Subject: [EDA] Leno schmeno I KNEW that was a drum machine! :-) I'm with ya Eric...our ears don't lie. The very first time I heard SS I knew it was a drum machine at the beginning, and later towards the middle...contrary to what most people were saying. I'm sure when Jewel talked about the "real" drums being on that song in that interview she did, she was referring to the other parts...the majority of the song maybe. That would make sense I guess. Looked like ole Steve (George) on the keys...not sure if it was though...of course it's been over a year and a half since I last saw him. Don't know what to make of the others. The bass player seemed cheesy to me...I liked Tony alot better. Seemed like he had more "soul". That lead guitar player didn't really match with the others. He played well, just seemed a bit out of place. The drummer seemed awfully young...and the other guitar player...I don't know. You'd never know some of those guys were in a band with Jewel if you saw them in public. I thought the song sounded well overall. Of course with the keyboards and all the electronics, it's rather hard to make it sound "bad". Jewel sang ok I guess, but I've never really cared much for that scratchy thing she does with her voice at times. It works ok for Melissa, but not Jewel, at least not to me. No interview, of course. That's classic Leno fashion. I think there may be a better shot for at least a short interview when she does her Conan appearance next week. Too bad she doesn't come on Rosie's show...she's real good about giving the musical guests some interview time. When Michelle Branch was on there a few days ago, she got at least 3-4 minutes of seat time. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Nov 2001 01:05:23 -0600 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Subject: [EDA] the long-awaited review (exhale) Sorry Sean, beat ya to the punch! :-) (even though Mike wasn't on pins and needles waiting for MY review...hehe) By the way, anyone who can't stand to read even slightly "negative" comments related to Jewel, you may wanna just delete this e-mail right now...it's easy. One click. :-) For the others... I did wait until I had heard the CD all the way through twice before typing this. Ok, here we go! First off...I have no idea why Jewel said this wasn't going to be a country CD...it's sure pretty close to that. A whole lot more than it would be considered a "rock" CD. (I can definitely tell it was recorded in Nashville) Standing Still - nice little pop ditty, or is that ditty pop, or papa ditty? LOL The token pop single I guess. Jesus Loves You - Not at all what I was expecting. I didn't like this track at all. Probably won't listen to it again. Nice lyrics, just don't like the song. Everybody Needs Someone Sometime - I couldn't get these visions out of my head of Jewel and Garth Brooks doing this on stage as a duet. Maybe with the Dixie Chicks doing the backing vocals. Sounded an awful lot like contemporary country to me. Not a bad song if you like country, which I don't. Break Me - Always liked this song from the very first time I heard it live, also the first time she ever played it live. I think this made the 3rd (and 4th) times. :-) Nice song...produced alot. I still prefer the solo-acoustic version over this one. I think I've read where some others feel the same way. The solo version, like she did on Life 360 just seems to draw the listener (or viewer) in a little more...it's a bit more effective that way. I had a feeling I'd like this song...so no surprises yet. Do You Want to Play? - No. LOL Kept waiting for this song to go somewhere...it never did. Moving on... Till We Run Out of Road - I liked the beginning. The first 20 seconds or so had this cool Dido'ish feel to it. After that, I lost interest. Sounded too much like another country song to me also. It's fitting for the PBR CD I guess. Serve the Ego - Always like this song too. One of the better tracks on the CD. Although they could have done SO much more with this song. Cranked the guitars up more, made it alot more rocked out. So much potential was there. Oh well. Guess I'll settle for what we got. By the way, what's up with the first 10 seconds of this track? Interesting guitar distortion. This Way - I think I'll go the "other way". You're in Cleveland Today (this song's *real* title) - Now that I know (finally) that this is indeed the ole' fan fave...I can sleep at night. No, just kidding. Sounds very "smoothed over". I really like the older versions better. They had more "punch" to them. For lack of a better word. The steady 4/4 beat to this doesn't help it any. I liked the rhythm of the song when it was played live on the Spirit tour and on the older versions. Jewel could have added alot to this song simply by doing more with the vocal part. Another "oh well". Maybe in concert she'll do more with it. Serve the Ego - Oh wait, already discussed this song. I like what Jewel does with her voice towards the end. Almost gypsy-like. Interesting. (had to listen to it once more)...moving on now... I Won't Walk Away - Hmmm. Don't even know where to begin. Didn't really seem like a Jewel song. Love Me Just Leave Me Alone - Slide guitar. Anyone remember the 80's glam rock band Cinderella? hehe... j/k This is an oldie of which I've heard countless versions. So it's up against some stiff competition. As in, itself. Had I never heard this song before I'm sure I would have liked this version alot more. But, seeing as how I've heard some really excellent live versions of this song, it sort of deflates this CD produced version. Kudos for Jewel NOT holding back on the high vocal part. That's a plus. It's an ok track...but I just had really high (and probably unrealistic) expectations for this song. Makes one wonder how Carnivore would have sounded on an official CD. The New Wild West - Interesting song. They really got their money's worth off of all the electronic gadgets with this one. :-) I like the 3/4 timing. Here's another one that could have been really rocked out. I think it may grow some more on me...it's just different enough to justify a few more listenings. To my liking, it doesn't sound anything like country...I was really worried about this track too...with it's title. Maybe the 3rd or 4th best so far. Grey Matter - Another oldie. Hard to go wrong with solo-acoustic Jewel. The lack of production alone is enough to make this track good. Just like pretty much all of PoY was. I wish the acoustics were a little better in the venue this was recorded in. There's alot of "echo" in her voice. Seems like that could have been removed some...but maybe not. I guess they wanted to retain how it sounded if you were there. Sometimes It Be That Way - Vocals are much better on this one. Alot like PoY. If Jewel could have made a 14-track CD like this song (production-wise, acoustic, etc), it would have been another 10 million+ seller for sure. I couldn't find in the liner notes where these were recorded. I think I remember someone saying one was from the Nashville session. Just wondering which one it was. Well that's it. I must admit this is quite different from both Spirit and PoY. I guess about 1/2 the tracks are ok (to me). Some better than others. Similar to how Spirit was. Derrick ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Nov 2001 01:49:47 -0600 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Subject: [EDA] CD booklet I forgot to mention earlier... The photos in the CD booklet are nice. A couple are the best I've seen Jewel look in quite some time. The one with her guitar (1st fold out, right side) and the 3rd fold out (right side) are the best ones I think. The 4th fold out pic is ok too. The cover seems remarkably "simple". When I first saw the cover awhile back, I thought it was just a preliminary version, due to the simplicity. I guess they just wanted to keep things simple this go round. Once you got Jewel's photo, it would take about 5 minutes or less in photoshop to make the cover. I heard a few people are having problems with the enhanced portion of the CD working. If anyone else is, let me know. I'm beginning to think there's a glitch in some of the CD's. I'll be able to verify this tomorrow. Just curious as to what song the video is for, and how that version differs from it's audio counterpart. Derrick ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Nov 2001 00:12:24 -0800 From: "Elizabeth Nguyen" Subject: Re: [EDA] Jewel on Leno If only you knew the truth! Hehe, good observations. I, as well December, went to the taping. It was quite interesting too. We spent a lot of time in lines and well, we went through meeting a strange "late-nite show groupie" and well, I'll spare my emabarrassing antics ;) We got to see Jewel do SS twice! The first time, and then a second time because something was off I suppose. I don't really know what went wrong, but they had to do it again. It was funny, Jewel was all messing with the Leno people. When she had to do it again, she started to sing and just stopped and said ... "oops ... no, I'm kidding" "okay, let's do it again, this time for real." and she did this cute thing when the curtain was going down, Jewel kind bent down with it. The second time through, her singing seemed better. It was lovely. But I gotta say, even though it was fun, I don't think I'm cut out for this type of thing. It was so draining and took a lot of arrangements to do it. However, that groupie guy was so scary. He proudle told us "I've shaken Bob Barker's hand twice already. OH yeah, I've been to Hollywood Squares with Whoopi Goldberg (sp?), the Price is Right, Leno, Howie Mandel, etc. And he kept going on and on about the same darn thing. He was quite irritating. So yeah, back from the sidenote. Leno is a funny guy. He walks the walk as well as talk the talk. Hope everyone's having a great night. ~Elizabeth, the tennis-ball-whacking angel __________________________________________________ Eric wrote: I just got done watching Jewel perform SS on Jay Leno. It's nice to know that I wasn't hearing things and it is indeed a drum machine at the beginning of the song. Although I'm kind of surprised they used it live. It seemed like Jewel was a bit uncomfortable during the performance, but that's understandable with a new song. She was probably afraid she'd forget the words : ) Decent performance as a whole, though. ______________________________________________________ Thus conscience does make cowards of us all; And thus the native hue of resolution Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought - Shakespeare, "Hamlet" Perfect for the Jewel Kilcher Fan! Subject: [EDA] Good photo Has anyone else noticed the photo being used on the "Do You Want to Play?" t-shirt? It's also on the jewekjk activities page. I think that's the best photo I've seen of Jewel since sometime around 1997. Too bad they didn't include that as an 8x10. It would make for a great new edition to the signature photo series, but I think I remember reading that it was going to be discontinued once all the photos were sold..I believe through the 6th edition. That's too bad. In other news (I'll try this once more), has any one been able to purchase the revised Life Uncommon item (other than from jeweljk)? I know it was supposed to be released today according to jeweljk but have yet to find it in a store. If there's a certain store that's stocking it now, let us know. The ones I went to tonight didn't have it yet. Derrick ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Nov 2001 22:04:03 +1300 From: "Stace" Subject: [EDA] additional thoughts on This Way/ t-shirts Hey angels, So, does anyone NOT love the song "This Way"? Everyone seems to have said they really love it, and that it should be the next single... but i don't know. Isn't it just a little well, fluffy? I mean, it is a lovely and very sweet song - and i suppose its growing on me.... but its lyrics aren't the amazingly moving stuff i'm used to (and i guess, come to expect) from Jewel. Compare it to "Break Me" for example - that song just gets to me every time - its a very powerful song - This Way doesn't even come close to moving me the way Break Me does. I can guess what the general response to this will be - "This Way" is a beautiful song because of its simplicity. Yeah, i can agree with that - This Way is VERY pretty, its just not my favourite of the album. Does anyone else not like it so much? My faves? - - "Do You Want to Play". Its such a fun song, great to have a little dance to... i just love it. And that FABULOUS line "Are you only half alive, or have you always been this inarticulate" ;) - - "Serve the Ego". I think i love this one because its different. I've always been a fan of different - the concept. Its great to see Jewel put one of her more diverse songs on an album. And i looooove the Indian-like chant in the middle. Its amazing. - - "Till We Run Out of Road". Jewels vocals are wicked in this song - there's a lot of range, from the sweet high notes of "We're leaving, we're leaving again..." to that great grittiness of "hey man, this is a beautiful life.." and i really the love all the "woah-wo-oh-ah-yeah" bits [especially the one around 3 mins 40 ;)]. - -"Grey Matter". This song is an all time favourite of mine. Is was so so cool to see some old school Jewel on the album. I love the lyrics, i love the way Jewel sings it - this song can do no wrong in my eyes. I don't really have any preference over this version, to past ones - i love them all. Two songs that are just sooo much better live than they could ever be in studio versions are LMJLMA and The New Wild West. I'm still getting used to the begginning of LMJLMA - don't really like it, but it may grow on me. The rest of the song is admirable though - Jewel has almost managed to catch that live rock-concert feel of the song where it's best. And i really don't think the studio version of TNWW does the song justice. I don't think i like the music used on it - somehow they don't quite go with the vocals. In Jewel's thank yous she says "thanks to Daniel Lanois, Flea and Stephen Perkins for a recording of The New Wild West that didn't end up on the record..." I would love to hear that one - i might have liked it better. The first version of TNWW i heard was the live recording at Humphrey's by the Bay - and that one kicks ass. I especially loved the end where the music stopped for ".. mild mannered maids/ We'll fight with whsipers and blades/ So get ready/ A new day is daw-aw-aw-aw-awning/ So welcome to the new wild west/ ba dam bum, yeah..." that bit rocks... so powerful. The studio version just isn't the same at all. Lastly, "Break Me". I heard it solo acoustic first, and that's how i'll always love and prefer it. With only the guitar accompanying Jewel, her voice really shines through - you can hear all that heart-breaking emotion that makes the song so great. All those "atmospheric" sounds in the studio version strip some of that emotion for me. So even though the song is still very pretty, its no way near as good as it is solo acoustic. There.... that was all i had to say - I'll stop my analysis and go back to enjoying this FANTASTIC album now ;) Stace xxoo P.s - yeah i agree on the t-shirt thing. I hate big t-shirts, i'd never wear them out. But how great would a little styly Jewel tank top be? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Nov 2001 09:43:35 +0000 From: "now and zen girl" Subject: [EDA] this way, leno, dismissed... well i got this way today... and... well...
