Now, this is just a theory, I have no clue what the actual case is, but she might have meant "live in the studio". Basically, the difference between recording "live" in a studio and normal studio recording is that everyone plays at once and is recorded at once, versus recording each instrument separately and then putting vocals on it. I've done both and "live" in the studio is what I prefer just because you get a more raw sound, but some songs are easier (and sometimes better) when you record them piece by piece. Of course, this could totally NOT be the case and she just misunderstood or is full of crap...either way, that's the only think I could think she meant and not be incorrectly answering. Lew www.coilback.com Date: Sun, 02 Dec 2001 17:31:40 -0600 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Subject: [EDA] This Way was LIVE?? I think it's interesting that Jewel says all the songs on This Way were recorded live...like Pieces Of You. What's up with that? They were done in a studio! We even saw footage of her IN the studio in the Break Me video on the CD...LOL. Other than the last 2 bonus tracks, it's a studio album. Do you think she misunderstood that question? I am also very glad that she admitted she SOLD OUT. :-) That should put to rest alot of debates on the list from time to time. I'll give her crecdit for at least being honest about it...but I wonder what she was thinking saying the CD was recorded live? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Dec 2001 01:42:34 -0600 From: "New World Warehouse" Subject: RE: [EDA] another thought on the guitar thing Actually that's a good point which might go with the "live in the studio" thing I was talking about. I play guitar and sing in my band and I know when I have to do both live, I can concentrate on one or the other as much. Although, I would probably just record the music live and then just go back and do the vocals (I hate not playing my guitar when we are recording). Just a thought. Lew www.coilback.com Date: Sun, 2 Dec 2001 23:03:17 EST From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: [EDA] another thought on the guitar thing I had another thought on the reason Jewel didn't play guitar on This Way, if she didn't that is. I know that she wanted to use the vocal takes that she did with the band in the studio (rather than re-doing them afterwards in a booth). If you play guitar AND sing in a band song the vocal takes tend to be less good because you're concentrating on the guitar as well and it's just not as strong .... I know a lot of people have said that it sounds like Jewel isn't hitting them, but I think a lot of it is the backing vocals. They are really, really, bad. I've had to overdub vocals in the studio before and harmonize with myself (which is really weird), so I kinda know harmonies...and man...they just were NOT there...icky. Anyway, past that, I'm gonna go with Derricks post as the most memorable part of that performance was the cleavage. Either way, still love Jewel...just feel sorry for the person trying to sing those backing vocals. I hope everybody had a good weekend. I've got a question for all you self-taught guitar players. What do you think was the easiest and most comprehensive method for you to learn? I've been getting really serious over the last week or so about learning to play. I've printed out some tabs to some of Jewel's songs and have been looking up the cords and trying to learn that way for now. Is there any advice somebody could give me? Thanks! I caught the last of it, but the part that I saw she talked mostly about the differences between this album and her last. She explained her motive to get back closer to her musical roots. She did mention that she and Ty wrote one song--and I can't remember which one-- together. It was her way of showing him what it was like to write a song. Mostly everything else we've heard on other interviews and at NashBash. Minh ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Dec 2001 23:48:12 EST From: SeanHooks@aol.com Subject: [EDA] VH1, dumbasses who need lives A quick take on the VH1 performance of "Standing Still." "Pretty average performance of a pretty average song. Don't know what the whole painter's smock/Kimono-era Madonna get-up was all about. She seemed "happy" enough, since that was a thread a while back. It's a fun little song, suited the event which was admitedly very Hollywood, look at us we're famous, kinda superficial. Although mad props to Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora for a sweet version of "Here Comes the Sun"(George Harrison). As for "Jesus Loves Me" and how I said it was non-controversial. Abortion is contoversial, this song is not. Plus, I was specifically responding to that Derrick kid who posted that he actually thought the song was so controversial we'd be seeing it as like the lead on evening entertainment news magazine shows like Entertainment Tonight or Access Hollywood. The song isn't gonna 'cause any riots, she isn't Marilyn Manson. He also made another really dumb comment showing his ignorant of music when he question Jewel's statement about the This Way album being recorded "live." He was like, um, duh, how like, um, is this album live, there's no clapping in the uh background like on Pieces oy You. If he had half a brain cell in his head he would know she meant "live in studio," meaning, as someone else immediately posted, that it was recorded all at once by the band, not individually and then mixed together later. I'm done rebuffing this kid, but let's get a few things out of the way: Shakira is a talentless Madonna/Selena poser. "Break Me" and "Serve the Ego," like them or not personally are not strong songs lyrically and the former is completely uncreative musically. And both are about the willing subjugation of women to men, a woman to a man, however you want to phrase it. If you like these songs, that's your opinion, that's fine. It's also my opinion to say that you then have bad taste. No big deal. Oh, and dude, get a hobby or something. Half the posts in the digests are from this derrick kid. HALF! Get a life dude. Let other people have a voice. As outspoken as I may be I only really post when I have something to comment on. Your deluge of posts is like verbal diarhea. Make a point and stop trying to dominate the digest with quantity, certainly not quality, of posts. You're obviously an attention-deprived kid who has no life. Step back from the computer and the Shakira music playing in the background once in a while and go outside and build a snowman or go surfing or something. So, I'm done with him. Thanks to everyone who emailed me telling me you find him annoying as well. So, at least we got to see a Jewel live perf. tonight, even if it was pretty by the book. I'm glad she is at least playing stuff like "Jesus Loves You" every now and then. As we head into the holidays perhaps there'll be some tour announcements soon and stuff like that. The album as is and talk show appearances only tell ya so much about she's really at musically right now. A tour, whether she be good, bad, or mediocre, is really what we all need to start having meaningful discussions and debate back to this list. Thanks for your time. People that go to award shows get all dressed up. Also, a close-up of her cleavage, to me, should be taken in jest. It was a funny thing, and anyone with a sense of humour should see that.
