On Z100 this morning they were discussing JingleBall, and the performers. When they got to Jewel, someone said I hope she's not a bitch this year. The host said with Jewel you take her as you get her, you have to hope she's in a good mood, cause if she's not....(and someone said she rarely is) They then told a story about her last appearance, where a staffer was a big fan and wanted a picture with her, she apparently replied "If we're going to do this, let's just get it F'ing over with so I can leave...." Guess Jewel has somewhat of a rep. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2001 10:54:47 -0500 From: "Jenni Hayter" Subject: Re: [EDA] NJC: Dashboard Confessional I absolutely 100% agree! Weelll..... Hehehehe you silly people. Emo stands for "Emotional Punk". Basically it's punky music/people who are singing about getting their heart broken and about emotional issues, as opposed to a Blink 182 punk which is just fun, without much depth. (I'm not Blink 182 bashing, I love them) But check out the following bands for emo: The Get Up Kids Dashboard Confessional Jimmy Eat World (although lately their getting more mainstream) Further Seems Forever The Juliana Therory Sunny Day Real Estate Hey Mercedes, etc..... Subject: [EDA] SS & Dawson's Creek Last night while watching the WB...there was a commercial that came on advertising an upcoming episode of Dawson's Creek. And in the background they were playing Standing Still. Hmm. I guess my prediction (yet another) was true afterall. It IS a Dawson's Creek song! LOL How funny. I keep thinking about that song by Paula Cole called "I Don't Wanna Wait", or something like that. They wore it out as the old theme song...so much that one year on the MTV Movie Awards there was this skit with James Vanderbeek and someone else...maybe it was Katie as well....in a bedroom, with that music playing in the background...then you see Samuel Jackson climb through Katie's window (after James already had) and smashes their radio to pieces. It was one of the funniest things I had seen on that awards show in some time. Samuel was hosting it that year. I thought that was great. Haven't heard that song too much since then...wonder why? :-) Anyway, I guess Standing Still will be one of "those" songs pretty soon...oh well...I mean, when you make a song that sounds so radio and TV show friendly as that one does, it's only a matter of time I guess. But I mean, for it to be on Dawson's Creek, that's like the ultimate insult. That's the show people always reference when talking about how much of a sellout a certain song is...or rather how commercialized it is. Needless to say, I was laughing pretty hard when I heard that last night. By the way, Michelle Branch was a guest on a show last night as a "what's next" artist...I thought that was cool for her to be in that category after being around such a short amout of time. She was in good company too, with people like Alicia Keyes. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2001 09:34:40 -0800 (PST) From: Joe Eggleston Subject: Re: [EDA] Gap ads, selling boots, bad taste in music on this list All I can say is that I too would be willing to part wit me precious shillings for a chance to hear me girl sing "House of the Rising Sun." Michelle said this has always been her theory...not to have a back up plan. Ever since she decided this is what she wanted to do with her life...which was many years ago. She started playing guitar at age 14...this was before Jewel wrote that book, or any books for that matter. So she couldn't have read this anywhere in 1997, even if she bought the books since then. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2001 11:57:06 -0600 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Subject: RE: [EDA] This Way sales These are very interesting results. The most being that Sean's referenced "cheesy a$$ rock band" Creed outsold Jewel and Garth both in their debut week...haha. I can't believe that Creed did this well honestly. Seeing that Garth only sold just over 450k his first week. It's pretty amazing. I thought it was just the economy now, but evidently not. Britney even sold more (or darn close) this week than she did compared to her sales a week ago. Also with Christmas getting closer and having just finished the busiest shopping weekend of the year, that could be some of it as well. Seems like every artist would aim for a Tuesday before Thanksgiving release each year...haha. Seeing that Jewel's sales were cut in half, or just over that....and this being the busiest shopping weekend so far, things don't look very good for the future of This Way. Unless she comes out with Serve The Ego for her 2nd single. :-) She had the largest drop of all the top 20 albums. I can't believe that UTV Now CD went from 26 *up* to 7. I guess just from the holiday season, that being a XMAS CD. It appears that Linkin Park (Sean's referenced outdated rap/metal 10-years-in the-past-band) is holding strong just outside the top 10. Nickelback as well. Both outselling Jewel in only her 2nd week, many many many weeks (I think maybe close to a year for Linkin Park) after *their* CD's were released. * Maybe* it's just the lack of marketing...lol.
