I'm not sure if that's her original hair color or not, but I like it much better than the "must be blonde to appeal to the LCD" color she's had since. I wonder if it's in her contract to stay blonde ;-) Regardless, it would be a nice surprise to see her hair dark again. YWMFM seems to be the most "artistic" video and she looks the most natural in it, so I guess it's my personal favorite. Nothing was said about it then. So if there are going to be new guidelines established, then they need to pertain to everyone and all posts. Not just certain ones at certain times. I speak from experience, as always. :-) I'm doing nothing that hasn't been done before, I'm just doing it on a smaller scale. Subject: [EDA] NJC: A little reminder :-) As I did with this very post, remember that when you see the letters "NJC" in the subject line of a post, it means that there isn't anything related to Jewel in that post. Therefore, if all you want to read about is Jewel, simply don't open that letter. Or if you accidently open it, then just don't read it. Close it, and delete it. Takes about 2 seconds. So if you see 14 posts within 10 minutes from me that all contain a subject like "NJC: I love Michelle Branch", then chances are, that post won't have any Jewel content in it, and it just might have some content about Michelle Branch. :-) Therefore, if you don't care to know anything about her, or whichever the subject is referring to, could be anything, not just another artist, then simply *don't read the e-mail.* All you people fussing over these things are IN CONTROL of this. I'm not there pressing the buttons on your computer for you. For example, if Alisa sent in 20 posts about how much she loves Steve Poltz, and was polite enough to use NJC in all of those 20 posts, chances are, I wouldn't read a single one. Cause I don't care about those things. But at the same time, I certainly wouldn't send a letter to the list fussing at Alisa for sending in those posts, for that is her choice and she has every right to do so. My only complaint would come if someone forgot to use NJC. So I do try to do that myself. So before people keep complaing about things they have control over, maybe they should think about how easy it is not to read a letter that may not interest them. Thanks for your time. Derrick PS...I wasn't trying to pick on Alisa...I just used that as an example...I don't even know if she likes Steve or not. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Dec 2001 20:15:24 -0000 From: "Chris Groves" Subject: [EDA] DON'T FENCE HER IN This is from the New York Post at http://www.pagesix.com/celebritynews/6655.htm - -------------------- DON'T FENCE HER IN By DAN AQUILANTE WHATEVER happened to Jewel - you know, the pretty blond singer/ songwriter who shook up pop with her monumental multi-platinum album, "Pieces of You"? She has found love with a rodeo star and has written pair of best-selling books. She even took a turn co- starring in Ang Lee's film "Ride With the Devil." Most recently, the 27-year-old singer, who came to fame at just 18 - ushering in pop's waif era - released "This Way," an earthy collection that reflects her life outside the limelight. Jewel told The Post, "I tried to make it a raw record, so I recorded it live with a live band - no overdubs. I tried to make the songwriting provocative and eclectic. I think that this is the first record that really sounds like me." She'll demonstrate that natural-woman sound Thursday as the headliner at the Z-100 Jingle Ball, where she'll be joined by artists Jay-Z, Pink, Sugar Ray and Alicia Keys, to name a few. Admittedly, Jewel has kept a fairly low profile - even while promoting her new disc - but playing an annual Christmas concert like the Jingle Ball appealed to her. When asked about the holidays, she reminisced about Christmases of her youth: "When I was growing up on my family's homestead in Alaska, we'd always go to the woods with a horse to get a big spruce tree to take home and decorate. It was an idyllic country Christmas." Post: You grew up in Alaska and now live on a big ranch in Texas. What's the attraction of these states? Jewel: I love open space. When I was a kid, I loved walking out of our small cabin and writing in limitless open space, where my imagination could wander. Even now, my best social and political writing happens when I'm furthest away from pop culture. Post: These days, you're dating Ty Murray, the rodeo bull-riding champion. Talk to me about the rodeo. Jewel: Rodeo represents the morals and ethics that America was founded on - and that I'd like to see return. Post: Like what? Jewel: Take Ty. He says exactly what he means and does exactly what he says. Things are black and white to him. He's hard-working, disciplined. He's an upright citizen who wants to live an honest life. That's one part of the rodeo. The other part that appeals to me is that you have to earn respect. I miss that about music, where people will respect you even if you aren't a good person. Post: Anything else? Jewel: The amount of skill you need is tremendous. People think that bull riders are just crazy guys who are hanging onto a bull for dear life. It's a lot more than that. It really does take smarts and incredible athleticism. Post: Do you worry about Ty? Jewel: Bull riding is the most dangerous sport in America. Every day, you get on an animal, a very dangerous animal that you have no control over. I've seen riders killed. Yeah, I worry for him, but at the same time, it's what he does and what he loves doing. Post: After the success of "Pieces of You," and your books, you seemed to disappear, as if you were rejecting your own fame. Is that notion off-base? Jewel: I was talking to Moby about that. There are two kinds of musicians - the kind who wants fame and uses the music to achieve it, and the other who sees the music as the destination, and fame is just a side effect. They're the lucky ones. Post: What kind of musician are you? Jewel: For me, fame was definitely the side effect. Having achieved fame and not having counted on it, I had to make big adjustments in my life. I got tired of talking about myself all the time. It isn't a healthy way to live. Post: Reportedly, you are extremely protective of your work. Is that why you produced yourself on this record? Jewel: Hiring a producer is like hiring an artist to paint your portrait. Post: How so? Jewel: Look, if you hired Picasso to paint you during his blue period, it will look like you, but it will look like a Picasso during his blue period. Producers are like that. Post: If you were producing another artist, what would your mark on the work be? Jewel: I'd try to let the artist be themselves. - -------------- Chris. http://www.jewelfan.co.uk : Jewel - Pieces Of UK ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Dec 2001 12:36:34 -0800 From: "Mark and Mary" Subject: [EDA] Re: Kilcher and Harrison I am not sure what the schedule is, but I know for a fact that Kilborn doesn't always tape the same day it airs. The show probably was taped the day before Harrison's death, but even if it wasn't... so what? Maybe the Beatles played no role whatsoever in her life. It's like expecting her to comment on what she thinks of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Most of us do feel sad about his passing, but you shouldn't assume heavy/sad topics are going to be brought up on lighthearted shows like Kilborne.
