Howdy y'all, I was just thinking about how Jewel's latest album did 50% better than Atlantic was thinking it would. Now, at first this sounds bad, like they don't think Miss Kilcher is quite cutting it anymore. A look from another perspective can really shine some light on this. What if they expected Jewel to do MUCH better with This Way than Spirit, and it didn't happen that way? I think it better to underestimate Miss Kilcher, than to overestimate her. The reason I believe this is that Jewel doesn't like to be in the spotlight...what I mean is, she doesn't go for the fame thing. Another reason is that Jewel, not liking fame, is not a mainstream artist, in the sense that that is what she was seeking. We all know Miss Kilcher would rather play for the response of the audience than for a response from record sales. Having said that, I'd like for y'all to think a minute about whether or not Jewel is to be seen as part of the mainstream music machine. She doesn't fit in with all you see these days...like Britney Spears, BSBoys, etc. I'm glad that Jewel doesn't "manufacture" her music like so many other artists. Subject: RE: [EDA] Review of 'This Way' from Blender Interesting critique. I agree with just about everything he said. Although I think his reference to Standing Still was meant for Jesus Loves You. I think it's funny how he didn't like the title for Serve the Ego. Now that I think more about it, it really isn't that catchy of a title. Oh well. At least it's a good song. :-) Clark really seems to know his music quite well. > ---------- > From: ChrissyPf1@aol.com[SMTP:ChrissyPf1@aol.com] > Sent: Thursday, December 13, 2001 11:02 PM > To: jewel@smoe.org > Subject: [EDA] Review of 'This Way' from Blender > > > ** (two stars) > Given Jewel's penchant for writing acerbically erudite lyrics, it seems > miraculous that her first two albums have sold a combined 23 million > copies. > It's probably because her tunes are as middle-of-the-road as they come. > Nor > has Jewel felt any need to tinker with the formula. This Way got a pretty good review. ********************************************* Jewel, "This Way" Atlantic Records 4 out of 5 stars While most Lilith Fair gals performed in Birkenstocks or boots, Jewel went against the earth-mama and folk-chick vibes of that all-woman tour and played her dates in snappy high heels. While many rock artists fear any activity that may smell of pretension, Jewel had the audacity to publish a book of her poems. And we all know a rock star who dares lay claim to the "P" word, who dares to practice the same art as Shakespeare and Yeats, risks being pilloried and ostracized as an ego-drenched poseur. And on her new album, "This Way," Jewel wheels out this spiffy lyric: "Who says a woman cannot serve? It would be my pleasure. Who says it is not my destiny to let you control me?" Before you feminists scramble for a noose and the nearest tree limb, consider Jewel's high heels, her poems and, most importantly, her savvy new album of rootsy yet refreshing rock. The conclusion: Jewel may not be a robotic slave to trends, hipness, political correctness (feminist division) or expectations, but she really isn't a rebel, either. "This Way" is not iconoclastic. Rather, Jewel just unabashedly meanders down whatever by-way her muse, or life, happens to lead her. At times, she gushes sweet lovey-dovey nothings, as if she were a giddy school girl who's imitating Elizabeth Barrett Browning (she of "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways" fame). On her song "Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone," Jewel pulls a Bonnie Raitt and gets bluesy over growling guitars. On "I Won't Walk Away," she sounds like a broken jazz diva cooing a tragic torch song in some smoke-choked dive. At times, Jewel gives in to her inner poet and tosses out such lines as "the lambs in the ghettos who worship their Gepettos." Like the fruity but delightfully surprising poetics of the Indigo Girls, Jewel knows just how much leash to allow her poetry muse. While some of Jewel's rootsy, folky songs are spiked by clever touches of electronic loops and urban beats, other tunes could pass for Shania Twain's brand of country. And those lines about serving and submission? Perhaps Jewel is addressing a guy, or perhaps she's talking about submitting to her true inner self. After all, the song's title is "Serve the Ego," and the opening lyric is "Mirror, mirror, do you like what you see?" You know how these artsy types can be, especially an electro-folkie, high heel-clad hippie rocker with a poet's soul. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Dec 2001 17:59:21 -0500 From: "cymbaline" Subject: [EDA] pretty pic of Jewel i found this really pretty pic: http://www.absolutedivas.com/cgi-bin/display.cgi?path=/jewel&loc=serv11&img=j ewel_072.jpg cymbie tree hugger - -- when night falls it's dawn one must reach for. - -a. camus ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Dec 2001 17:20:12 -0600 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." 'This Way' did 50% better than Atlantic expected, and this sounds like a bad thing? I think thats pretty damn good. Now, if Tony Gwynn did 50% better than expected when he consistantly batted .340, well, that would put him right around .510. I'd say that's a pinch better than just cutting it. Come to think of it maybe my employer will pay me 50% more than last year. Nah, that'd be no good. I just wish that she doesn't sing only 2 songs like in New York, I know that there's a lot of performers but I hope each one gets equal time...most of the people down here are, as you all know, very latin will go for Shakira the most, but I know that if Jewel puts on a good show , she will get more airplay time (she's getting played a lot here) and more album sales.. all of the people I know love her new single. The weather is great down here, like 70 at night and not even 85 daytime, I hope she and cowboy go rent a boat ,chill and get a tan.. it's beautiful!! Anyone on this list that is going?? only me?? am I the only Jewel fan in all of south FL crazy enough to be on this list? anyway..I 'm going with a couple of friends and I have a plan...we're going to try to catch the sound check and I will sell my two good looking 22 yr old chic friends to the first security guard that let us in , ( I can't do much, I'm 28, I;m at an age that the men that find me attractive are either 18 yr olds or 40 and up yr old :) so let's see... Also on today's Miami Herald there was a good article on Jewel, she was on the cover of the Weekend Magazine , also a pic in the index and then the article..I won't put it here 'cause it's kinda long and I'm lazy.. but it says pretty much what all the other articles have mentioned and it covers everything and praises her new album. ssooo.. that's it..anyone going let me know and I'll tell y'all about it on monday. This would be my 4th Jewel live concert and I can't wait for the real tour that starts in Feb for my 5th! peace and have a great weekend!
