 25 to 35 bucks in most stores offering these items. These are blatant bootlegs where people are making HUGE profits. These are the "large potatoes". Some of the "large potatoes" anyway. When Jewel refers to "bootlegs" (they did have her "trained" to stop using the term a couple of years back) she is referring to the audience tapes, the EDA treed shows etc, not the industry-frowned-upon professional bootlegs defined above. Trust me, I am sure, 100% sure she and her team are against the blatant profiteering-style bootlegging of her music. (in my opinion, what artist would not be? I sure would not want someone making 95% profit on my creative arts without me getting any of it) In regards to Jewel mentioning "bootlegs", while perhaps not all of these stories/mentionings fall into this category, many of the "Jewel mentions bootlegs" stories are from a few years back before she was "trained" (partially at my and MrBB's persistence) to refrain from using the term. Not to mention that now a days all she has to do to get info on her old stuff is to just get in touch with MrBB, who now probably has all or at least a good 99.9% of her creative arts cataloged and archived.
