Subject: [EDA] the new DVD ? ..will be in stores when? I thought it was due to be released the same day as the CD. I haven't seen it in any stores yet though. Also, does anyone know how to access the enhanced portion of the CD? I've tried it in a CD-ROM drive and all it lists when I go into windows explorer are the 14 audio tracks in cda format. Nothing else. Has anyone else had any troubles with this? Most CD's I can go in and view all the files, like if there's any .exe files, etc. For some reason the drive isn't seeing anything else though. It is the same one as in "His Pleasure Is My Pain" (where I think it was used to better effect): "Are you only half alive or have you always been this inarticulate". It comes from the volume of Anais Nin's diaries published (and made into a film) as "Henry and June" (Henry being Henry Miller, as in "Morning Song"). Take care, Barry Howarth ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Nov 2001 00:29:16 +1100 From: "Daniel Duwe" Subject: [EDA] another review, this time from aus Hey angels, Well, as I said the other day I brought my copy of "This Way" on the 12th here in Aus. I've had a chance to listen to it now a few times, even though today some relic of a violin player on the bus was disturbing me while listening to Jewel's CD ;) you gotta love the qualities of public transport, something new everyday :) Anyways, before I read my full mailbox of everyone's review I'll throw my own review in, just so I'm not persuaded to think differently by any of you, and this review is from someone who's hasn't listened to that much of Jewel's live stuff ;) Ok, enough talk, let's begin.... Standing Still - Well, I have to admit I was a bit weary of this song the first time I heard it, but it has grown on me now. Very poppy, you can definitely get dancing to it and jumpin' around; I'd like it better if she made it a bit rockier. I wonder what it would sound like with an electric guitar. Jesus Loves You - I like the beginning of this song, then it sort of goes heavier, her voice doesn't sound all to good when she's saying "will you give me a second chance", this bit kinda ruins the song for me. Everybody Needs Someone Sometimes - First time I've heard this, it is definitely country like. I kinda don't like too much country; this is probably getting on the limit. I've listened to this one a few more times just to see if I would like it, I don't really like it that much. Break Me - This version I love, maybe a little less than the acoustic versions she was doing when she was here on the promo tour (but I'm a sucker for acoustic love songs), but the array of instruments work well together, and the timing of when their played is great. Do You Want To Play? - I really enjoyed this song from the first time I heard it (and it was my first time). I can really see this as a great song at her concerts when and if she tours (which I hope she does). The little guitar solo works in well and the pause during the song does also. I can definitely see myself skipping around to the heavier parts just like Dido's bass player. Great song... Till We Run Out of Road - First time I heard it I was undecided, but the next time I made sure to listen to it more carefully and I really enjoyed it. I think this song needs a big electric guitar solo in it just like "Purple Rain" by Prince, not the same style of course ;) but something to match the song somewhere near the end of the song, maybe after the slow bit or something, but I'm sure it can fit in somewhere well. Serve the Ego - Hmmm, each time I listen to it I go a different way. It's the first time I've ever heard this song. I can't really comment on this one yet. This Way - Nice, sweet, romantic type of gushy, gushy song, I like it. I think it's a little different from all the other songs. But I did here Jewel say that she likes the album because each song is different from the next. I like the little bit at the end for a few seconds with just her voice and the guitar. Cleveland - The usual "You're in Cleveland today". I don't mind this version, but I've only heard 2 versions so not much else to go on. I Won't Walk Away - Another first timer. I enjoyed it. Soft, slow, a little over produced possibly. I think there could be a better way to do this song. LMJLMA - One of my favourite songs. I like this version. Seems a little slower at the start than usual, I think they should remove the little phone ring from the chorus, I was at work listening to it and took of my headphones cause I thought my phone was ringing. I have the version where she stops and says "I want Bill to play on this", I like this version better, and it's about a minute longer as well. The New Wild West - I didn't like this song all too much. Maybe it will just take a few more listens before I start liking it. Some parts of it I did enjoy. It's one that will take time to grow on me... LIVE TRACKS Grey Matter - Nice solo song, another first time for me hearing this song. This live track has good acoustics I enjoyed it. Jewel and a guitar, nothing better than that. SIBTW - One of my favourite songs. I listened to another faster live version following the album version. Slow or fast I still love this song. Long Slow Slide - It was on the aussie single release and it's the same on the album. I wish she had of put something different on there eg "Satellite, Carnivore". I guess it was for all those people you would just buy the album and not the single. Anyways, it's still a good song and of course, another first time hearing this one. What was missed that I would like on the album - Well I wish "Don't trust your pink fleshy heart to a Carnivore" was on their, more as a live track, interesting to see how it would come out as an album track also. Also I miss Satellite; I love this song, also interesting to think how this would come out as well on the album. Ok now for my rating of what I think is the great to the good, there are no bad songs. I won't include the live bonus songs. 1. Break Me 2. Do You Want To Play? 3. Love Me Just Leave Me Alone 4. Till' We Run Out of Road 5. Standing Still 6. This Way 7. Jesus Loves You 8. Cleveland 9. I Won't Walk Away 10. Serve the Ego 11. The New Wild West 12. Everyone Needs Someone Sometimes I've also had a chance to look at the CD. It's all kinda along the same lines as the album's book. All either black & white or blue & black. Some colour photos would have been nice to see. The video is interesting; I would have more enjoyed a live song video clip myself. I'm sticking with my Michelle Branch wallpaper ;) and the screen saver was not working, I'm probably missing some VB dll or something, their always adding new s**t. The CD booklet has the same pics as the enhanced CD does, they look good. I wish they made a booklet rather than this rubix fold out thing which you can never get folded back the same ;) Overall I do think it's equal to POY, not in style obviously, but in my overall enjoyment of the album. I still love listening to POY, haven't listened to Spirit in a while now though. I would have to say all 3 albums are different, all in good ways. I hope you all enjoy "This Way" I certainly have. Thanks for listening Take Care Daniel "There is a paradise that can be found... A better life to bring us round... And all we really need to do... Is see the world like lover's do. Nice to see ya back Derrick, the list was missing some controversy ;) Anyways, ya have to listen to him here, Michelle Branch is awesome. If you're sick of listening to "Everywhere", I can't see how you could be though, try this acoustic version, it sounds great http://www.michellebranch.com/med/thespiritroom/everywhereacc.mp (the link has 3 at the end of it but I can't put it without the post being rejected so you'll have to do the work ;) it is on the Maverick site, so it's not illegal or anything) I haven't seen the buffy show yet (not that I watch buffy also), I have one of my mad "buffy" fan friends getting it for me, but I believe every word Derrick says about it. >PS...sure hope that's her next single, but for some reason I doubt it'll >be...unfortunately. I know there are several Michelle fans on the >list...if >any of you guys caught the show, let me know what you thought about it. :->) The next single, from what I've heard, will be "All You Wanted", Goodbye To You is a great song, but this one is just as good. Also if you want something new to listen to try Heather Bodell, she has a website at http://heatherbodell.cjb.net she competed in the Maverick records showcase and got through to one of the final rounds to win a chance to open for Michelle Branch at a concert she had at the Blind Pig a while back, but she just missed out. She's only 16 and has a lot of talent. Go to her page and take a listen to her songs, I have, I especially love "forever and always". Anyways, I'm sure you've had enough of me now. Keys, who will present an award at the ceremony January 9 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, is nominated for Favorite Female Artist and Favorite New Artist in both the Pop/Rock and Soul/R&B categories, along with Favorite Soul/R&B Album for Songs in A Minor. "Alicia is great. She deserves it," Jewel said after announcing Keys' nominations. "It's nice to see people who write their own stuff doing well. I guess it's just a College Network deal, anyway, I thought I heard music on there later so I looked up and the Standing Still video was on! You couldn't really hear it too well, but that's some pretty good exposure to us college folk. Looks like she's been rising ever since the single came out, and now she's hit the Top 50... after 3 weeks. As far as US sales go... an article I found on the net suggests that Garth Brooks is gonna be on top (with sales of around 600 000), followed by Britney. Shakira and Rob Zombie will follow with sales of around 200 000... they didn't mention Jewel, Madonna, or Paul McCartney.. but I'm guessing Jewel'll be somewhere on their tales with 175 000-200 000... that's a pure guess.. and I could be wrong. Those figures are never that accurate either, because they're based entirely on one day sales.. and the sales may fluctuate throughout the week. I'll let you know if i find anything actually concrete. we'll know by monday what the exact figures are. Also - Jewel re-entered the Top 20 spin increase chart at CHR/POP today. Often when that happens radio just catches on and the spin increases just get higher and higher (happened with Shakira and the calling last week)... but it could be just a fluke.. so keep calling local stations and hopefully she'll start to shoot up the chart.
