I had class all day, so I just got home with it, I've just finished my first listen. I was looking at the lyrics before listening to SIBTW (one of my all-time favorite Jewel songs, Grey Matter is another, so I'm excited that they're the bonus tracks). But anyway, at Sessions, I noticed Jewel changed a line, the chamomile tea one. In the liner notes, the lyrics are the old ones (never served you) but in the actual song she sings "you both" For me, that additional word makes the song. It gives a great reason for the bitterness. I forgot what my point is, I know I had one. Oh yeah, it's funny how the printed lyrics aren't always the sung lyrics. Another thing I love about Jewel. If I remember correctly, the same thing happened with POY and WWSYS. The lyrics said "another hotdog some fries..." but the song was different. Well enough of my rambling. Gotta listen to This Way again. - -Kerri "But don't wander too far, my one constant star. Darkness exists, except where you are. My feet are filled with wandering they follow your own. Subject: [EDA] NJC: EXCELLENT!!! I just witnessed arguably the best 4 minutes on prime-time network television since I can't remember when. Anyone who caught tonight's episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer on UPN (that I normally never watch) most likely knows what I'm talking about. As I stated in an earlier post today, Michelle Branch was ON the show...actually on the show, playing on stage, with band...the works. What I didn't know or suspect, and was very surprised to see, was that they allowed her to play just about the whole song for "Goodbye to You", showing several segments of her on stage. I figured they'd show her once maybe, then cut away and leave just the music going in the background. I'm still in shock. Totally awesome of UPN to do that. I hope lots of you caught it...and I'm sure if you did then those of you who may have had somewhat of a negative opinion about her might have had a change of heart now. Anyway, what they showed on the show tonight is a really good example of how she really sounds, and how she really is. Not produced and not nearly as "pop" as some might think. Could have just as well been Jewel up on that stage in the show. Wouldn't have been all that much different really. Well I hope alot of you caught it and if not, then you really missed out! That just made my day. 4 minutes of prime-time network coverage...I'm still in awe over that. How much would that cost in commercials? LOL Never seen anything like that before in my life. The great Tara Maclean had a bit part in the movie Coyote Ugly, but they only showed her maybe all of 5-10 seconds, then cut away and left just the music going maybe another 30 seconds or so in the background. Which was about what I figured they'd do. But this completely shocked me. It was basically just like seeing her on something like the Tonight Show, only they cut away a couple times to show the characters and things...but they almost showed her (or maybe did) more than the actors and actresses! LOL Oh well...coolness, indeed. Derrick PS...sure hope that's her next single, but for some reason I doubt it'll be...unfortunately. I know there are several Michelle fans on the list...if any of you guys caught the show, let me know what you thought about it. :-) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Nov 2001 21:18:03 EST From: JewelGuy55@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Jewel Screen Saver??? I got the new album, grabbed a nice cold beer and relaxed and popped it on and just listened. I can't complain about any one of the songs, in all honesty. I think that the only way to phrase my "criticism", for lack of a better word, would be which songs I liked best and least. To start, even now, I can't get "I won't walk away" out of my head. I love that song. I think it's the melody the most that gets me, but the lyrics are inspiring in a romantic sense. I don't know, I just loved it and can't get it out of my head now. I listened to the album just once so far, but if I were to make a snap judgement I think that might be my favorite. I have the live version, but the album version is even better. Which leads me to other songs. I heard "Break Me" live and have a live recording of it so I'm not sure if it's because of the familiarity of it, but I like the live versions of "Break Me" in a more acoustic solo performance sound. I love the album version, don't get me wrong. I don't know about Cleveland just yet. I like the song, but it might be just a little too country for me and that was the only song I kind of drifted away while listening too. During the whole album my ear was glued to the speakers. I really like what Jewel did with "Love Me Just Leave Me Alone". It's certainly different than the versions I have and she did it justice. I'm not even saying that it's better, I believe it's just as good. I like the energetic scream with "why couldn't you do the same" like she does in concert on the album. I bet that there will be some of the avid Jewel fans that will be suprised to hear that unexpectedely. Which now leads me to a thought. It's a great album but the only thing I'm worried about is the new approach. Of course, I love it and I'm sure I'm not the only one on this list. We know Jewel's music enough to accept the change because to us it's not as much of a change. We've heard these songs or similar ones like it from her. "But" what about the subtle fan that only liked "Foolish Games" or "You Were Meant For Me". When this fan hears this new sound they might be less inclined. On the other hand they might be more inclined, who knows. She's going to have to rely on newer fans than the radio, channel surfing, pop fans. The best of luck to her. Once again, the album is amazing. I loved every song, some more than others, but hopefully it's just the same old successful Jewel. I really loved Grey Matter too. I know it's an old favorite but it was a great sound like a "Pieces of You" feel. I loved it even better that it was live. Old school Jewel to compliment a new sound. It was a perfect choice. I know that there are a lot of EDA's that had a wish list of songs they wanted, probably even more than what was selected. But regardless of what songs, I think this worked. I only bought one copy for now, but I plan to buy about 7 or 8 more for s tocking stuffers and thank you gifts. I'll find an excuse. I, personally, can't care less what the poor reviews would say. And the great reviews just echo what I, and I'm sure many other EDA's, already know. Jewel is here to stay and she's going to be a legend in many people's eyes, not just ours. I was going through a dificult time with my mother's illness and death, today, I'm going through the lost of compatriots of mine that died on the tragic plane crash yesterday in New York. I was born in the Dominican Republic and share dual nationality with the US. The Dom Rep is a beautiful island in the caribbean sea, " in the direct path of the sun" as a poet once described. The dominican people are the most pacifist, humurous and all around nice people you could ever encounter in this world, and being there last week just makes my broken heart more shattered because of this tragedy.
