Not yet. Want to give it another listen before I compose my review. Quick Leno impression for you though, the band is CHEESY. She continues to surround her self with the biggest bunch of studio hack cheeseballs around(what happened to when you used to do late night gigs with Flea and the guys from Counting Crows?). But other than the cheesy band, the drummer excepted possibly, the Leno version of Standing Still was OK, it's not a song that is gonna be all that different live from the album anyway. Quick thought of This Way though. If this were an album, Side 2 would definitely be better. And the songs I already know well sound pretty good. Full review still to come. Just wondering? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Nov 2001 02:52:37 -0600 From: "New World Warehouse" Subject: [EDA] The "no one cares about" review from Lew Okay...here's my take on This Way...like you aren't sick of reading all this already...well if you are really that bored read away. I'm writing this as I listen to each song: Standing Still - pretty good choice for a first single...enough "old Jewel" that it doesn't alienate any old fans while trying to add a little bit of commercial sound to it to make it go down easier for the newbies Jesus Loves You - I was pretty impressed with this one at Nashbash. Very close to POY Jewel in attitude, but just a little more production, which I have no problem with. Everybody Needs Someone Sometime - I can see the country thing...it's mainly that pedal steel in the back. Very Reba sounding. Not too bad, not gonna be my one of my favorites though. Break Me - trying to get used to the string section, but it's always hard to get used to a new version of something you've heard so many times a certain way. I think it's a great rendition though. Do you Want To Play ? - I've always thought this was a catchy number from when I heard it on my Storytellers CD. I'm not too sure about the way she sings the chorus now. I like the little break down part and the extra long pause. I think this would make a decent single. Till We Run Out of Road - Dunno what to say...just doesn't do it for me. Have a feeling this one is gonna feel the next track button on my CD player a lot Serve The Ego - I like what she did with this one. I like the subtle little extra overdriven guitar, it adds a good punch to it. Maybe a good third single just because it's very different to most of her stuff. A lot of people would need to be warmed up first with a couple of other tracks. One of my favs on the CD. This Way - Hmmm...not great, not bad. Can't say I think it would be a great single, but it could go somewhere. I just think there are stronger songs on the album than this one. Little too generic "love song" Cleveland - Another sorta country feeling with a pop beat. Never been crazy about this one. Just can't get into the groove on it. I Won't Walk Away - The beginning almost feels like a remix of Serve The Ego. Love Me Just Leave Me Alone - Hmmm...don't know about that blues intro. It's kinda cool, but I sorta like the get up and go feel she used to do. Can't say that is has the same radio play value that her past versions had. Maybe she'll go back to the old way and re-record it for a single if she releases it. The New Wild West - one of my favorite new songs she played at NashBash. I do like the produced version a bit better than the solo acoustic one. It has more feel to it. Grey Matter - Jeeze that's a lot of echo. If that's the Nashbash version, the venue didn't sound that bouncy reverb wise. I think maybe she was catching some slapback on the mic. They probably should've put a little more fabric on the wall or a rug on the floor, wherever it's coming from. It does give it a sorta spooky solitary sound to it though, so that's kinda cool. Sometimes It Be That Way - I laughed so hard when I first heard it. I remember that blank look Jewel gave them when she couldn't remember the first lyrics. I think that's pretty cool because I have the damnedest time trying to remember lyrics when I perform as well. I think it has to do a lot with songwriters who write a lot of crap at once. I noticed in some old Beatles performances John Lennon had the same problems. I guess that's not bad company to be with. Now, this doesn't have as much echo so that leads me to believe Grey Matter and SIBTW were two different venues. This one was definitely NashBash though. It was worth two drives from Dallas...although Jewel better be nice to me next time ;-) Well there you go...if anyone just actually read all of this...I'm impressed or I feel sorry for you...one of the two. I prepared myself for disappointment, but in no way am I disappointed. I can't wait for the tour! and BTW, IMO, I dont think this album is as 'country' as some claim. The One - very generic love ballad...even the chorus changes are familiar, but catchy. Has a power ballad feel. Ready For Good Times - dance to it...it's a club song Fool - if you are an Alanis Morrissette fan, you'd like this one Poem to a Horse - um...interesting lyrics Eyes Like Yours - cool Indian feel...very cool Suerte - the spanish version of Whenever, Wherever...I love how strong her voice is in this version...wish I knew Spanish better Anyway, this is just quick highlights for anyone who might be interested in her. I think she has a lot of talent and sounds a lot like a spanish Jewel in her unplugged stuff. This album is best described as Alanis Morrissette with Madonna's band. It was the perfect time because of the release of This Way !!! I'm in France so no one in my school have heard about Jewel, not even my teacher !!!! I talked about her life, about her discography. and I showed the commercial for Bits and Baubles where Jewel yodels !! I had to present the official website too and at the end I played the Standing Still video on a big screen !!!!!! I really had fun doing that !!! The Cd player on the computer was broken so I couldn't make them listen to more songs. But it was cool though, and everyone was asking questions at the end. So I've done my job for today : I made 20 people aware that Jewel was the best artist of the moment and that they had to buy the new CD !!!!! bye Emilie ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Nov 2001 12:47:38 +0100 From: "Emilie Bozon" Subject: RE: [EDA] screen saver only on NT? Jewel "This Way" Atlantic 3 stars out of 4 SHE DID IT HER 'WAY' Jewel stumbles but recovers nicely in latest outing Jewel Kilcher's first non-holiday album in three years, "This Way," begins promisingly. "Standing Still," the buoyant single you've probably already heard, is more sophisticated than either "Who Will Save Your Soul" or "You Were Meant for Me"---both hits off of "Pieces of You," the 13-million-selling debut album Jewel's label czars want her to live up to. The folkier "Jesus Loves You" follows, with its piquant reflections on pop salvation and self-improvement. Then Jewel lapses into some familiar tendencies: the too-kittenish sopranos; the overacted talk/sing swagger; the obvious sentiments that might have been overflow poems from "A Night Without Armor." Hope begins to fade, in spite of thoughtful production by Jewel herself and Dann Huff, and a country-rock disposition that conveys more of her personality than austere folk-pop ever did. Happily, we discover the gem in the jewel case. "The New Wild West," a biting commentary on Western images (not to mention today's world situation) seen through discerning, new-millennium eyes, may be the best lyrics Jewel has yet written, and certainly recorded. The songs gravity and drama are considerable, and the crystal sweetness of Jewel's vocal does not diminish that gravity and drama. She is one with the stirring ballad, and "This Way" at once rises above its perfections. Noteworthy, too, are "Serve the Ego," which finds Jewel singing in sublime mid-register, and the glam-romance of "I Won't Walk Away."
