So I guess Jewel's been on Rick Dees' Top 40 Countdown for two weeks now. Last week, she debuted at 37 and has moved up to 34. Hopefully she'll go higher. Rick Dees' Top 40 Countdown, for those who don't know, is syndicated and plays on pop stations. He's the head honcho of KIIS FM here in LA and we need support from DJs like him. As we examine the firmament for the brightest shining stars today we find Jewel and Jennifer Lopez shining brightest in the late-twenties group and Britney, Mandy and Christina shining brightest in the teen group. Now, at this time, it looks like in a race between Christina and Britney Christina would cross the finish line before Britney took the first step in the race. However things may not stay that way for ever.I remember that back in the mid 80s I reckoned that Madonna was singing about life as a mature woman while Cyndi Lauper was merely playing with her toys as a teenager would. However 5-6 years later I grew to (merely) respect Madonna, while growing as close to being in love with Cyndi as one can get without staying awake all night dreaming about his unrecquitted love and that has stayed the same for the last 10 years. Thus, from my perspective, I'd say Britney still has a few surprises up her sleeve.I am planning to follow closely all the 5 singers I've mentioned in the first sentence, as I currently like 'em all.Incidentally, of the 5 of them I'm not in any mailing list (about them) other than this one, and that position has only been made stronger by Jewel's last offering, which, while wholly different than what I would expect from her, is not any less gorgeous than her mythological freshman offering. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Nov 2001 11:51:47 +1300 From: "Stace" Subject: [EDA] re: pointless Hahaha... that's hillarious. In terms of "radio" fans I know that a lot of people like it - you should see how many "personal internet charts" it's on. Standing Still is the kind of single that's known as a "slow burner". It's going to take a while, but the song will be a hit. I don't think Atlantic should give up on it yet - it hasn't peaked (meaning it's still increasing substantially in spins weekly), and it's starting to make very significant spin increases at pop radio just as of this week. I think they waited too long to release Down So Long because Hands was such a hit that it became so overplayed. If they had of released Down So Long while Hands was at it's peak, then people probably wouldn't have gotten so SICK of Hands and Jewel-backlash wouldn't have occurred. But in the case of Standing Still, it's still growing and has a long way to go and I think they should wait for it to play out... because it has the potential to be a Hands-size smash hit. This one brings back memories for me... and i had to put in my little story. If you REALLY want to hear an orgasm-like scream from Jewel - check out the Woodstock '99 performance of "Down So Long" (5.42). At around 4.57 into the song... now there a Jewel orgasm-like scream if ever i heard one: all these consecutive oohs and aahs and breathy sounds until Jewel finally climaxes with an almighty scream. Go listen if you have it, or download it, it'll give you a laugh! Its funny, i must have heard this performance at least 20 times before "The Orgasm" (as it has come to be known amongst my friends) was pointed out to me. It was a summer road trip around December last year. I was in the car with two of my female friends, who are also Jewel fans. We were listening to Woodstock on the drive back home. I remember my friend Mary suddenly screaming "Oh my god! The Orgasm!!". She turned the volume way up just as Jewel launched into her scream - and we all sang along and screamed our lungs out. Have a listen to the song, and just imagine it - 3 females screaming "ooh, a-oh, a-eh, a-oh, a-eh, a-oh, a-eh, a-ohhhhhhhhhhhhh!" at the top of their voices along with Jewel.... hahaha. Fun times. Suffice to say, the song has never been the same since ;) Stace xxoo ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Nov 2001 17:25:49 -0700 (MST) From: Laurel Subject: Re: [EDA] Re: single No! If they LET standing still run it's course on Pop radio and become a hit (which it definitely could do), it'll bode well for them in the future... because she'll have proved herself at pop radio and they won't be so hesitant to play the next single when it's released. Also, dywtp is more in sync with the style of pop radio now.. so it wouldn't be such a struggle. if they go right to dywtp NOW it'll just be another uphill battle - and half the work has already been done with Standing Still.
