Break Me. I think Sean's interpretation of Break Me was a bit too literal. I agree that if you look at each word so literally the song could seem to be talking about the willful subjugation of a woman to a man. However, to me, the lyrics of the song suggest more of an eroticism than literally men controlling women. Lyrics like "I'll let you make me" seem to me, quite erotic. She's not saying "I'll let you be violent towards me"... it's like a gentle erotic thing going on. I think the lyrics could be reinterpreted in an extremely sexual way... I'm not saying that that's how I see it - but it's there. I think she's trying to recreate the idea that a person can want to be possessed so completely by another person.. and she does it using lyrics that could be considered extremely sexual. Saying it's talking about men having violent, sexual power over women reminds me of those super politically correct women's rights activists who are more extreme in their views than the people they're criticizing. Serve the Ego. I think this song can be interpreted in a couple of ways as well. I personally think the lyrics are too extreme for Jewel not to be satirizing.. or at least criticizing. I think she's taking on the character of a person who believes that women are there to serve men in sex and relationships.. and by being so extreme about it in the lyrics she's in turn being critical of that attitude. I mean the title is Serve the Ego - do we really think Jewel believes that women should be there to serve a man's ego? I highly doubt it. It's like when the Beatles said "We're bigger than Jesus".. they were clearly being critical of a society where a band can be more famous and more beloved than spirituality and religion. Jewel is being critical of a society where women are expected, to an extent, to be a slave to a man in a relationship.. and take a back seat, be dominated etc. Songs like Race Car Driver and Rocker Girl are very obvious satires.. almost TOO obvious. Serve the Ego, to me, is more subtle.. and less funny. It's more critical than satirical I guess. There have been other interpretations of this song too - many critics have seen it as a look at fame. How women in the entertainment industry are expected to downgrade themselves and whore themselves out in order to get ahead. And the chorus being a comment on how society kind of elevates celebrities. And the "Tutt Tutt..." line is a comment on how celebrity can be very fleeting. Personally, I think this interpretation is kind of a stretch... but I think the song is definitely quite ambiguous in it's meaning - which, to me, is certainly Jewel's intention. Same goes for songs like Jesus Loves You. She leaves it open for you to guess what she's saying. I think the same applies to Do You Want To Play. Actually that song just confuses me in general. If anybody has any idea of what she's trying to say in the lyrics to that I'd love to hear it. That's my two cents. I actually set my VCR right for once, and got a nice little surprise upon getting home when I remembered it was on this morning.. She looked really nice.. I've thought she's looked beautiful at all of the recent TV appearances.. The vintage/rock tops, designer jeans, messy hair.. It's too bad for all of you people who don't like it because I'm enjoying the look a lot =) Standing Still sounded really good.. Like Steve said, the sound mix was a lot better; she wasn't drowned out like in some other recent appearances.. The interview was nice, although she and Rosie had the EXACT same conversation about Pink Panther-Pink Floyd confusion.. I think it was one of the later POY appearances (maybe Foolish Games).. Rosie asked her first album and Jewel explained about how it was Pink Floyd, but she thought it was Pink Panther.. And then Rosie goes into "See? That's how different we are! My first album was The Carpenters".. lol.. The questions about her segment was really funny, but I think a lot of people are going to see Jewel's sarcasm as egomania.. Oh well.. Well, that's it.. ET LOS ANGELES--In the three years since Jewel released 1998's "Spirit," the singer spent time on a Texas ranch, reflecting on her life as a musician and relishing time spent away from the industry. Songs from her recently released album "This Way," such as "Standing Still" are the product of this type of introspection, she said. "It's about the irony of how much a person travels in my job, and how it can really cause your emotional life to stand still," said Jewel of her new single. "Fame really tolerates a prolonged adolescence, and your fame and career can outgrow your ability to handle it. You can get really spoiled, and I wanted to get away from that and make sure I wasn't standing still." Recorded in Nashville, Jewel co-produced "This Way" with Dann Huff (Megadeth, Faith Hill), co-writing the song "Till We Run Out Of Road," with her boyfriend, rodeo star Ty Murray. Jewel credited her easy pace of one album every three years with keeping her on an even keel. "It became about hits and being famous, and it was really hard for me to stay impassioned about it," she said of the whirlwind of promotion surrounding the release of "Spirit." "More than anything, stepping back allowed me to get back to why I really like what I do. In addition to playing a series of Christmas radio package shows, Jewel will make a flurry of TV appearances, including a Wednesday (12/5) spot on "The Rosie O'Donnell Show," Dec. 15 on CBS' "Saturday Morning," Dec. 21 on "Larry King Live," Dec. 22 on "Weekend Today" and a pre-recorded "Today Show" set to run on Christmas Day. Jewel's headlining tour in support of "This Way," is expected to kick off in the spring of 2002.
