WHO IS THAT SULTRY young woman kicking out the jams on "Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone"? That siren whose gauzy voice - as seductive as Madonna's, as ripe and full of mystery as Joni Mitchell's -- wraps itself around the exotic snake-carmer melody of "Serve the Ego"? This is a brand-new Jewel. She's more mature, self-- assured and full of surprises. The 27-year-old singer displays lyrical depth and musical daring, coming across as coquettish on "Do You Want to Play?," sensual on "Cleveland" and socially aware on "Jesus Loves You." This Way is a richly crafted set of songs carried by avoice that has come into its own. PARKE PUTERBAUGH * * * 1/2 Jewel reaches a sparkling pinnacle ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 11:33:25 -0500 From: "Connell, Michael P" Subject: [EDA] USA Today review of This Way Jewel, This Way (*** out of four) If there were an award given for most improved singer/songwriter, this year's trophy would go to Jewel, who on her third CD emerges as a more mature, candid and intuitive artist. Having finally figured out that coyness and earnestness don't mix, the sweet-voiced minstrel offers graceful folk-pop tunes that are at once less affected and less naive in their social, sexual and spiritual musings. The buoyant single Standing Still and the witty, wistful Jesus Loves You reveal a newly confident sense of songcraft, while on tracks such as The New Wild West and Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone, Jewel's singing sounds more authoritative. There are moments when her delivery seems self-conscious or mannered, but generally, This Way finds Jewel moving in the right direction. - Elysa Gardner ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 12:12:19 -0500 (EST) From: fjjordao@wnetrj.com.br Subject: [EDA] Video from MTV.com Dear Hi at jewel@smoe.org, You have been sent the MTV.com video by fabiojj at fjjordao@wnetrj.com.br: "." I feel bad about saying jokes like that sometimes... why do we do it...you know why we do that? Do you know why we tell jokes about midgets? Because we don't fear them - that's why! Really, I like to tell jokes sometimes and on one occasion I was pondering about telling a black joke. You know, I wanted to be cutting edge and all, but I didn't tell it because there was a black man in the crowd - and I fear them. I'm not racial or anything. Don't get me wrong. Jewel made the top 10 coming in at #9 with 143 009 copies sold. Madonna, Rob Zombie, Shakira, & Garth Brooks all came in above her. Natalie Merchant, Paul McCartney & Radiohead were way below. Keep in mind the Hits sales data usually differs sometimes quite substantially from the Billboard data (ie - Hits reported that Spirit sold 210 000 copies in it's first week when it was closer to 350 000). The difference between position 5 and position 9 was approximately 15 000 copies... so there is a chance that Jewel will be 8, 7, 6 or 5 on the Billboard charts. There is also a chance she won't be in the Top 10 on Billboard's chart, so prepare for that - although I doubt it. These sales are decent if not spectacular. It's a little less than half what Spirit earned in it's first week. Keep in mind Garth Brooks also lost more than half of his sales (from the double live album that debuted in the same week as Spirit 3 years ago)... as did Britney with her latest effort. So Jewel is pretty much on par with the music industry given the state of the economy. Also, the fact that Hands was a much bigger hit at the time of Spirit's release than Standing Still is now makes a big difference. Hopefully Standing Still will continue to gain momentum and the album will gain momentum also. Another thing to note - this was an EXTREMELY competitive week. Britney's second week, combined with Garth Brooks, Shakira, Rob Zombie and Madonna is insane. If Jewel had of come out a few weeks ago she would've been Top 5 for SURE.. and perhaps even Number 1 given the fact that less competition usually means more sales for one person. The big test will be whether or not she can hold on. Chances are she'll drop out of the Top 10 next week (this week's releases include Creed, Pink and Kid Rock)... but hopefully she can hold on and ride the christmas wave, instead of getting lost (ala Lenny Kravitz). The goal is to remain a constant performer for as long as possible (ie - Pieces of You)... We'll see how it goes. When the Billboard figures are released (tomorrow I think) I'll let you know. Steve ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 17:35:31 +0100 From: "Tom Hall" Subject: [EDA] This Way Well I finally got This Way after some credit card-related fiascos at play247.com - got Natalie Merchant's too but I'm gonna write about Jewel of course... Overall, the album is really good. It's an improvement on Spirit, and it's too different to Pieces Of You to really compare. But it's good :). I like the way she's allowed her personality to shine through really well on this one. The quirky lyrics, slip-ups in the live tracks and stuff and the way she lets her voice go crazy at times. That's the main thing that Spirit lacked, even though it way good in its own way. It was a bit restrained. But this definitely isn't :). Another thing - the drums! Wow, she's really gone for some interesting beats on this, I think, instrumentally, that's what made the album really interesting. The variety in drum beats. And Sean was completely right in saying that the second 'half' of the album was incredible. OK, track by track: Standing Still - I like it a lot. It's just refreshing to hear something that sounds so upbeat from Jewel. And the fact that the lyrics are really *not* upbeat, really adds to it. It makes it seem a bit clever, even though it's quite a simple song. Jesus Loves You - The lyrics really make this song. They're funny and clever, and it's good that the public gets to see humourous Jewel :). And I love the way the verses build up to bring in all of the instruments at the end. Everybody Needs Someone Sometime - I love these lyrics too, in a different way. These are just playful and simple, they're not all that clever. But I love the storytelling in them - Spivy Leeks, Joe, Sister Mary, etc. And the beat, the way it's so line dance, just makes it cool. Because you know she'd get laughed off commercial radio, but it still sounds so good :). Break Me - You can tell this one was produced by the same guy who produced Faith Hill. Not sure if it's a bad thing. But this has become a bit commercial, and I could see it becoming a hit single definitely. I still love it, but in a completely different way to the acoustic version. I'm glad it's not acoustic and tacked on as a 'bonus track' though. Do You Want To Play? - Sparkly Jewel in full force here. It's so strange to hear Jewel like this. DYWTP used to be a sort of rock track, but I could imagine Jewel singing this covered in glitter and smiling sweetly at the camera. Or something :). It's just a strange take on the original, and the only track where I wish she'd left it how it was. The spontanaity of the 'inarticulate' line is gone, it just fits in and sounds sweet, where before it sounded agressive and almost went into the chorus. I was dissapointed with this, but I have no problem listening to this as it is. I love it still :) But it's just not how it used to be. Til We Run Out Of Road - This is where the album starts to get ambient. The beginning of this track is great, the little sounds at the intro and the quietness, before the beat kicks in and it gets really interesting :). Good song, and I love the 'Lou' reference because it just gives it a bit of reality. Ty's a good influence, I think! Serve The Ego - Beats, beats, beats. Loving this song. I've liked it since I first heard it, but after lots of listens I'm really digging those indian drums :). And the lyrics are brilliantly sarcastic. They make me smile, especially the way she punctuates the irony by pronouncing every letter. And I love the distortion at the beginning. Ambience again! This Way - One of the most un-creative songs on the album, both musically and lyrically. Musically, it sounds a lot like U2's Walk On, which is not a bad thing, but it just doesn't sound like it's Jewel's. Lyrically, it's just a bit trite. I do like it, I like how she sings it and I like the feel (hey, I like U2)... It's just not a stand-out track for me. Cleveland - I'd never actually heard this before, surprisingly, so it was fun to listen to it for the first time. Love the lyrics - classic Jewel with a country-ish twist. Love the way it sounds very country-ish too, with the slide guitar and all. It's great to see how she can pull off all of these sounds in the studio, as well as live. I Won't Walk Away - again, the beat! Cool. Lyrically, I love the verses but I'm not too keen on the chorus. It's sweet though, which is what I think she was aiming for. Again it's ambient, which I love. Could very easily be a single, too. Anyone else think her voice sounds a bit like Nedra's on this one? Love Me Just Leave Me Alone - she's done a classic on her album without ruining it! yes! I love the slide guitar intro, because it's such a change. I was just shocked by it, I thought I'd skipped a track, til she started singing. It wouldn't sound out of place on the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack :). Of course, once it kicks in it's the same old LMJLMA, which is great. She's kept it interesting for all the people who collect angelfood, but not changed it too much for us to call it a massacre. And as for the minions/midgets debate, I actually think minions fits better. Why would anyone have a bunch of midgets? A lot of people can have minions... Some people would call us Jewel's minions... I just can't see why anyone would have a lot of midgets... Anyone want to explain? The New Wild West - What can I say? Jewel has surpassed herself with this song. The lyrics are brilliant - political, clever and very fitting at this time. I've been talking about ambience and beats all the way through this... WOW. This is the most interesting song, instrumentally, to listen to. It wouldn't sound out of place on a Faithless album or something. I wish she'd experimented with drums on more of the tracks, because what she's done with this is just incredible. She's turned it from a mediocre live track (great lyrics, lacking instrumentation) to the standout track on the album! I don't have enough praise for this song. Grey Matter - The one big problem with this album is that these two incredible live tracks look like they're added on as an after thought, with their 'bonus track' prefix and the way they're just tacked on at the end of the album. They deserve more than that, because for one, Grey Matter just sounds incredible on here. The lyrics are Jewel at her best, and I love the melody of the chorus. A classic, and it's untouched, which makes me so happy :) Sometimes It Be That Way - Same here, apart from the fact that she missed a verse. I really miss the St Petersburg part :(. But it's great to be able to hear this in all its glory... And I just love the beginning where the good ol' EDAs have to prompt Jewel. And the way she just says 'thankyou' as soon as 'night' is shouted. This is the one part of the album that really made me just grin inanely for the rest of the song. A great way to end an album that is going to be played over and over again by me. OK, well that's my review if anyone cared... He's my order of the best tracks: 1, The New Wild West 2. Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone 3. Sometimes It Be That Way 4. Serve The Ego 5. Grey Matter 6. Cleveland 7. Everybody Needs Someone Sometime 8. Til We Run Out Of Road 9. Jesus Loves You 10. I Won't Walk Away 11. Break Me (would be at the top if it were acoustic) 12. Standing Still 13. This Way 14. Do You Want To Play?
