I actually had forgotten about this but thanks to a fellow EDA, I was reminded. Back during the Spirit tour, Jewel's tour was sponsored, at least in part I believe, by Tommy Hilfiger. So let me get this straight...it's not ok to be in a GAP ad, but it's ok to have Hilfiger sponsor you? :-) Ok, opinions are fine, I respect them all, but if you're going to take a stand on an issue, at least be consistent about it. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2001 02:06:12 -0500 From: "Shannon L. OH! man!!! i might break down in tears if that will happen, but since jewel in my only favorite artist to exist, i guess i'll be happy to see them walking down the aisle... but hey!!! i'm also sexy and ty must think about this. Very good point. I don't think I can consider somebody a sell-out simply because they aren't anti-establishment. Or because they're mainstream. You go back to the 60's counterculture which was very anti-establishment in so many fashions. But people who grew up in the 60's made millions of dollars in the 80's and 90's. So did those people all of a sudden become "evil"? For me the term sell-out is used way too loosely. It's hip to call somebody a sell-out, I know. It's a term which is going to be around for a long time. To me a sell-out is anybody who isn't honest with themselves and what they believe in. Success and money can make someone compromise themselves for more success (fame) and money. Doesn't mean if you're rich and successful you sold out though. Only you know if you've "sold-out". If you don't care about the environment then don't put Sierra Club stickers all over your SUV so you look cool. If you're Sting (and if you are here Stingy Boy speak up) and you're comfortable using your music to sell Jaguars then more power to you. If you're Jewel and you got into the music business simply because you wanted as many people as possible to hear you sing, and that's what you're doing, then I can't consider you a sell-out. Wearing make-up, doing high profile media events, doing GAP commercials, signing with billion dollar record labels, etc. doesn't inherently make you a sell-out. In my book at least. I am curious as to your opinion, as well as the list's opinion as to what a "sell-out" is in your book. I would think that any event that makes an artist money is doing just that; making them money, which, no matter how much they love the music, is one of the main reasons they are making music in the first place. Period. So, if making Gap commercials for an large sum of cash, that also puts you in the vast public eye unlike appearances on MTV or other niche audience shows would, is "selling out" then I'd say more power to them. What's wrong with them spreading their coverage and getting recognition to an audience that might not have noticed them in the first place? Also, I have never believed that contributing to mainstream venues is "selling out" as what isn't mainstream anymore? That's a good question for you, actually. What do you NOT consider "selling out?" Certainly, if you think Jewel doing a Gap commercial is "selling out" then singing for a very commercialized ball game is "selling out" as well as playing large venues that all of the "pop" bands play, oh and having a record label that isn't a well-kept secret.... Just asking for thoughts... But all we fans would like is an autograph from our fave muso without getting a bitchy remark in reply. And, quite frankly, us fans did put Jewel where she is. If she doesn't like it, then she shouldn't have signed that record deal and just stuck to small gigs at Java Joes. She might be tired, but that's no excuse for acting like a bitch to her fans. In fact, it's no excuse for any of these so called 'stars'. *************** http://www.geocities.com/sarahvox ICQ: 131558324 "I was reading about what was going on in Afghanistan--the way women were being oppressed, the destruction of religious statues. And you're right... she should be down on her knees thanking her fans and giving up any private, personal time she has, to take pictures with fans and signing autographs cause without us she'd be nothing. And since she's famous, she is obligated to sign autographs and have pictures taken by people she doesn't even know, every single time she goes out into public. Jewel is an angel. In fact, it's no excuse for > any of these so called 'stars' Well when *I* come in contact with famous people, I don't go mobbing them for autohgraphs. Its downright rude. I was working one day, and the guy from Run DMC came into the store. His family lives in my town. So he came into the store with a couple of younger girls, I'm geussing sisters or cousins... all he came in for was some fried chicken from the deli. A trip for fried chicken took him well over 45 minutes, because he could hardly walk a foot without people following him asking for autographs. The whole store was a madhouse.... in what seemed like only a few seconds word got from the back (where the deli is), and spread across the whole store that Run DMC was in the store. So everyone ran to see. I felt so bad for him. Yes, he signed the autographs, but I could tell when he was checking out, that he just wanted to get out. He didn't look thrilled. I felt bad. He goes to the store in a small town in nowheresville, FL and gets mobbed. People seem to think that when someone is famous, the OWE us autographs and crap. But what WE owe them is respect, and right to privacy. No, I didn't ask him for his autograph. No, I will not be asking for Jewel's autograph if I ever see her in public. And I recently agreed to join a band, who apparantly has a big name from the 80s as their producer (he lives in my town, and no I'm not mentioning his name). If it is true that this guy is their producer, I will not be asking him for his autograph either. cymbie tree hugger - -- when night falls it's dawn one must reach for. - -a. camus . ------------------------------ Date: 28 Nov 2001 15:21:27 -0000 From: maggan81@ngo.as Subject: [EDA] A not so good review of This Way from E! I found this review on eonline's page: Jewel: This Way C+ Sounds as if This Way isn't the way to go for Jewel. Her new disc is short on the kind of sweet 'n' simple coffeehouse ditties that made the Alaskan-born folksinger a fan favorite. Instead, she plays around with rock-ready guitars and studio special effects that only complicate her poetic pop product. Jewel's Janis Joplin impersonation falls short on "Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone," and her dash of country twang on "Everybody Needs Someone Sometime" is better left in the barn. She still has a striking voice, and a simpler Jewel does shine on "I Won't Walk Away" and "Break Me." But it's not enough to save this muddled effort. http://www.eonline.com/Reviews/Facts/Music/RevID/0,1107,2517,00.html */Marcus Ngo - -- Get your firstname@lastname email for FREE at http://Nameplanet.com/?su ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V6 #623 ***************************
