I went to interview Jewel for my college TV station and ended up meeting a lot of EDA's who were all decked out in Jewelstock shirts and pins! I loved her performace so much and was moved by the fans... I joined the list the next day! This list is totally different from back then, but what do you expect... it's been a long time... I think the list gets out of control sometimes and it disturbs me when people get mean, but I stick around for the updates and because I missed Jewelstock by a week back then and I'm still hanging on to the possiblity that they'll be another! Ha ha. I guess I'll be here a while! - -Laurie ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Dec 2001 23:25:54 EST From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Re: atlantic In a message dated 12/8/01 10:43:23 PM Eastern Standard Time, owner-jewel-digest@smoe.org writes: > Is this guy saying that This Way was more "produced" than Spirit????? > > Anyway, I liked when he said that Atlantic should let her be herself. From all accounts, Jewel is perfectly happy with the music she's making right now, and has no complaints about what Atlantic is or is not letting her do. She seems very satisfied with Atlantic. I think we have to realise that this isn't to do with Atlantic.. it's Jewel's choice of direction. Some of us (ie - me) like it, some of us don't. I personally think the LAST thing she should do is revert to solo acoustic now... we KNOW she can do solo acoustic - I want to see her GROW as a musician.. not stand completely stationary. "Extravagant panties, public urination and dirty rhymes: Is coffeehouse pinup Jewel -- she of soothing song and best-selling poetry -- a secret gangsta bitch?" If that isn't a sign of a refreshing interview, Jewel also finally admits she dated Sean Penn, tells a "gynecologically detailed" joke, and talks about eating fried bulls' testicles. You can read the full article and view all of the pics (new shots from the This Way shoot!) at Planet Jewel ( http://jewel.tanweb.com ) .. Click on Information and then Articles.. And please don't copy it for your sites or any other use.. It was a BITCH to type up =) PS -- I never saw Jewel as the thong type ;-) scott.evans [[mind is DISCONNECTED. but my heart is WIRED.]] AOL IM: sevans112 . Yahoo! Subject: RE: [EDA] Re: Review from The Daily Mississipian I agreed with it too. He hit the nail right on the head. It's just too bad there *are* those fanatics out there though, like you mentioned. But I guess that's going to be the case with most any artists. But it's nice to see such a realistic review amidst all the standard run of the mill ones. - -----Original Message----- From: George Rue To: jewel@smoe.org Sent: 12/8/01 6:57 PM Subject: [EDA] Re: Review from The Daily Mississipian Wow! This review hits the nail on the head. I completely agree with this reviewer. You have to look at the album from outside in. You can't be a fanatical fan, and just love everything that she does. To be fair you have know about Jewels musical past and you have to approach it from neutral ground. I think this reviewer knew exactly what he was talking about. Here are a few excerpts from the review that I agree upon - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ - ---- - -------------- >Jewel's 'This Way' lacks direction but promises better things down the road< >"This Way" a case of growing pains is a little misguided, but the Alaskan's first "full band" record hammered out in Nashville suffers from a serious identity crisis.< >Nashville has swallowed the young songwriter, "This Way." The album is her most tweaked and polished to date< > None of the rough edges of "Pieces of You" can be heard, which is disheartening< >"This Way" amps up her sound into a wall of mix station ready pop but does nothing to engage the listener.< Very True!!!! >the subject matter also leans toward the cowboy way. It's more than a given that Jewel is more than fixated on the life of her rodeo champ boyfriend< >Atlantic Records needs to stop pushing her into a clichE< >her overexposure as a celebrity is disheartening< >>>>>Photo spreads don't make great songwriters<<<<<< >>>>>The intimacy and fragile feminism of "Pieces of You" doesn't need to be revisited, but its authenticity and spirit does.<<<< - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ - ---- - ------------------------ ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V6 #674 ***************************
