Here it is: November 13, 2001 -- JEWEL "This Way" Atlantic After releasing one of the most successful albums of the '90s, writing two best-selling books and appearing in the critically acclaimed Ang Lee Civil War drama "Ride with the Devil," Jewel has attained incredible artistic freedom. Her new album "This Way" is misnamed. The 26-year-old singer should have called it "My Way" because it totally bucks trendy girl-pop stylings and offers an honest, introspective glimpse into the world as she sees it. This album hops around stylistically from folkie coffeehouse musings to Middle Eastern rhythms, and succeeds because it isn't afraid to fail. Take the song "Serve the Ego." Here Jewel looks at herself, the nature of fame, and how it erodes the soul. The song has the makings of a real whiner, but instead of seeing her as a poor little rich girl, it is compellingly set to an exotic beat. Later she slips 'n' slides through a Dylanesque blues boogie "Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone." This is a no-risk disc, one of the year's best. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Nov 2001 09:47:06 EST From: Cember76@aol.com Subject: [EDA] I really suck OK so my plan was to be in Burbank by like 6:30 or 6:45 am to get in line to get tics for the Jay Leno show so I could be there to see Jewel. So this morn I woke up at around 4:45am got ready got my daughter dressed around 5:30am (no big thing for her she's usually up by then) Got some food for her and a can of soup for her lunch cause she was gonna stay at her grandma's house. Was In the car by 6am. Couldn't find my ID. Searched and searched and searched. I cannot find my ID/Drivers license, or my ATM card. I don't know what I did with them I had them yesterday because I deposited my check. Now they are no where to be found. So we got out of the car much to my daughter's protests because she was excited to be going to see grandma. And now we are just home. And I am also extremely bummed. Dammit!!!!!! I even woke up early usually you can't get my eyes open before around 9:00am. Her dad usually wakes up with her and I sleep. This sucks so bad. I was really excited. And my poor little girl she wants to go to grandma's house. Which I will probably end up taking her later? But I will have to wait for tonight to watch Jewel on TV. Big bummer. Unless I find my ID and someone has an extra tic. but that would be to good to be true. These posts have me interested In a song originally called "Nikos" and since renamed "Brother", jewel relates the story of how her half-brother Nikos came to be and the aftermath of all that happened as a result. It's a very touching and moving song and the first time I heard it was live at JewelStock and it brought tears to my eyes. (it still does actually) Apparently after Jewel's parents divorced when she was just 8, Jewel and and Nikos hadn't met up again until that 1997 concert that I posted about earlier today. As for the title change, she did it after they met up, and also changed the names in the lyrics of others mentioned in the song, probably to protect the anonimity of Nikos, his mother and all. Subject: [EDA] SJC: hey everyone! :-) Since everyone (hopefully) knows everything going on with Jewel right now I won't repeat what we already all know. So I'll just mention that if anyone happens to be watching the UPN network tonight, and the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer...if you watch carefully you will see Michelle Branch performing one of her best songs ever (in my opinion), "Goodbye to You", actually ON the TV show. I'm not sure if this conflicts with the time slot of Jewel's Standing Still audio track in the Smallville show or not, but I think it'll be worth checking out, even if you're not a fan. It'll give everyone a chance to hear something other than "Everywhere", for those who don't have her CD yet. Another note...besides Jewel's new CD that comes out today, another notable release is that of Shakira. I haven't really kept up much with her career, but after seeing an MTV Unplugged show last week and hearing bits and pieces from other things, it may be worth picking this one up as well. There are 9 English, and 4 Spanish tracks on it. Guess that's about it for now. Big, sloppy tee-shirts. I always end up buying one if I go to a concert or something, but I never wear them. I think artists should start putting out more feminine shirts for their female fans. Just a thought. I just always feel ugly and sloppy when I have on some oversized tee-shirt, anyone else feel this way? Jewel has out some cool looking merch, but I just know I wouldn't wear any of it...well the shirts anyway, I might grab a cap. Anyway....yada yada ya. Are there any other women on the list that feel this way? Steve Poltz has awesome fitted t-shirts that said "One Left Shoe" on them. Blink 182 has sphaghetti strap t's.... DMB has fitted T's with cool symbols on them. No Doubt had an awesome short fitted v-neck t-shirt from their last album .... it had a giant red "X" on the front and on the back it said "x-girlfirend" it was real cute. Jimmy Eat World has these awesome blue babydoll shirts with angel wings on the back. And Mary Prankster has these rad black and red "baseball" style long sleeve "Rock 'N' Roll" t-shirts. Those are all i can think of at the moment that I liked a lot....that i own. But I know what youre saying Kristie.... i also have a big bulky Sarah McLachlan, Jewel, Stickboy, Lilith Fair, Third Eye Blind, Willie Nelson, TLC, and Reel Big Fish t-shirts. (Yes, i DID say willie nelson! HA HA) If artists, or merchandise people put more *thought* into different styles, shapes and colors of t-shirts/sphghetti straps/babydoll shirts instead of just plain baggy, loose t-shirts...then i bet they'd sell a lot more at least to the female crowd, and they'd get WORN a lot more. I've been on the list since June 1996 (I was 13, am now 19) and I had a gathering in New York in June 1997 called "Chelsstock." And I can tell you that I've witnessed the magic of this list firsthand many, many a time. There are some very amazing people on this list...and all the fighting and the Derricks and the Burritoheads and the Sean Hooks' of the world can never take that away from any of us. Well, I opened my copy of "This Way" with some trepidation. I suppose you could say I was one of the "purists" as far as Jewel fans go...I listened to my angelfood primarily and I will admit that I despised "Spirit" for its overproducedness and for what she did to 2 of my favorite songs, "Innocence Maintained" and "Absence of Fear." But I had heard Standing Still and absolutely loved it...I recorded the video off VH1 and watched it every day. But still I was scared when I opened the CD..kinda like "What if she lets me down again? I don't know if my Jewel loving heart can take it anymore!" LOL...I popped it in...listened to the whole thing all the way through once...and I am very proud to say that the last thing she did was disappoint me!!!!!!! The album does not have a bad song on it!!! ::does a happy dance:: I get the same feeling listening to it that I got the first time I heard POY...total bliss. Song by song: Standing Still: The perfect choice for the first single. I absolutely love this song. Jesus Loves You: I'm not quite sure what to think of this song yet...its bouncy, and I love the point she makes in the lyrics, but I'm still not sure what I think about it. I love the bridge, though. Everybody Needs Someone Sometime: Yeehaw, cowboy!! It makes me feel like line-dancing, LOL...but I love the hook and overall its a great song with a wonderful message. Break Me: I had never heard this song (I actually consciously stayed away from all the new songs, I wanted to be surprised.) but I love it...a simple love song with beautiful lyrics and gorgeous vocals. Do You Want to Play: My 3 month old son loves this song, and so do I! I love how she used the line from 'His Pleasure is My Pain'. Till We Run Out of Road: I really like this song...classic road song. Its obvious though, as someone said a couple months back, who wrote what. Ty's a good songwriter too though. Serve The Ego: This was one of my favorite tracks from the minute I heard it. Soooo different, soooo danceable, so incredible. Just like ENSS makes me wanna line dance, this one makes me wanna make like Shakira and bellydance!! ;-) This Way: I agree with the general consensus that this could be the next single. Beautiful. Just beautiful. Cleveland: I had a recording of this song from a show on the Tiny Lights tour, and I was pleased with how little the arrangement has changed. I've always loved this song, especially the chorus. I Wont Walk Away: The vocals at the beginning kind of threw me off, but its a beautiful song. Love me, Just Leave Me Alone: What the hell did she do to the beginning??? Probably the only time during my first listen that I flinched. Too slow. Although that scream does sort of make up for it...wowee!!!! The New Wild West: Love the statement she makes with the lyrics.."After all, what fun is power if you can't act like a rockstar?" Grey Matter: One of my favorite Jewel songs, but I think I'll stick with the JStock version...this one's too slow. SIBTW: Once again, sticking with the JS version, this one's too slow..and she amputated my favorite verse!! Its just not the same song without "sleeping like a baby, swaddled in bliss." Overall, I give the album a 9 out of 10. I'm so proud of my little Jewel!!!! Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to crawl back into my little lurker hole and listen to this amazing album over and over and over and over and over.... If any vets who I used to talk to feel like contacting me, I would absolutely love to talk to you!!! And all you new EDAs who I haven't gotten the pleasure of getting to know yet, feel free to drop me a line. I love meeting new Jewel fans!!! Love you all madly, Chelsea Hawk "I wanna tell you everything, I wanna make your toes curl. You'll be my only boy and I'll be your only girl." ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Nov 2001 14:13:22 EST From: Buster2530@aol.com Subject: [EDA] This Way! Did you all pick up your copy? EDA's, Wow, this last year has been crazy, hasn't it? Jewel has just recently started getting back into the mainstream, after taking close to 2 years off to write new material. Well....I think it's been worth the wait. I can't pick out ONE bad song on this entire album. I think the best song on the album though(it's hard to choose...but), i think it might be "This Way". It's such a sweet song, and I love the lyrics. What do you all think? What's your favorite song on the album? -John *angel who needs to post more on here* ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V6 #567 ***************************
