Howdy y'all, I have been talking recently to the person I took to Nashbash about what the EDA "family" looks like from an outsider's perspective. She has been on many band's/artist's mailing lists, and she says that the EDA's are by far the most organized and involved fans of any list she's seen. This is music to my ears, but she certainly hasn't seen some of what goes on here. Please people, let's try to maintain this image...nobody should have to resort to insults or hostile flaming...if you disagree with another, you disagree, that's all. If there are conflicting views or interests bothering anyone, and can't be ignored, try discussing them in a way that doesn't leave anyone feeling angry or hurt. It's not hard...I do this whenever I post something contrary to what another says. I have had a heated discussion with Derrick, but he and I were able to put that behind us, and we can communicate better, resulting in much more interesting conversation. Like, don't say that "this song sucks"...try to explain why you think this, and what might change it for the better...y'all get what I'm saying. I've been on this list for a long time now, and I wouldn't give it up for anything, unless I absolutely had to, no matter what happens here. I kept saying that I would read them when I had time, but I ended up deleting all of them, except for a few recent ones and a few from Nov 13. I was so busy, that I never even had time to pick up the CD or watch Jewel on TV. Luckily, I have the best sister in the world, and she picked up the CD for me. I have only listened a few times (again, been busy). But, here is what sticks out most in my mind (I don't have the lyrics in front of me, so I may mess up some of the exact lines): Standing Still - Love it! It's got a great beat and I love her voice, especially when she sings "Do you love me?" I think that line sounds much different than "Do You Need Me" and "Do You Want Me". Good choice for the single. Jesus Loves You - I generally like this song. Especially "Having my picture in a magazine makes me specal...how special are you?" I noticed the "other" line -- the one about the controversial issue too. I don't think it was a necessary part to include in the song, but I don't hold a grudge. It's still a good song! Everybody Needs Someone Sometime - I LOVE this song. It's always in my head. And I'm not a country fan! It really shows how versatile she is. The only part I don't lke as much is that different verse, the one with the bumblebee and sugar. It just sounds kind of weird with the rest of the song. Break Me - I think this is her absolute most beautiful song ever! (Not necessarily the best, just the prettiest) Maybe it could tie with Violet Eyes. Both beautiful songs. Do You Want to Play - This is such a fun song. I love how the chorus is a bit different each time. Love the "Who gives a -- " too. Till We Run Out of Road - A nice song, I like the lyrics a lot. I have to listen to it more though. Serve the Ego - Her voice sounds very different for this song. I like it, because it is fun but very serious in that it makes some good points. This Way - Very nice love song. Very different than I expected, I guess. Great lyrics, very "true". Cleveland - I really need to listen to this more, but I like how it seems slow and then has more of a beat. I Won't Walk Away - She really gives it her all in this song, and I can certainly relate to it. She kind of sounds like Sarah McLachlan, or maybe Dido in the beginning. Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone - Everyone seems to love it or hate it. Personally, I like her other versions better. The scream doesn't seem to make sense it this one. It would be better with a nice buildup, as in the past. The New Wild West - This is a great song, musically. The lyrics are okay, but her voice sounds great singing them. I love the cello in the background too. Grey Matter - I had never heard this song before the album. It's a great live version. The slight laughter (audience) after "I hate you" makes it sound so personal. Nice lyrics. Sometimes It Be That Way - Yes, some of the lyrics are missing. But I still think it's great. My favorite line is the one about Romeo, because she says her name in it. Makes it more personal. I also love the way she forgets the words in the beginning. Really shows her personality. Sorry if this is too long. Hope you all have a great holiday. Good luck on finals, for my fellow college students. Talk to you all soon! Thanks, Patricia :-) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Dec 2001 02:30:01 -0600 From: "New World Warehouse" Subject: [EDA] Serve the Ego and Break Me - somewhat simple analysis Okay here's the loud mouthed songwriter's perspective on these songs since it seems to be sort of a topic: Break Me: I'd say my first impression. Unconditional love. Basically, "no matter what I'm yours" sort of thing. And if it really was for Ty, it may have a slight - equine meaning (like the breaking of a horse). While horses can be broken, it's not as bad as it sounds and if you've ever been around horses (I come from a family of horse ranchers), you'll know that some horses actually enjoy the companionship that comes with it. Serve the Ego: My girlfriend loves this song. She says basically what she gets out of it is something a lot of women go through. Sometimes they actually do enjoy catering to their men. It's nothing to do with control or anything just like sometimes I really want to do just everything for her. Sometimes no amount of psychological degrees or analysis can completely describe matters dealing with emotion. For the most part, the main thing about music is...the song means to you whatever it means to you (assuming you actually listen to it) and it may not mean the same thing to someone else. So, someone like Sean, who tends to take the sort of "dominance" approach to the meaning may not like the songs because of that...while like someone like my girlfriend loves "serve the ego" because she can relate to it. It's a matter of letting people enjoy the music on their own terms. So just because some people don't agree with your viewpoint doesn't mean they have "bad taste" it just means they get something else out of it, you probably don't. And as Sean should know, the most interesting thing about all of this (at least to me) is the fact that someones analysis of a song or anything similar says a lot about their personality. Oh and if you want some credentials, I was in Air Force intelligence so I've studied quite a bit of psychology...maybe even some stuff they haven't let the college folks in on yet ;-) Lew www.coilback.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Dec 2001 02:39:26 -0600 From: "New World Warehouse" Subject: [EDA] Jewel lying Ya know, I was just thinking...oh, let me start by saying, if you don't buy into all this astrology crap, that's ok...I'm not Miss Cleo or anything, I just think sometimes the stuff is interesting and for the most part, can be explaned scientifically as well....anyway... I know a lot of people have talked about Jewel lying or actually, even more accurately, switching stories around on things. I've been songwriting now for about 11 years or so. I know I've forgotten more songs than I've ever recorded and just as someone pointed out sometimes one incident is the reason for more than one song. But speaking as a Gemini (my birthday is two days after Jewel's), I know we have a bad habit of forgetting some of the details to things and then our stories get mixed up. There's been a few times I've had to answer questions about my songs and then a few days later I realized, "whoops...that's wrong...that's the story for this other song." Even as a somewhat local artist right now, dealing with the band, music, constantly writing new stuff, it's a lot to keep track of. Those who have never had to do it, don't realize what kind of work it takes. Anyway, I have a feeling a lot of times she just gets it all mixed up and that's just something we do (I got two other Gemini people I know and they do the same thing). Past that, always keep in mind the media as well. Sometimes just simple editing and pulling things from context can also make things seem like a lie even though she explained it originally in a way that actually made sense (for a perfect example of this think about the John Lennon "we are bigger than Jesus" statement). When it all comes down to it though...everybody lies at some point in their lives. I'm sure she's told a few whoppers too, but hey, as long as she's staying somewhat true and making good music, isn't that all that really matters ? It could be worse, she could be pulling a Vanilla Ice (saying he's from Miami when he's actually from Dallas). I mean, first of all, not everyone likes the Beatles and as hard as it is to believe a lot don't even know who they are (especially younger people). Not to mention, I think it's kinda lame how everyone starts talking about how great someone is AFTER they die. You'd think it would mean more to say it while they were alive to hear it and react to it. George Harrison was a good musician, but was definitely overshadowed by John and Paul. I have a feeling when Paul dies, there will be a much bigger reaction in the music community. But I could do without the whole, "so how did his death affect you ?" Especially, since as far as I know, they didn't hang out or anything. Someone asked me since I'm a big Beatles fan and I said, "well it sucks, but my favorite one was dead already anyway." Not to mention just how funny it is how someone's record sales go through the roof after they die. Humans are a weird lot. Oh well, I'm not getting on your case, just kinda blowing smoke... BREAK ME: becuse this song is written about ty i think it is one of jewels best love songs. increadibly beautiful with its poetic lyrics. the first time i heard it i didnt know it was about ty. so my first reaction was wow this is a damn good love song. to be honest the version i downloaded was so bad that i really couldnt undertand anything she was saying clearly other than the chorus. so i was really basing my first impression off of just the tone of her voice. which isnt always the smartest thing to do in a jewel song, due to her clever sarcastic ways... but i know her voice very well by now... and it was sincere, very much so. now that i know the lyrics i only think its even more sincere. its making it very clear that she is vulnerable to his love. shes willing to recieve him but warning him that its not all gonna be smooth and simple, but that she is complex, she has "thorns like any rose", and pain is included with love, but she is willing to welcome him to herself. in a sense he may have to tame her, but she is now willing and vulnerable, and most of all she wants it...love that is. this song is probably her best love song, in MY opinion. next. SERVE THE EGO: i dont know where to begin. this song is such a mixed feelings song. sometimes when i hear it all it sounds like is sexual. the next time i hear it all it sounds like is her being sarcastic about serving yourself... your ego. then sometimes its both at once. id really love sooooooo much to hear jewels meaning to this song. not that it would be the right meaning, but it would settle some of the debate as to why it was really written. like jewel, im really in support of letting the interpretation of a song be up to the listener. but on some songs, especially jewels, its just nice to know the story behind it. it doesnt mean that we cant all interpret the song our own ways still. well theres my 2 cents and my opinion. alisa - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 Dec 2001 09:31:36 +0000 From: "now and zen girl" Subject: [EDA] rosie sorry im so behind guys, i didnt check my mail yesterday. in result to that this is my 3rd post today, and i fear i have another one comming hahaha jewels performance of ss on rosie was soooo amazing, by far the best yet! very clear. the back up singer really improved the song, especially jewels singing. im sure others have noticed the difference in how well she sang the higher notes in the chorus on the rosie performance compared to the others. i think that the high pitch squeek that the other guy was making was really throwing jewel off, and it seemed she was struggling with her voice to keep it in the right key and not go off as he had. she was very clear in this performance and she hit every note perfectly!! very nice jewel!!! the interview was hilarious... my favorite jewel interview to date. jewel was funny, sarcastic, sweet, everything jewel is when you see her in concert... just a lot less of it. it was like a preview of what jewel is really like. she seemed very high in spirit and really happy all around. i thought it was funny how i could answer all of the about her questions except for the homer zip code question. i loved when she didnt know the time to ywmfm. i was like well rosie, which version. i know them all. but how is JEWEL supposed to know that... her reaction was perfect... why should she know the time to a song she doesnt even listen to... she just sings it.... that was great. aaaaaaaaahh such a long review... im sorry! alisa - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V6 #665 ***************************
