Hi all !!!! Just to let you know that i recieved my copy of 'This Way' today !!!!!!!! I live in the UK and pre-ordered it through Play247 on the internet. Anyhows it came thru the post this morning and i cant wait to listen to it !!!!!!!! This is what Jewel says about the songs, dont know if its been posted before. STANDING STILL I said it all in the song JESUS LOVES YOU I wrote this in my head on a winter walk along a frozen stream. This is one of my favourites EVERYBODY NEEDS SOMEBODY SOMETIME This is a song i try to take to heart because at some point its true for all of us BREAK ME Yeah a love song,I wrote it for Ty.There is also a line in here Rickie Lee Jones let me use becuase i thought it was perfect DO YOU WANT TO PLAY? I wrote this in Tokyo.Theres a hidden Anais Nin reference in here TIL WE RUN OUT OF ROAD I wrote this with Ty Murrayon a New Years Eve in Texas. Its about Ty being on the rodeo trail with his traveling partner, Cody Lambert. The reference to Lou is Louis Field, three time all round rodeo legend SERVE THE EGO I like saying 'Who says a woman cannot serve?' THIS WAY This was the hardest song to record.I hated doing it.But then again,i felt the same way when i recorded 'You were meant for me' so im not always the best judge CLEVELAND Yes you guessed it, i wrote this song in Cleveland. It wasnt about anyone in particular.I like the song:some were worried it was too country I WONT WALK AWAY I approached singing this one more like a jazz singer. At least, thats what i was thinking.Less notes, more tone LOVE ME JUST LEAVE ME ALONE I wrote this in a hotel in Bakersville back when i was 21 THE NEW WILD WEST I wrote this about how there is no land left to settle and that the 'last frontier' we have left to civilise is ourselves GREY MATTER And i meant every word SOMETIMES IT BE THAT WAY This is also a pretty old song.I used to sing it way back when i was in my van still, singing at the now fabled Innerchange Cafe. I dedicate this song to the lady who owned and ran the cafe, Nancy Porter. The false start at the beginning was me forgetting the lyrics. regards Glen South Coast Angel ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Nov 2001 19:53:12 -0500 From: "Pablo" Subject: [EDA] review one-liners!! good-bad... Obviously this guy HATES Jewel (he hates both Pieces of You and Spirit)... and frankly, I'll usually read and respect any review (good or bad), but anybody who criticizes Jewel's voice is fucking insane. Here's the review: This Way 1.5 stars (out of four) On her third album, Jewel rummages through vocal affectations the way one of her young fans might tear through a rack of outfits in a boutique. Crystalline, high and pure one moment, slurry and earthy the next. Now little-girl breathy, then raspy and semi-spoken. Abrupt falsettos and syllable-splitting, Springsteen clenches and Shania twangs strafe the album. Rather than versatility and range, this motley wardrobe represents the artistic cluelessness that has drawn critical barbs ever since the singer's debut album, "Pieces of You," made her the pin-up poet of the high school set. "This Way" marks small advances over that and 1998's "Vision," but mainly it's like being stuck at an endless coffeehouse open-mike night. Given her limitations, which also prominently include the thinness of her timbre and the wanness of her warble, Jewel is best off when she's over the top, as on the rock-riffing, finger-cymbal-ringing exotica hodgepodge "Serve the Ego," or the Janis Joplin-channeling "Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone." A little-engine-that-could spunk keeps the surface in motion, things moving, but it's inert underneath. bRICHARD CROMELIN ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Nov 2001 14:13:45 -0200 From: "FabioJJ" Subject: Re: [EDA] SCATHING this way review yeah, this guy said nothing that could justify the 1.5 stars. I've been looking for a good review to lift my spirits after reading that pan in the LA Times. Here's Billboard's review of This Way: There have always been numerous facets to Jewel's luster. Even her most commercial outings offer multiple textures, with deceptively simple melodies belying messages that extend beyond the hooks. This Way is the 27-year-old singer/songwriter's most ambitious effort yet, illustrating her desire to take on the world's societal and political ills and color them with a variety of stylistic hues: There's cowpoke country, folk, rich balladry, blues, even a whimsical turn at ballsy rock. The 14 tracks are highlighted by the gorgeous first single, "Standing Still," in which she sings about liking a guy bbut what's she's talking about is stepping out and embracing life. Other standouts are the coffeehouse anthem "Everybody Needs Somebody Sometime," the lilting "Break Me," and the rugged "Serve the Ego," a tale of subservient love. This Way is not as accessible to the masses as previous albums, but this jewel doesn't need to be so polished to glitter.bCT ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Nov 2001 00:31:13 -0500 From: shawn e williams Subject: Re: [EDA] Requesting on Phone..impossible?? i can't ever get through! A movie with some filming in Alaska beginning with her early years...it just seems to me that there really could be a great movie of her life growing up, all the things that she has been through, getting to school via horse and buggy, living with eskimoes, singing in the bars with her mom and dad, living on a farm, the divorce, bed in a closet, money being raised by people in her hometown to help her attend performing arts school, moving to California, moving into her van, the cafe where she started and also when the limo came to take her away. Lastly, something about how she affects so many people through her music, her message and what she believes in. Couldn't a really good movie director see that this could be a classic...in my opinion anyway. Please post if you think this could be a great movie with Jewel having the starring role of playing herself?!! Thank you, Sheila. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V6 #557 ***************************
